I was a frugal entertainer with my kids before I knew it was cool. We have spent many days at the local small lake in our town. Feeding ducks, catfish, and a picnic lunch was some of my happiest times with my children. Now, they do the same thing with their children. It was nice to have off days during the week, since I worked every other weekend as a nurse. I miss those sweet times with them. 🤗💗😢

    My tips -
    - fill my car with petrol only once every 8 weeks. I walk everywhere. Healthy and keeps me fit
    - no cable, once I retire and stop working from home I will cancel my internet
    - prepay mobile phone $19 per month - no contract
    - cook everything from scratch. No processed foods.
All my appliances, phone, tv - all over 10-15 years old. Look after your stuff.
    - wear jumpers and use the sun to heat your home - I don’t have air con
    - be a minimalist
    - non drinker and I don’t like malls and shopping
    - save, save,save
I became a single mother at 28 yr olds, took on 2 jobs and foreign students as boarder to help pay the mortgage. Became mortgage free at 46.
Saved and at 56 could help my daughter into her own home.
Now saving again for a tiny home and retirement. Will rent my main home out as additional income.
Live below your means. Stop wanting more, want less.

I read somewhere that if you cannot afford health insurance including dental and vision you should not buy a home because buying home it's more expensive than people think the up keep and maintenance is expensive. This stopped me from buying a house and I'm glad I didn't after my husband lost his business during 9/11.

Our grandparents never had all these fancy detergents and cleaning products which, quite frankly, actually smell nasty and make me cough. They simply used soap and water and a marvelous thing called ”elbow grease“. And their homes, clothes and bodies were always spotlessly clean. So well done all of you reverting to the old fashioned standards.

I love A Home of Our Own!! I'm a single mom trying to thrive...I use vinegar and baking soda for cleaners , I go to the Dollar Tree for detergent and dish soap and yep, I water them down. I shop deals using grocery store apps and store clearance for shampoo etc so I get all the brands for $1 or less. My wood stove is dual purpose like yours..heating and cooking . I have ducks and chickens for eggs to both eat and sell. I live by the motto "reduce, reuse and repurpose"

I clean with vinegar and baking soda. It’s environmentally friendly and super cheap. It also does a great job. I mix half and half of vinegar and water in an old Windex bottle. It works better than any store bought cleaner. We have really hard water in Florida and I haven’t had a problem with buildup since I’ve been using the vinegar. The baking soda is like comet since it’s got a mild abrasive component. I use it to clean my toilet, bathtub and kitchen sink. I haven’t bought “regular” household cleaning supplies in a few years, and it has saved me so much money!

For animal stains....use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Costs 88 cents for a bottle at Walmart. It does NOT take color out of carpet or fabric, but eliminates stains and shadow stains from animal accidents. Also odors. I have two cats....vomit happens. The dye in the food cause shadows even after you clean it. I pick up the solids, use hot dish soap and water to clean the mess, then soak with hydrogen peroxide. Stain GONE. If you're hesitant, try it on a hidden spot on your carpet first.
Also works on clothing stain....all those OxiClean type products use peroxide...and charge a fortune. Buy a few 88 cent bottles of 3% peroxide and have it on hand!!!

Lots of good advice from you and your commenters. I have an extensive wardrobe (30 tops, 15 pants, 12 pairs shoes, 10 lightweight jackets, etc) all for $309 I added it up. Church thrift stores are the way to go - all clothes $1 -$3, shoes usually $4 same for purses. I've even bought Victoria Secret and Christian Dior bras with the tags still on for $2. My local church thrift sets aside jigsaw puzzles and size 5 or 6 shoes for me. Multi-use items genius, Roku can't live without it, library my best friend, adding water to liquids to extend brilliant. Free entertainment - local parks, walking the neighborhood, check the newspaper for free events but be aware of parking fees. Look at your area as if you were a tourist - what would you recommend, where would you go? Have neighbors in their 30s-40s? Ask them for recommendations for TH-cam shows, Roku channels - I'm in my 70s and am amazed at what they have gotten me hooked on - Taskmaster for one. Also for houseplants, landscape plants, veggies and flowers ask neighbors for cuttings as long as you are willing to wait for growth and Dollar Tree has veggie and flower seeds at 4/$1 - small packets but good seeds.

