  • The effect sitting has on our bodies: how prolonged sitting can be seen as the, "smoking generation."
We thank our Buffalo Film Crew Marshall Ulger, Katie Kostelny, Brittany Sedor, and Shawn Combs!
Pritam is in his second year of PhD at Rochester Institute of Technology, working at the recently established AMPrint Center. At the center, he works on developing processes for 3D printing carbon fibers. After getting his bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from his hometown of Kolkata, India, Pritam came to Rochester in 2012 for a master's degree in Industrial Engineering, and later continuing on to his PhD. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of Membership at Tiger Tales Toastmasters, a public speaking organization on campus. He thoroughly enjoys public speaking and believes learning that skill has been a turning point in his life. squatting has so many benefits. I squat down as often as I can. it decompresses my spine, flexes the knee joints, stretches out the muscles in the legs, and loosens the hips. if you're an athlete, these are particularly important. in fact, I've gone a step further: I sleep on a futon on the floor so that I have to get up in that way every day and eat on a small table inches above the ground. I feel the best I have ever felt in my entire life.

Yes, I'm from NE and I can squat 300+ times at a go and sit in that position effortlessly for a long time. But, it's not because I belong to the NE region, it's because I practised squatting and have been squatting for years now.
The truth is learning to forward bend using the hip hinge and hamstrings is much more important than even squatting. Nobody will tell you this.
Anybody can do anything in this world just that it requires time, patience and consistency.
Conscious repetition of a movement till you can do it unconsciously and effortlessly is the key.

It's not the first time I've heard something like this about squatting. However, for Westerners it seems like an impossible task; I can squat but I have to put a hand on the wall to keep the balance because I cannot keep my feet flat on the ground. Perhaps we should reintroduce the habit of sitting on the floor since a young age and eliminate chairs from kindergarten, schools and alike places.

No, no, no. Your hips are tight. First place a flat weight under your heels, will make it easier, and gradually start lowering yourself - as if wanting to sit on a chair - while holding onto the door frame. Eventually you’ll loosen up. And will be able to get into that final position. Takes two months. Only. But remember, we worked our way into this contracted position for 40-50-60 years. If otherwise no damage already, like advanced arthritis etc. you’ll gain back your lost flexibility. Which is everything.

I could barely walk the other day (lifting my toes was painful up front of leg), I realised afterwards, it was because I had started practising the squat a few days before. Surprising what different elements of the body it uses to do this simple movement. Defo will be continuing, ill start by just going down to squat a few times a day, then practise staying there for 30-60 seconds and build it up.

Lived in Japan, actually, come to think of it, when I visited lots of Balkan countries, I think Turkey, too, have “squat” toilettes. The sitting toilette, in nice hotels for instance, was called the western style. Just recently, some of my doctors, actually addressed this, suggesting placing a small stool under the feet while sitting on toilette, mimicking this “squatting” pooping. Interesting. BTW. I believe this is the natural position delivering babies, too. Very interesting.

That style of sitting is called 'the asian squat'.
These 'squat toilets' are from india. And colonization resulted them in becoming globalized.
I always thought its famous in Asia. But u r from Japan and don't know bout it..? I wonder why.

I stood up the second he asked. Also, I was absolutely convinced for 48 years that primal squat was fisically impossible for some of us due to a genetic constraint. Found out to be a misconception on my part.

The first day of 6th grade was the year that I pronounced to the class, "I can't believe we're expected to sit here all day, for another year!!"
I hated school for that very reason.

I’ve been thinking about this - if you can sit in a squat position, even into old age, it must be better, because you’ll be stronger in the leg muscles and more flexible too.

A healthy habit is also to regularly place your computer on a high table (adjustable height legs) and do some work while standing. Height of the table can be just above your hips for a comfortable 90-100 degrees angle for the elbows. You will feel more productive also if having two desks. One low and one high.

For the past 7 years I stand all day at a standing desk, and it's great. You don't need to spend a lot on one that adjusts up and down... Mine is fixed in the up position (tall legs) and if I ever need to sit at the desk I can pull up a stool. My desk was from Ikea and super inexpensive.
Even better than a stool is to get rid of the stool. With a stool nearby and in view it's tempting to use it. So when mine broke 5 years ago I never bought a new one. Now standing all work day is actually much easier without that temptation.

Praise this man. Sitting on a chair-like davice everywhere, daily for hours makes is a disease. It makes us cripple in older ages. It's not old age, what brings us pain in the back an knee, its the wrong posture, every day for decades leads to degeneraded muscles and ankles. Throw away your chars (like I did) and squat (it's the age old way of us sapiens to rest).

I've read that laying down doesn't actually do the spine too many favors either.
I myself experience just as much lower back pain from laying for long periods of time as much as I do from sitting.
Just goes to show, mom knew what she was talking about when she encouraged us to be active.

Ask for change. Share this video or something like it with your teacher and principal. Start a petition. Sitting on an exercise ball is a good compromise and is affordable to most students. Think of a way to raise funds for those students who can't afford one. Seems like a good opportunity for positive change not only for students but perhaps their teachers and parents.

Yes, ladies. We can really tell the difference when your squatting isn't up to snuff. If you don't want to be left in the dust by the competition... squat, squat and then squat some more.

So how does sitting down without using the backrest stack up? In bygone centuries, people used stool without backs or chairs with wooden backs that you could not slouch in. Is that as good as standing (for your back)?
