That awning is amazing. I bought the side tent for additional space and my big dog and it doesn’t really work for me but cost a lot. I’ll look at the rhino rack for sure.
We looked into getting the batwing awning for the back of our teardrop, but we live up north in Canada and it didn't have good reviews for wind. It certainly is a great looking awning though. We just ended up getting a regular 10 by 10 with the walls.
I always tell people get what works for you. In this video I had the batwing awning setup in probably about 40MPH winds and that's about where I would say the limits are.
Man.. the desert sheiks have nothing on you ! .....Truly nice!. I would use the camper all I can. Winds consistently at 10-12 Sucks when trying to sleep and if your car is a bit off leveled your hurting. Yes two fit as long it’s a babe! Bottom-Line your gear head! ✝️🌅🏁👍.
Really like what you've done with the T@G! We've been oscillating between the comforts of the T@B 400 and the agility of the T@G and think I've got my wife sold on the T@G finally with your initial review and this upgrade video (I owe ya one!). She really like the batwing! I love the Lock n Roll hitch though did have my sights on a Max Coupler initially. How did you run the propane line into the trailer and secure it? That would be an interesting video in and of itself. Our once concern with the T@G and going cross country long haul, are boondock spots so we can set up our own facilities. Don't know if this unit would be allowed/practical in a Walmart overnighter when needing to use the powder room at night. Don't think Walmart et al would take kindly to a privacy tent set up in their parking lot lol.
I went back and forth between the Tag and the Tab. If I felt the Tab would work off-road I probably would have gone that route. In the end I felt it was just too high and the center of gravity would become an issue especially going off road. Also storage was a consideration on my part. I wanted to make sure the trailer would fit in the garage and the tab definitely would not. That being the case I would have had to have found/paid to store the trailer offsite. This would have created issues for me as I would have had to have dealt with the inconvenience of moving things back and forth to and from the trailer from the house. I ran the gas line under the frame of the trailer and secured it just like the other gas lines that come stock from the factory. The only thing that was a little nerve-wracking was I had to drill a hole from the bottom of the trailer into the inside which puts the gas line under the framing that the mattress sits on. I sealed all the holes that I drilled with trailer putty which is what the trailer shops do anyhow. I'm pretty happy with the end solution. As far as setting up in the Walmart parking lot goes I've done that quite a few times without the privacy tent. In the end I think it just comes down to what you're primary use will be. These are both great trailers. Happy Camping
Wow great setup I have the same teardrop trailer, and would like that kind of awning, what brackets are you using to get it to hang off the side, I’m trying to keep clearance for my garage.
Josh St John interesting I emailed Rhino rack and asked them what would fit a Yakima rack with round rods they sent a picture of some mounts for a more square tubing. You just ordered the standard Batwing(maybe there is only one kind).
@@vegpwrshlominator1873 I'll have to go back and figure out the PN for brackets. I beleive I ordered a Yakima universal mounting kit in addition to the stock mounts but didnt end up needing them.
Josh St John appreciate the response I haven’t bought the batwing Yet I’m just using a canopy for now, but hopefully I’ll be upgrading soon. Enjoyed watching your video’s they look great. Some of those shots you must have used a drone.
Josh, what kind of 6V batteries are you using exactly? You said 220 Ah, which seems huge. Most batteries with that kind of charge cost hundreds of dollars (up to $900). I believe the stock battery is an Interstate HD24-DP dual purpose marine battery rated at 64Ah, which is fairly analogous to other deep cycle batteries for RVs (such as Optimas).
To be honest the "usable tank" makes it not worth it at this point. Although there is an 11 Gallon tank only 7 is actually usable (because of where the pump taps into the tank). I'm very seriously thinking about upgrading to a 25 Gallon tank and in that case I would go with a small tankless heater.
The size of the tank is one of the things I'm concerned about for purchasing this unit. How hard do you think it would be to upgrade the tank to 25 gallons? The water heater is the second issue for those post mountain bike showers and washing dishes in cold weather. How difficult would one of those be to install do you think?
My plan was to basically mount a 25 gallon reservoir under the frame of the trailer and put a skid plate over it. I also have a little electric tank-less heater but now I'm leaning towards looking at the propane water heaters. In short both should be relatively easy upgrades. I wouldn't let it deter you from your purchase but you may to ask around at the local trailer shops to see what input they have.
Hey Josh, have you had any issues with the size of the batwing awning on the teardrop. I think that guy is 8 feet across but the pillars on the rack are about 3 and half feet max distance. I just bought the ARB awning with tent it’s about 7 feet long. Still waiting for the thing to arrive in the mail, but seams pretty large for the space.
Fully extended it clears it but I typically pitch the awning until it almost meets the back hatch when opened. I do this to keep any rain from running back towards the trailer itself.

