  • Dino’s Tinker Shed, S3 Ep18, I tune my DR650 compression damping.
In this episode, I will show you how I tune my DR650 compression damping on my rear shock. This is an easy thing to do and something every DR650 owner should know how to do and experiment with to dial in the ride quality. I recently had my rear shock serviced and Oliver over at “Performance Shock and Custom” encouraged me to play with the adjustment to find the best ride for my style of riding. The results were noticeable but not life altering, something I was expecting from what I had read online, however it was still a good experiment and well worth the trouble to get the most out of the shock.
My shock is still stock with no modifications other than an heavier coil spring to assist with my weight and luggage when I travel.
As always’ I have included time code chapters so you can skip around if you like.
    TIME CODE:
    00:00- Cold opening
    01:57- Intro
02:18- Review of the shock service
    04:03- Basic damping overview

Another very good video with important info Dino. My friend has a DR650 as I do. He has made adjustments to his shock absorbers. He said to me that he is 30kg heavier than me so he needed to make changes. In his younger days he competed in dirt road competition on motorcycles. Rider weight, (plus touring luggage), riding style and personal preference can make a difference to being comfortable when riding so you are correct in exploring damping including valves and oil viscosity.

Thank you for the information Mal. I think as I get more experienced with more difficult off road riding the benefits of improved suspension will sway me toward upgrades

I update my front suspension with Race Tech springs and valves made a big difference. I only up dated my rear spring and that made the biggest difference. I have orders the kit for the rear shock and will be doing that soon.

I am loving my Cogent .52 front springs and DDC cartridges and Mojave shock. Expensive, but a definite game changer for my DR650. I am 200 lbs plus riding gear and no more pogo stick on washboard gravel and no more huge front brake dive.
Best wishes to you Dino. Hope all is well and thanks for a great video !

It can make such a difference on how a machine rides. I sent out the shocks for my snowmobile, what a difference! You would think I would have learned from that, but... I purchased the big xr in 2013. It has adjustable suspension; I haven't touched it. I'm sure it will make a difference, but it rides "good enough" You have inspired me to turn the clickers this season. Thank you for another enjoyable video!

Great video. I really like the way you present your information and do your videos. It seems like friends talking shop on whatever subject instead of the pushy i know it all do it my way you often see on youtube. Great job Dino. Keep up the good work and best of luck on your new career! I know you can do it!

Another thorough Dino info session! I ride very similar to you, if slightly more aggressive off road, but still plenty of paved roads. I was hesitant to spend money on suspension, but after 12months of riding, and researching, decided to go for correct weighted springs front and rear, rear shock revalve, and platinum valves up front from Teknik. I am stoked with the improvements off-road, but just as impressed with how much better it is on pavement now. Definitely worth the investment.

I did Cogent springs & emulators up front, and a complete replacement Mojave shock in the rear. It has much better traction off-road now, particularly at speed. Cogent, and their Canadian distributor Bush Big Performance, are fantastic to deal with. If you plan on riding fast in rough country, it's amazing.
That being said, it's a harsher ride on the street. Handles great, but you do "feel" the bumps more. If I was only lightly cruising/sight seeing type riding on gravel roads and pavement, personally, I wouldn't bother with the upgrade.

Well explained Dino! Glad your happy with the shock. I fitted emulators and springs onto mine not too long ago not a massive difference for how i ride, definitely stiffened things up though.

Thanks for the feedback Dan. I think my style of riding is what's holding me back. I just am not sure my poki riding is going to benefit from the investment. But the ability to play around with the shocks is tempting for sure. Thanks again Dan.

Todd at Cogent is a knowledgeable guy who is easy to talk to, his products are top notch as well.
I would recommend before you spend a dime on any of it to talk to him first.
Write down your perceived problems (not other people’s, or internet opinion), what you want to correct and what your budget is.
Also have on hand what you have done, your bike weight, your riding weight and style plus your existing sag numbers - all this should speed up the process.
My experiences are the stock springs at my body weight were too light and it had a lot of brake dive - attributes of the light progressive spring Suzuki installed. The rear spring lacked the quick preload adjustability for varied loads and the stock spring was just too light for me.
I’m 240 in gear, the bike 410-420 depending on how much gas…the bike was never made to control that load.
Suspension can be expensive, and some upgrades may not suit how you use the bike.
DDC’s and a set of correct springs could be very beneficial though, they were for me.
    Great video as always,
    Cheers

I’ve just bought myself a 2nd hand DRZ-400 Dino and so now I’m just starting to embark upon my own ‘voyage of discovery’ to learn all about ‘their’ own intricacies, twirks, and improvement tweaks, but I’ll still be keeping an eye open, for your, own good DR-650 tuning ‘fun in, and out, of the Tinker Shed. 😉
And as for how, to set up the tuning, of one’s own bike’s suspension, I too, reckon it’s really worthwhile to take it along to your own local motorcycle suspension specialist and ask them, for their, own suggestions, about what they think would be the best way for you to go about it, for your own, predominant ‘style, of riding’.
After all, they, are, the ‘experts’ at it, and the way I look at it, is, why should I try and re-invent the wheel, myself, when just, spending a few moments asking, for an expert’s opinion, would most likely, certainly save me a whole, lot, of wasted time, and a whole lot of grief, and probably, a whole lot of my own wasted, money, as well.
    Keep on Tinkering, Dino. 😉👍

I found most of my accessories for my 2020 DR650 at Procycle in Oregon.

    • @DinosTinkerShed
      @DinosTinkerShed  ปีที่แล้ว +2

As pointed out below, Procycle is a great place for DR parts but import and shipping fees can become a bit high if your porting to Canada. I use Bushpig Performance or Fortnine for any high quality parts such as suspension or handle bars ect, both are Canadian so prices are in Canadian funds, I believe Bushpig is located in BC as well. For tires I find Royal Distributing often has good prices and shipping is free depending on how much you spend. For smaller stuff Amazon has some useful items and is worth a look but often brand name items are more expensive than the stores I listed above. I am also not an expert, these are just the spots I buy from, so others will help out I'm sure.
      Thanks for the question.

I will check all of them out . I can see needing a skid plate asap . Seems like something bad just waiting to happen with nothing under the new bikes . As well as all the other protective covers down there .I’m looking forward to lots of builds on my new bike as I go .
