In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm joined by my wife Megan as we listen to a cover version of A Dangerous Game from the musical Jekyll & Hyde. We love Floor, and we're both listening to this cover version for the first time. Hear some of the backstory of this musical, why I very much like it, and how wonderfully Floor and Henk perform it. I believe he will just talk over their singing, so he hear as little as possible.
Fun fact: Floor had gall bladder surgery about a month prior to this recording. Just two weeks after her surgery, she performed (remotely) for the Beste Zangers Songfestival, singing Loreen's "Euphoria".
This is also in her live show where they get to perform together rather than remotely. The interaction is stunning.

Now you need to hear them live at Floor's solo show in Amsterdam back in September. Both Dangerous Games and Sweet Curse. Just beautiful. Definitely need to hear them sing Phantom of the Opera.

Floor and Henk sound great together, wonderful singers and nice people! The Dutch tv show they were on together was indeed ‘De beste zangers’ which means ‘The Best Singers’. On the show different Dutch singers get together and sing covers of them all and favorite songs, it’s very cool! Greetings from the Netherlands!

It's so awesome to watch them live after the covid restraints. Fantastic concert.
Doug, please for the love of god, watch these two performing Phantom of the Opera, it's kinda mind blowing.
Floor would have been a star in musical theater also. She always acts all the way through the song. Henk and Floor's connection is so wonderful everything they have done is pure joy, the mutual respect is just so clear in their stage presence. One aspect of floor that gets overlooked is how well she adapts to her partners. I think that shows clearest with her and Simone's Sabat Mater where Floor takes the alto part and seamlessly supports.
Marko does that too, when they are together, wow, magic happens.
@@stpfs9281 That is so true. Marko is amazing and as he an Floor worked together they got even better. There are some very magical moments when they let their voices play with each other subtly letting dominance play between them with both tone and timber. But I'm going to give Floor the nod here, controlling her natural resonance to fit a partner has to be top of mind constantly.

Beste Zangers has some fantastic clips with Floor. The duet version of "Shallow", from "A Star is Born", featuring Tim Akkerman, is fantastic. It's way better than the soundtrack version with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
FYI there are now live performances of Floor & Henk's duo from Floor's solo show on her TH-cam channel.
You should have listened to the live version of this song. Floor did 3 live sold out shows in Amsterdam Sept. 2021 and they sang this on stage side by side LIVE Y'ALL. Always listen to your reactions. Adding your wife is a nice touch.
Henk poort is alsoo a fully trained Bariton Opera singer besides just singing and doing musicals where he is mostley cast as a Tenor.
Yes, but this isn't opera singing, it is crossover. Which is the style you need for musicals.

Actually the last musical I was in was Jekyll and Hyde.
We performed it this past October at the Shoals Theater. I love the gothic musical atmosphere of the musical and the story which borrowed elements from the original novel is amazing. There’s so many versions of this show though. They’ve rewritten it several times from its original inception. Lately it’s had huge success in South Korea, I believe. Shame it hasn’t been performed in awhile on Broadway. I played the part of Simon Stride in the show. I love Anthony Warlow’s Jekyll and Hyde version though.
This was an amazing 'collabroration at a distance' during covid. Floor has done a show last autumn in Amsterdam in which Henk had a couple of guest appearences. That show was professional recorded (crowdfunded) and is now being published on floors channel. It includes a live performance of this song, but also of an older song 'Sweet curse' of her previous band Revamp (written by floor, performed less metal because of a more general audience). The other cool thing about this is that they were not together doing this. They were in different parts of the world which makes doing a duet much more difficult as you cannot feed off each other.

Didn't that happen the same way with Jesus Christ Superstar, the album in 1970 (with Ian Gillan) and later the musical all over the world and the movie? This is the 'covid version', not recorded in the same studio. Floor and Henk performed it live during her concert Live in Amsterdam late 2021 (see her website) and I saw it on tv when a theater show of Henk Poort was broadcasted. Even better when they share the same stage.

Fun fact: Henk recorded his video part in front of his garage door in order to try to match the rustic look of Floor's home studio recording. If your looking for women in music to feature might I suggest someone you have no doubt heard a bit from; Marcela Bovio, one of the greatest (and most criminally overlooked) vocalists on the planet (Prove me wrong!). She started out in Mexico trained in opera, answered Arjen Lucassen's call for new vocalists for Ayreon, and he created a new band, "Stream of Passion" for her. She recently had a cancer scare which luckily sees her now in remission.
For a very challenging metal vocal check out on her TH-cam channel: 'Marcela Bovio - Stream of Passion's "Monster" one take live performance', or just about anything else. You won't be disappointed.
Floor not only is a wonderful singer in her own right but can sing with anyone because she is so empathic. I have heard her sing with so many other artists and never dominates unless it is called for. She is currently releasing every song from her recent solo concert with guest appearance from Henk covering her musical history so far and it's superb. Personal favourite is an oldie called Face Your Demons.