I watched a video of you today foraging. I do the same thing but I do it with edibles and medicinal plants! It allowed me to get off many prescription drugs. I went from 12 to 2 medications as needed. I also love thrift store shopping! I have learned that if you just ask for a discount at a thrift store they usually give it to you.

If it's not on my computer, I don't watch it. There's SO much to watch online, it's ridiculous. I do have Netflix and Amazon Prime, so I'm never at a loss for entertainment. When I shop, I always have a shopping list and have trained myself not to even LOOK at anything that is not on my list. Cleaning supplies - the Dollar tree. Same for wrapping paper, gift bags and greeting cards - the Dollar Tree has it all. My home has electric heat so I only have the heat on in one room, the living room, where I spend most of my time. I never turn the heat on in any other room, I hate sleeping in a warm room, anyway.

Lately though I heard about putting bleach mixed with water in a spray bottle for washing walls. I got a spray bottle and added about a cup of water and 2 cups of bleach ( you could use more water and less bleach) and I had some mold in my bathtub-shower and I sprayed it and the mold just started running off and then I took a stiff brush and sprayed and scrubbed the rest of the mold and mildew and the whole thing. When I got through my bathtub was so clean and sparkly. A lot of times if I run out of detergent, I’ll take some dishwashing liquid or some shampoo and wash with that. I love your tips. ❤️

So I have been making clothing with nice materials. All material uncut is new. It may have sit on the shelf since 1960 BUT is usually uncut haha. I may start watering things down. But my husband is 75 yo and I am 48 yo. We cant take it with us and most of our adult kids are better off than us. Except one. With that said, like I said we now feel after years of thrifty living , we cant take it with us. This is just us I am speaking for. Here is a prime example, my husbands parents were born in 1900 & 1905 respectively. Lived thru the great depression and midwest dust bowl. Went out in the late 90s at ripe old ages and died with nearly a million cash and several farms. The poor old woman NEVER knew a cold ac in her home, microwave, telephone, etc. And she lived through all these great inventions! Didnt have an indoor toilet until the 1970s. She wasnt able to see a payday in 90 years! Never shopped for anything but what she had to buy. We decided to quit living that way. I am still a bit thrifty but not to the extent I was after my husband told me , in tears, his mother lived on the ok/texas border without ever having a cold ac. They laid on the floor with the door open on hot days. With their dogs. Literally. I do NOT exaggerate. I wont make my son cry when he remembers me. I just wont.

Yeah....I remember one apartment that was so hot....(no cross ventilation or AC) in the 1990's and up to 2005.....that was so hot.....I opened the door around 3 AM to let in cold air. In addition, in order to sleep, I would wet a towel with cold water....and put that across my body in order to sleep. Probably saved my life!

@@sundancer7381 I grew up middle-class but got married too young. I remember wetting a sheet and putting it on ready to get cool then it would get hot and sticky so we had to take it off. One year it was so hot we drove around all night with the air conditioning on in our car. A box fan in front of an open window with a screen helped at times..... or suffering so bad you keep the windows open even though you don't have screen. So what do you want bugs landing on you in the middle of the night or be in the sweatbox? Being poor rots. I remember putting a bathing suit on in the summer getting in the shower and then walking around the house in a wet bathing suit. But we survived.

Awww Rocky...you're a sweetie. Back in the 80's when I was married, we brought in good money, and went out socially regularly, I used some of the higher priced cosmetics/face care products. For the last 5 years I've been moving toward minimalism including DIY facial care and cleaning products. My favorites: 1. Castile soap. Dr. Bronner's is a common brand that is even sold now at our regional supermarket. I couldn't find it at Walmart so purchased Dr. Jacobs brand that is the same. I chose almond and it smells lovely. It is advertised for a body wash, facial wash, and shaving lather. It is listed as an alternative to shampoo & conditioner. Household uses - general cleaner, laundry detergent & dish soap. I'm using it as my facial cleanser and it has done wonders for my acne-prone skin. Like PP said, it only needs a TINY bit mixed with water. Also used it as my hand cleanser mixed with water.
I haven't yet used it for laundry detergent or dish soap, but have added it to my heavier duty cleaning products - just a drop or two. 2. Favorite cleaners for kitchen & bathroom cleaning are white vinegar (I buy it in jugs) & baking soda (inexpensive). I use those two a LOT!! 3. Hydrogen peroxide - a lot of info on uses for this online - my current use is cleaning old stains on the carpet - mainly where my elderly cat threw up. This stuff does wonders!! I've heard a tiny bit of it can be used as a mouth wash, but be sure to spit it out and only use 3% solution.
I still have a container of Clorax that I used for the first time in a long time yesterday for a very stubborn stain. Still using liquid detergent when I find it on sale but will now be using a LOT less per load. I buy bleach from the Dollar Tree & use it for my whites in laundry and to clean the inside of my washing machine. Always looking for new ideas. ;)

Pluto TV (Which has a lot) and of course TH-cam so I can watch Prepper Princess. $140 saved per month is a lot in my world, that's enough to cover insurance on vehicles for 2 drivers!

