squatting has so many benefits. I squat down as often as I can. it decompresses my spine, flexes the knee joints, stretches out the muscles in the legs, and loosens the hips. if you're an athlete, these are particularly important. in fact, I've gone a step further: I sleep on a futon on the floor so that I have to get up in that way every day and eat on a small table inches above the ground. I feel the best I have ever felt in my entire life.
Yes, I'm from NE and I can squat 300+ times at a go and sit in that position effortlessly for a long time. But, it's not because I belong to the NE region, it's because I practised squatting and have been squatting for years now. The truth is learning to forward bend using the hip hinge and hamstrings is much more important than even squatting. Nobody will tell you this. Anybody can do anything in this world just that it requires time, patience and consistency. Conscious repetition of a movement till you can do it unconsciously and effortlessly is the key.
I was observing a child playing in the garden and i saw whenever it got tired it sat down to relax or pick up or put down things. Squatting is a natural way of relaxing for our body.
Excellent talk Pritam. Recovering from L3/L4/S1 fixation, I find that the more I walk, the better I feel - the longer I sit, the worse I feel. Standing using my computer feels very comfortable now.
It's not the first time I've heard something like this about squatting. However, for Westerners it seems like an impossible task; I can squat but I have to put a hand on the wall to keep the balance because I cannot keep my feet flat on the ground. Perhaps we should reintroduce the habit of sitting on the floor since a young age and eliminate chairs from kindergarten, schools and alike places.
On the TED talk Why Sitting Down Destroys You, he refers to this. And if you read the book Gut by Dr. Guilia Enders, she also talks about the importance of squatting. In her book it also says you can use a stool at the toilet to elevate your feet = complete evacuation.
No, no, no. Your hips are tight. First place a flat weight under your heels, will make it easier, and gradually start lowering yourself - as if wanting to sit on a chair - while holding onto the door frame. Eventually you’ll loosen up. And will be able to get into that final position. Takes two months. Only. But remember, we worked our way into this contracted position for 40-50-60 years. If otherwise no damage already, like advanced arthritis etc. you’ll gain back your lost flexibility. Which is everything.
This is one of the amazing and informative talk so effortlessly delivered by pritam.... I was avoiding to watch it because of less views.... But the information and knowledge he shared needs to shared to the masses... Salute and Big Thanks to you pritam!
I could barely walk the other day (lifting my toes was painful up front of leg), I realised afterwards, it was because I had started practising the squat a few days before. Surprising what different elements of the body it uses to do this simple movement. Defo will be continuing, ill start by just going down to squat a few times a day, then practise staying there for 30-60 seconds and build it up. Very good Ted talk
Excellent talk. I am addicted to sitting. I never thought of it this way even though I knew sitting was not healthy. I can feel I am getting weaker from sitting so much. What has been helping me is Asana. And luckily in my culture we sit squatting.
The effects of sitting can be dissolved as long as for every hour you are sitting, you just get up and walk around for a bit or do light exercise. Sitting becomes dangerous if you just sit for hours on end.
Oh how I wish I'd been taught this is school, when my mind was young and impressionable. Of all things kids are taught that may not help in life, this would. Particularly in this day and age.
Good points. Tom Myers talks about this in his Google talk. Anyone else interested in clinical and technical study of these topics might find that talk useful.
I started practicing my Asian squat daily about a month ago. It's really changed my lower back and hip pain levels. I also noticed how many other muscles it engages, in particular, those by my tibia and ankle bones.
Excellent presentation and I wish this was shown in schools and universities everywhere! Too many people are sitting down for too long and having back and poop problems. ;-)
I just tried to squat and was surprised, that I can still do a deep squat without holding on to something. I think all the exercise, and walking, I have been doing lately is paying off at 66 years old. No wonder my aches and pains are all gone.
People have actually gotten upset with me for not taking a chair. My squatting somehow offends them. Too bad, I must say. Following my chiropractic doctor’s orders. 😁

Thank you for this brilliant message. I do resting squat and today , now, is the first day I am doing the 30 in 30 challenge : 30 minutes a day squatting for 30 days. The 30 minutes don't have to be together. I accidentally discovered the squat position after scooping 11 litterboxes a day raising kittens.
The first day of 6th grade was the year that I pronounced to the class, "I can't believe we're expected to sit here all day, for another year!!" I hated school for that very reason.
I stood up the second he asked. Also, I was absolutely convinced for 48 years that primal squat was fisically impossible for some of us due to a genetic constraint. Found out to be a misconception on my part.
Praise this man. Sitting on a chair-like davice everywhere, daily for hours makes is a disease. It makes us cripple in older ages. It's not old age, what brings us pain in the back an knee, its the wrong posture, every day for decades leads to degeneraded muscles and ankles. Throw away your chars (like I did) and squat (it's the age old way of us sapiens to rest).
I started squatting as soon as I wake up, as excercise warm up and cool down, before I go to sleep, and anytime I've been sitting for like an hour or something. At first it sucked but it actually became more comfortable than sitting. And I became more flexible and my knees became stronger. Funny it's so simple
Lived in Japan, actually, come to think of it, when I visited lots of Balkan countries, I think Turkey, too, have “squat” toilettes. The sitting toilette, in nice hotels for instance, was called the western style. Just recently, some of my doctors, actually addressed this, suggesting placing a small stool under the feet while sitting on toilette, mimicking this “squatting” pooping. Interesting. BTW. I believe this is the natural position delivering babies, too. Very interesting.