Loved "meeting" your wife here. You'll have to have her on more. I loved watching her reaction, along with yours. So cool that you both share the same love of music. Thanks for introducing us to this musical. Always love anything Floor does. Now I want to see / hear the entire musical. I was actually "raised" on musicals. Mom and Dad always had some musical playing, and singing along. We saw a lot of Broadway shows since we lived in Philadelphia/ New Jersey. How did I miss this one?

That the both of you managed to head-bop in unison without being cued by the other is quite fun. As for Women's Day/Month, I'm gonna beg: please review Diamanda Galas' song Skotoseme, feat. John Paul Jones, on The John Stewart Show, 1994. Vocally speaking, Galas is in a category of her own. What Steve Vai does with his guitar she does with her voice. She's, also, a great pianist, though she's not playing it here. Great review. Best! J

As a suggestion for female singer, how about the band "All about Eve" for example their song December from the album "Scarlet and other stories".
Yes, Julianne Regan. She had such great voice back in the 80s. The first two albums are wonderful folk/pop/rock with an amazing female voice. I must admit, I had a crush on her back then. She was like an Irish fairy to me (the band is from Leeds/England I think, but she's of Irish origin, which gives her another big point in my book... ;-) Unfortunately there's not so much recent stuff to find. But now being an older woman she maybe turned towards other artistic possibilities.
Wow. I didn't know about Doug's roots in Kansas City. We're the same age, so I wonder if we ever crossed paths at some point. If you're looking for another strong female metal vocalist, a name I don't see pop up on a lot of reaction channels is Doro Pesch, or just Doro. She fronted the band Warlock in the 80s and later went solo. She has a great, strong, raspy voice that sounds just as good today as it did nearly 40 years ago. Check out the Warlock song "All We Are," or her solo song "All for Metal." They are both great, heart pounding anthems that will make you want to raise your fist and cheer.
A good band to do for "American History Month" is the band Oceans of Slumber. They have just released a new song for their upcoming album but in the past they also covered / made their version of "Strange Fruit" Worth checking them out and their music.

Not a complaint, but just information: Floor's little sister's name is (apparently) pronounced something like ee-RAYN-eh. At least, that's how John Jaycee Cuijpers introduced her in the live version of "The Two Gates" from the Ayreon Universe concert.
You should definitely look at Floor and Henk's duet of Phantom from Beste Zangers. It went viral for a reason.

You really need to react to them both on the same show together doing the phantom. I have seen some of the best productions in the world of the phatam and les mis ( got to see Colm Wilkinson in les mis twice, Anthony warlow as the phantom 3 times, so many greats , but having a heavier phantom with the two of them a meter apart and her power wow great fun

Need more ladies to spotlight? Two (kinda three maybe) suggestions for you. 1: How 'bout violin/dance TH-cam phenom Lindsey Stirling?!?! All my other favorite reactors are vocal coaches and since she is almost exclusively instrumental, there isn't much of hers that would fit their niche. But I bet she could fit in here with you quite well and I'd enjoy hearing what you have to say about her. I think "Crystalize" is her earliest break-out song. Maybe a good place to start. And 2/3: Scardust! A heavy metal band from Israel with lady lead singer. Their song that I am going to link features another TH-camr, Patty Gurdy, a young German lady who is a Celtic folk inspired hurdy gurdy player and vocalist. Also featuring Hellscore Choir, 30-40 voice acapella choir that does covers of various heavy metal songs, also from Israel. And last, also featuring a string quartet of who's name and background I'm not aware.

It was supposed to happen during the shows in 2020 which got cancelled due to Covid.. Many are really loooking forward to that show and the guest performance of Henk.. no doubt there wil be video(s) to review/react to ;)

I would love to see you react to an amazing song by a nearly forgotten band "Chase". You could actually choose between two songs, "Open Up Wide" or "Get It On". This is called fusion by some people, but it's really rock performed by four trumpets and a rhythm section.

"Beste zangers" is not a competition but a program in which 7 singers sing songs to each other. They are songs that are special for the other person or written by them.

Fun fact if you decide to do Beste Zangers, unfortunately the producers decided to use some pitch correction on the program without telling the singers. Doesn't spoil the performances for me but it is something you ought to be aware of if you do a reaction video. Remember Fil on Wings of Pegasus talking about this, sadly I cannot remember for the life of me which video of his it was.