@lucy lu LOL. I recently battled with "smart" electronics with a DELL power adapter for a laptop. The adapter uses a unique signal to identify the fact you are using a DELL power adapter. If you don't use a DELL adapter, the laptop won't charge the battery and the computer runs very slow. Knockoff adapters don't work. Problem is this additional signal wire DELL incorporated tends to break somewhere, either in the adapter or inside the laptop making DELL owners crazy. Sometimes being "smart" can result in something being a really "dumb" idea . DELL created a lot of unhappy laptop owners.

My husband is a fanatic about clean windows. He used to swear by a product called Jasco but when we couldn't find it anymore, I found this formula for a window cleaner that he loves and has been using for years. It's cheap and you can get everything you need at Walmart for a couple dollars and it makes a gallon. The recipe is: 1/2 cup ammonia, 2 cups rubbing alcohol, 1 tsp. any dishwashing soap (I get it all at the dollar store). Put the ammonia, rubbing alcohol and dishwashing soap in a clean gallon jug. I use a milk jug that I've washed out. Fill the jug with water. Shake to mix. We keep some of this mixture in a spray bottle and refill from the gallon jug as needed. It takes minutes to mix up and costs less than $2.00 for a gallon of it because you get several batches out of a bottle of ammonia and rubbing alcohol. Try it. You'll be surprised how well it works! My husband likes it better than Windex.

Aussie here. Recently house sat for a mate. Came away with these money saving observations.
Turn the temperature of you water heater down. Having water so hot from the tap it burns is just throwing money down the drain.
Get low flow shower heads. I have a 9 litre a minute head and I live in a low pressure neighbourhood and the shower pressure is fine. Saved a third on my water bill.
If its yellow, let it mellow. Now my water bill is half the average of other users, according to the water company that sends the bills. In fact my water usage is so low I often don’t get a bill. Just a notice to say how much I’ve not used.
Do a little bit of cleaning often. Having a shower? Clean the toilet bowl first and then have a shower. Or clean a little bit of the shower prior to turning on the water. Just a small patch every day and you never have to worry about visitors looking at a dirty shower.
Buy once, cry once. Buy the stuff of the best quality that you can afford. As a bachelor for the entire century, I find washing soda is brilliant in the clothes wash. It more than halves the amount of washing powder I use. I find a cleaning product called Shower Power just works. Mold Power also just works.
For the kitchen, I splurge a little. I use a 50/50 mix of Detol and Handy Andy. Makes the place safe and clean and smell brilliant. Also good on stains on wooden floors.
All my cleaning products go into a hand spray container. Officeworks sells a half-litre one for $3 and they are great. I then dilute 50% and spray as a gentle mist.
The best device I have found for quick, easy cleaning is a steam mop. I use it in the kitchen, toilet and bathroom floors and nothing has beaten the steam mop yet. Also, the hand held one is brilliant on windows, with no need for cleaning products. Got a good quality brand [Hoover] ten years ago and I’ve had to purchase replacement heads but the mop is still going strong. I’m of the opinion that anything that the steam mop kills and cleans has to change whatever it is into being something completely different for the mop to not work. So yeah, brilliant.
    Love the channel.
    Cheers,
    -Mac

I never wash my shower really.... I make homemade 'shower spray' and I spray my shower down after every time I'm in there. Its a 1/2 cup of vinegar, in a large spray bottle, one drop of dawn dish soap (or probably the Simple Green) and fill the bottle to the top with water. Leave it on the floor of the shower, and I spray it down before I get out and dry off... saves me LOTS of time and LOTS of money!

