My father told me stories about the Big E. My father watched the classic game on TV between Elvin Hayes' Houston Cougars vs Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's (he may have been referred to his birth name at that time) led UCLA Bruins at the Houston Astrodome during the late 1960's. My father told me it was the most watched basketball game ever at that time.
Many stories reported that Elvin Hayes was constantly jealous of Kareem's career. Elvin and Wes Unseld did not have a positive relationship as teammates. Dr. J even once mentioned in an interview that the Big E held a personal grudge against him even long after retirement after being posterized by him in a game. And there was once a story reported that Elvin had Thanksgiving dinner alone without his family. From the positive things I admired about the Big E was that he finally won that coveted championship and was one of the most durable NBA players to ever play. I think he played a minimum of 80 games a year throughout his 15-year career. Now that's an amazing stat! Despite only reading stories and watching highlights of the Big E, Elvin will always be one of my all-time favorite NBA legends.

His name shouldn't come up. Him, bernard king, Dave Cowens, iceman weren't that great.

Loved the Big E!...He was a huge part of my childhood being raised in the DMV. "Bullets Fever" 'til I die. I've never heard before that he was NOT extended love on this farewell season for his contributions to the NBA and the game of basketball. Sad to hear this about my childhood hero and eventual fraternity brother as I would also pledge Iota Phi Theta, Fraternity, Inc.

the Big E got a bad rap with Sportswriters and it carried on to the public. But E wasn't as bad as people say. But Big E played hard all the time and wanted to be on the court. unlike todays babies that want to get paid for 82 games - but play 50 games. the league is now a JOKE

I read this hilarious story once of when the Bullets visited China during a preseason back in the '70s. They visited the Great Wall but Elvin Hayes just stayed on the bus, saying "I've seen a big wall before". Unseld tried telling him about how it's the only man-made structure visible from outer space and Hayes just said "I'm not going to outer space".

Elvin Hayes and Rick Barry may be among the most hated, but it will never take away from what they achieved in their careers. Just forget about popularity and focus on what they actually did when they played the game.

I fell in love with the Big E's game as soon as he was traded to the Bullets. His greatness as a player is well documented. His behavior and quirks that so sorely got lambasted are not without explanation, it just takes a fair minded person to understand the man. His upbringing in the deep south, and the distrust of the white world he was discovering were factors he tried desperately to grasp. Outside of Guy Lewis he had no mentors to help him embrace this changing world he was thrust into. He was used, manipulated and betrayed by many he trusted along the way. His speech impediment didn't help when he desperately attempted to communicate his fears and insecurities. Instead the writers made jokes about him, and teammates shut him out. He rose to fame during the most turbulent times for a black athlete, and unlike KAJ ( raised in NY) he lacked the savvy to fit in and adapt. I will fearlessly defend this legend and his outrageous accomplishments on the court. When the ball was tossed up to start the game. He was always "locked in" and gave 100%. He indeed expected teammates to perform at his high level, but lacked the ability to for reasons stated, to lift them up to his level. Few can do this and they are well known. The Big E is a Champion non the less and adored by millions. His game and contributions to it are unfortunately tarnished by the weak, selfish and self serving experts that control this narrative. Unlike many stars that have been built up by the media and alike only to be a "flash" in the pan or even slightly successful in the eyes of many, then torn down by the very media that created them. Hayes career doesn't need the media. They didn't create him. His performances through his career created this magnificent player. Most misunderstood and neglected player from his era and that is the shame of it all. Thank you Big E for your unbelievable contributions in the game you played and the lessons from life you do desperately tried to navigate.

Was a bit young before I got into watching basketball (mainly in 84-85, shortly after the Big E's retirement)...fortunately there's TH-cam and before that, Classic Sports Network.
Honestly I think he got some short-shrift in his retirement. He wasn't perfect, but he certainly wasn't an ogre...it's well known that Kareem was quite a bit standoffish with the public, yet he was cheered when he played his final year (even in Boston)!
Fans can be fickle. This day and age especially!