Although I would prefer to have the RTT on the Tear Drop's roof I just don't trust it. I've had the Yakima Towers shake loose when going off road and the idea of having 180lbs RTT sitting on top would make me very nervous. In addition I was not able to find the dynamic/static weight rating specific to Yakima Rack specifically on the Tag which was the final nail in the coffin for me. Not only that I know the jeeps roof rack will easily support the load and since my Jeep is my tow vehicle it just made more since to go that route. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the video, want to get this awning for my tear drop but the reviews I’ve read on amazon most say that the hinge breaks on the first use. Have you had any issues with the awning falling apart?
In high wind yes. The hinges are plastic and if everything is not tied / staked down they will snap/break. That said I believe this is by design and they are replaceable. I suggest carrying a back up set of 4 just in case.
I have watched a kibillion Tag videos and yours in the first to show an areial view of the awning...great job and I love it!
thanks for the review. really helped with my research into what kind of mii camper to choose

Hello Josh , that's a pretty cool setup that you have there , good job !!! 👋😊
nicely done video. I getting ready to purchase a t@b 320 boondocks. You have amazing tips. Thank you.
Thanks. I'm sure you'll love it
Liked the tent awning. Tripled your area. Little pricey but worth it.
Absolutely :D
Great presentation of the batwing awning.

Enjoy it. I love the Grand Tetons. May be headed back up that way in fall.
Great mods, Thanks for the update John

If I wasn't going off road I probably would have gone with Tab but it would have been close.
Can you do video on how you attach the bat wing to the TAG roof rack?
I will try and set aside some time to this but it might be a bit
Thank You! =Cosmo

Tear Drop can be the base camp; while you explore and can spend the night some distance away from base camp ⛺️
Doing that at the end of this April. Setting up base camp in Sand Flats Campground in MOAB and then heading out to do some 4 wheeling :D
Could a small rooftop tent be mounted about the T@g? Our daughter wants to go camping with us, But we dont want to buy another camper.
Probably not. I have mine on the roof of my tow vehicle because I could not find specifics on dynamic and static weight for the Yakima rack

How has the Tag held up so far?
Hey question: do you still own your TAG?
Love this video.
No I decides to go bigger. I love the T@G and it still an amazing trailer.
Another great video! Do you happen to have any info on water heaters?

No issues but I did have to buy a mounting kit because the awning did not come with the hardware necessary to mount to the Yakima poles.
Yeah I did to, I bought mine from gowesty hopefully these guys fit!
Can I ask what your tongue weight is with the two 20# propane tanks and two 6v batteries? Thanks!
Can you open the galley door fully with the awning opened to full extension or does the hatch door hit the awning and rest against it?
Fully extended it clears it but I typically pitch the awning until it almost meets the back hatch when opened. I do this to keep any rain from running back towards the trailer itself.
The more I look at these I keep leaning towards a bone stock hiker with RTT
Thoughts on adding a Roof Top Tent to a TAG Boondock?
I loved the idea but I couldn't get a straight answer about weight / loads. Personally I don't think the rack will support the load
Hi Josh. Nice upgrades! Curious to know how the awning and panels handle windy weather. Thanks :)
It's survived 30 mph gust winds so far. Just make sure and attach as many guy lines as possible if you know it will be windy ;)
I see two sizes for the awning on etrailer. Which is yours?
I got the bigger awning
Please send a link or more info on the off road hitch! Thanks!