It works almost as well as simple green on both soap scum in the shower and cutting grease on the stove. For toilets or hard goop in the kitchen, I add some baking soda to the area before I add the mix, let sit for a bit. It’s truly magic and the cheapest thing I’ve come across

She kept it in a small tin and used to fry, season other during the week. While it’s not the healthiest option. You can catch super groovy deals on bacon. I always buy at lease 1 pack of bacon a month as my mother did. Yes I run out and have some cooking oil on hand but we use our air frier, which takes small amounts oil and power , but don’t ditch that pork renderings (great flavor in other dishes) Just one small saver I use for me and my husband.

I a!so purchased a very good how to book from a you tube lady, Dehydrate2store. I mostly store in various size mason jars including oxyven absorbers and when necessary moisture absorbers. I love how it dehydrates soup veggies especially greens like chard, spinach, napa, cabbage, kale. The nutrient content stays high if stored properly. I take advantage of the local farmer market and put up enough to last until the next growing year. I also become a major pickle making machine of both sweet and garlic dills (similar to Clauson) which cost less than 25% of the commercial pickles. They last for a year if you use fresh farmer market ingredients and store right away. I have a 22nd small fridge that becomes the pickle fridge. I love storing this food purchased at peak freshness which is a problem with store bought produce in WI in the winter. My family gets much better nutrition at the best prices.

I use Persil or Purex powdered soap - it lasts me like six months or more, since there are just two of us in the house. Dollar Tree carries the Awesome brand cleaner and most of the time, I just use vinegar and/or baking soda - they work great and so cheap! Definitely ways to live cheap.

Antenna TV is free here in most areas. The antenna isn't free though. I have 2 Roku's on 2 different TV's in my house and it is all I need. I love it! I was a single mother and learned all kinds of frugal tricks to stretch my dollar. It is a smart way to make more money and save lots for the future. My kids wore home made clothes and I was told many times I was lying and they were purchased so the kids weren't embarrassed to wear them. I love your ideas and for this video is the best!

I have not purchased a Windex product in over 20 years!! I make my own. Recipe from a commercial window cleaner. Any spray bottle: few drops of any dish liquid, about 1 inch in bottle of vinegar, same for ammonia then fill rest of bottle with water. :) streak free too

Watch "The antenna man" on TH-cam. He will explain everything you ever need to know about antennas and over the air TV and how antennas works. One problem is don't be cheap with your antenna. Get a good outside antenna and maybe a rotor. If you can't go outdoors with your antenna try a good indoor antenna. If that doesn't work wait until ATSC 3.0 comes out in about 5 yrs. It will revolutionize over the air TV.

I live in upstate South Carolina. My landlord who passed away two days after Christmas. Was very proud of the almost 100 channels he got on his antenna. If I find a permanent place to stay, I have a similar antenna. Or I might just start sampling channels as I travel.

The laundry detergent you mentioned that you make, can be done as a powder as well, makes storage less of a hassle, less spillage issues. Our batch lasts us about 9 months, costs about 9-11 bucks... nice! We make our own window cleaner, candles, and soap. Not the foo-foo cutie types of soap, but real soap you can use that works great!! Going to work on making my own lye for soap, also. I must admit, I do like a dishwasher, and I recently got a recipe for dish detergent, that’s quite inexpensive!!! I’ll let you know how it works.

2 cups borax and a packet of lemonade unsweetened Kool-aid (for the citric acid and the lemon scent), mix dry then use a tablespoon or two in the dishwasher, for the rinse cycle put vinegar in the rinse dispenser.

Liber Lady this looks quite doable, works well?

    • @LiberLady
      @LiberLady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ralphjesseman6562 yes, keep in mind, rinsing dishes is essential, the commercial dishwasher compounds include enzymes so its important no food particles are left in the washer.

Lye is so cheap that I think it's not worth trying to get the right amount by making it although it definitely is a great skill to have for SHTF...I'm with you on the candles too!

@@LiberLady I've never thought of the lemonade mix. Do you ever have any issues with stains or anything from it? A pretty interesting idea.

I clean with steam and microfiber cloths. I like being able to do water-only cleaning and having a steamer, I can use it instead of washing clothing sometimes. Not having to buy cleaning products and not having to store them is a good thing. I bought cloths that are infused with silver because the silver helps kill the bacteria but steaming them also works or using UVC light works. I have a baby bottle sterilizer that sterilizes with UVC and that can be used to kill germs on your toothbrush or cell phone or fruit or a glass of water if you are worried about your water.

Love Comet, its my go to for so many things; has just enough grit, that doesn't scratch that removes so many things from grease or oil stains on walls, to toilet and shower cleaning.