That style of sitting is called 'the asian squat'. These 'squat toilets' are from india. And colonization resulted them in becoming globalized. I always thought its famous in Asia. But u r from Japan and don't know bout it..? I wonder why. How are the traditional toilets in Japan. I believe that these 'sitting toilets' would have been introduced by America in Japan.
Thank God Dubai airport has not forgotten to have these squat toilets unlike other major international airports - thoughtful thinking by them as it also the most hygienic where it’s for public use as it’s the most hygienic as there is no toilet seat disinfection issue !
I've read that laying down doesn't actually do the spine too many favors either. I myself experience just as much lower back pain from laying for long periods of time as much as I do from sitting. Just goes to show, mom knew what she was talking about when she encouraged us to be active.
Ask for change. Share this video or something like it with your teacher and principal. Start a petition. Sitting on an exercise ball is a good compromise and is affordable to most students. Think of a way to raise funds for those students who can't afford one. Seems like a good opportunity for positive change not only for students but perhaps their teachers and parents.
I’ve been thinking about this - if you can sit in a squat position, even into old age, it must be better, because you’ll be stronger in the leg muscles and more flexible too.
For the past 7 years I stand all day at a standing desk, and it's great. You don't need to spend a lot on one that adjusts up and down... Mine is fixed in the up position (tall legs) and if I ever need to sit at the desk I can pull up a stool. My desk was from Ikea and super inexpensive. Even better than a stool is to get rid of the stool. With a stool nearby and in view it's tempting to use it. So when mine broke 5 years ago I never bought a new one. Now standing all work day is actually much easier without that temptation.
I endorse squatting one hundred percent. There is a TedTalk on proper sitting position which is much better than how one normally sits. Stand often, squat often and walk often.
I'm pretty sure that people are aware that sitting isn't inherently good for you. Most realize it's unhealthy to sit in certain positions. The reason people don't keep good posture is because we're lazy as shit.
MasterofPlay7 That's true as well, though things can usually be done to accomodate the people in those situations. If not, they should consider a different company if at all possible. I work in IT and sit on my ass all day, but my work is willing to do just about anything to make us comfortable. Not everyone can have that, but most people don't even give it a try in the first place.
yea yea, but is not going make a big difference, the nature of job require you to do so, you often sit for long hours thinking the solution don't realize how long have passed
I agree with S, I think its more a lack of awareness and we have made standing and moving harder than sitting, we need to built it into our system, and make it a habit.
I make sure to give myself a smoke break every 30 minutes or so after learning the dangers of prolonged siting, feels good to stretch the legs and back often
Yes, ladies. We can really tell the difference when your squatting isn't up to snuff. If you don't want to be left in the dust by the competition... squat, squat and then squat some more.
Viêtnamese are the world champion to squatting, my parents in law are in great health and never complain about back pain as my parents in France. Because in Viêt Nam we use to cook, eat, watch tv, work or whatever else we do in squat position.
If you think sitting isn't addictive, try getting rid of all of your chairs. Just stand, squat, or sit on the floor instead. I had already shifted to standing while working before I got rid of my chairs. At first it was really difficult, but I adjusted within about three or four days to spending so much more time standing. It began to feel natural, normal. So I thought when I got rid of my chairs that it would be a similar adjustment. I was wrong. It took weeks. It was very uncomfortable, painful really, and it felt very much like giving up an addiction. I think my back muscles were atrophied, even though I work out. I was worried that my body was never going to be able to adjust to supporting itself, the way it's designed to do. Try it, you'll see what I mean. But it was worth it. I'm pretty sure that sitting in chairs was slowly killing me. The body is designed to support itself but furniture makes it very lazy, because the furniture does the work that the body is supposed to be doing for itself. Also, when you spend most of your time sitting or laying down, your bones are not getting enough of the signals they need to stay strong.
A healthy habit is also to regularly place your computer on a high table (adjustable height legs) and do some work while standing. Height of the table can be just above your hips for a comfortable 90-100 degrees angle for the elbows. You will feel more productive also if having two desks. One low and one high.
I hold the Asian squat for five minutes a day. It definitely seems to be healthy for the back, calves, hips, etc. Supposedly most Americans can't do it.
How could he keep straight face talking it. Try this at dinner party. A true test of friendship. Good delivery while standing. Tks. Any thing to declare. A word of warning. Do not swat on sitting toilet. The rim will break. It is a rocky horror show.
I've lost a lot of friends to sitting. One of them was keeping a couch in his garage that none of us knew about. heartbreaking

One low and one high.
great! great! underestimated very important topic. perfect!
I hold the Asian squat for five minutes a day. It definitely seems to be healthy for the back, calves, hips, etc. Supposedly most Americans can't do it.
Love this!!!
Got a standing ovation at the end
Laying down for years is a problem but little solutions
sitting at the computer hurts my neck more than my back.
*WATCHING THIS STOOD UP* thought I was a bit of a freak for not actually LIKING sitting down very much...
I just started to introduce the squat into my daily routine!! Hopefully in a couple of months I’ll have it down.
I wish I could have heard him!
Squatting behavior is bad for the furniture business - those damn kids.
How could he keep straight face talking it.
Try this at dinner party. A true test of friendship.
Good delivery while standing. Tks. Any thing to declare.
A word of warning. Do not swat on sitting toilet. The rim will break. It is a rocky horror show.
