Honestly, this pair could have worked post Sasuke's attempt on Sakura's life and Naruto putting himself through hell to save her. I don't think anyone would have held it against Sakura if she gave up on Sasuke after he LITERALLY tried to kill her. If they had used that as a realisation on Sakura's part, that Sasuke was beyond redemption and nothing she could do would heal him + realising that Naruto truly cared for her and risked himself over and over, they could have eased in a blossoming love story for Sakura and Naruto where she slowly starts returning his affections. Especially since, at this point there wasn't much Hina x Naru content. Yeah she risked her life and confessed to him but their storyline was dead up until the 4th Ninja War. I guess it would have gone against their characters cuz at this point everyone knows Hinata is in love with Naruto. Still the writer left this confusing "what if" scenario open because Sakura and Naruto have way more chemistry than Naruto and Hinata.
Actually... this was a good ending for both, and a more realistic way for her... she never changes her feelings... that s why kishimoto wrote her wrong...
