  • As I've been experimenting with different mirrorless camera options from Sony, like the a7S ii & a7R ii, I've tried using both native Sony lenses and adapting Canon lenses to them.
    Check today's prices below: geni.us/metabones
    I've had a less than stellar experience using Canon glass on Sony bodies, so I wanted to share a little bit about what you can expect if you're trying to make the switch to Sony from Canon and plan to bring a bunch of EF or EF-S lenses along with you for the ride.
    In this video I explain which of the many adapters I recommend getting, my experience with the speed and reliability of auto-focus in both photo and video mode, and whether I even recommend keeping your Canon lenses when you make a switch to mirrorless cameras.
    Special thanks to B&H for loaning me the a7R ii to use and be on the lookout for my full review next week.

    Dude, you need to do some more testing. Been using the 35mm 1.4L Mark II on my a7III with the Sigma adapter. Works perfectly. No problems with Eye AF either. You recommend sticking to Sony glass. Ofcourse you want native glass but the problem is that Sonys used prices are insane and you get much better price on used glass if you buy Canon glass.

    I will never sell my L series lenses. I have successfully used Canon 85 mm 1.2 L II for amazing results with reasonable AF using Metabone Ultra. Your experience may have been with older lenses and probably older rev of Metabone. I also use 24 mm 1.4 L and Canon Fisheye plus 16-35 version II L. None of these lenses have caused any grief and results are outstanding.

    From my experience with Canon L lenses on A7 II and Sigma MC-11, things are not as you suggested, but much better:
    - the combo is awesome for photos, stills but also fast moving subjects
    - face detection mode focuses already on the eyes, no need for eye af!
    - best mode for fast af is the wide area
    - focus is very fast, similar speed with my Canon camera 5DII, depends on lens speed of course, some lenses are blazing fast on both cameras, some are slower on both cameras
    - using the MC-11 with Canon L lenses is not good for video, a lot of hunting and focus noise, should use Sony lenses for that purpose

    I agree. Native > Non Native in majority of cases. The price of the Sony lens is what makes it hard. If I had to redo it all over again I would have saved up and purchased only Sony Native lens. For my A7s2 my line up would be Sony 16-35mm F4 and 28-135mm G lens. For my A7r2 pretty much the same as above but add a Sony 55mm 1.8, 90mm Macro 2.8 and a 70-200mm F4.

    I know this video is a couple of years old, but I'm having great success using Canon glass on my Sony a7rii. I use the Sigma MC-11 adapter and use it with Canon 24-105 IS STM L glass, Canon 50 1.8 STM, and an older 100-300 Canon lens. Auto focus is quick and precise. The only thing I don't have is Auto Eye Focus. I wouldn't use this set up for videos unless in manual, but for still photography, it works wonderfully and I've gotten beautiful, crisp, sharp photos. I also have the Sony 28 F2 and Sony 85 1.8 which are great too. But if I only had one walk about lens, it would be between the Canon L 24-105 or Canon 50 1.8. I've owned two Sony FE 50. 1.8 lens and the auto focus was terrible. I far prefer the image quality and focus on the Canon 50mm. The best part, I got the Canon 50mm lens on sale, new for 81 dollars, and the Canon L 24-105 used for $350. The Canon 100-300 I got used for about 70 dollars. Up to 200mm the pictures are as crisp and wonderful as the Canon 70-200 L lens I had.

      @@nicedward7544 if it was an a7riii, I would say, yes. But you would have some hits and misses. Plus with the riii, you have eye af too. But with the a7rii, it would work, but more misses than hits. I have both cameras. I would rather use the aiii, or one of their apsc cameras with a native lens for sports. You can shoot sports with the a7rii, but be prepared for a lot of missed shots. I just shot some track last weekend with the a7riii and an old canon 200mm.f2.8 lens. With your combo, birding would be tough. Plus for shooting birds, you would need at least a 300-400mm lens.

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Native lenses, whether made by Sony or others like Zeiss are the best for autofocus on Sony, but the joy of mirrorless like the Sony or Panasonic etc, is the image magnification which makes manual focus a breeze. Native glass still has an advantage because of exif data, but as far as usability goes, older Nikon lenses with aperture rings, and Canon FD mount glass are a joy to use on the Sony bodies and give access to the specialty lenses that are not present in the native line-up. Older Nikon lenses are surprisingly cheap considering their superb quality, but too often get left out of the conversation. The manual focus Nikon’s and the Canon FD solve the size problem, and at any given focal length are the best value for money on a Sony full frame mirrorless camera.

    The a7R II and the Metabones Smart Adapter mk4 T with certain Canon lenses work as good as the same lenses natively with the Canon 5D mk3. Those two lenses are 24-70 f2.8L II and 70-200 f2.8L II (they both focus instantly and accurately!), and the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L II also works, but it's much slower (it's also slower with a Canon body). These 3 Canon lenses have a superb image quality and sharpness.
    I also tried the Canon 85mm f1.8 (non-L) with the a7R II. It is a wonderful lens, but it doesn't want to find focus with the a7R II when it's a bit darker than normal outdoor daylight or sunshine. It didn't focus indoors.
    I once tried the Canon 300mm f2.8 prime, and it also worked quite well. The 50mm f1.2 also works, but not as good as the 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 which are my favorites.
    The a7S II autofocus doesn't really work well with adapted lenses.

    Hi Caleb. Thanks for the video, but I have to strongly disagree, at least for video applications. I have an a7sII that I use 90% of the time for video. I have both Sony native e-mount lenses and Canon L series zoom lenses, and I use my Canon lenses almost all of time for shooting video.
    The main reason is Sony’s/Zeiss incomprehensible decision to use focus-by-wire in their e-mount lenses. Anyone who has ever tried to do a rack-focus or hit a specific focus point with a focus-by-wire lens knows that it is extremely difficult to do. And to your argument about AF not working optimally with an adapter, in video applications, most serious cinematographers use manual focus.
    However, for photo applications, I use Sony native lenses exclusively.
    So, in my case, it depends on if your shooting video or photos. But since most people who purchase an a7sII will do so for shooting video, I highly recommend holding
    on to your Canon glass!

      Forgot to mention, aside from the esthetics of the images produced by Canon glass which many find more pleasing than the cold "clinical" look of Sony lenses, Canon EF mount is an industry standard and these lenses will keep their value for years to come. Many of the top camera bodies offer an EF mount version (RED, Blackmagic, Canon, etc.). The same is not true with e-mount. So once you go down this road, you're stuck with it. As technology evolves, and your needs evolve, chances are you will want to upgrade your camera. But good glass stays with you. So in a nutshell, I would definitely build a kit around the glass and not around the camera. Much more future proof in my humble opinion.

    I'm only just looking at adaptors for my Canon glass to Sony e-mount and after watching your video realise it'll soon be three years old. But I still think it's very relative to my search for the right adaptor. I think in the end and for subjective reason you are right in suggesting sticking to Sony glass, I have decided however to purchase the EOS-NEX K&F Concept for a mere £17.00 Sterling. It will allow me to use a lot of my Canon glass, 70-200 mkii 16-35 f1.8 and others, maybe not all the features will work correctly but hay, it's only a few quid, and allows me to use my Canon lenses and anyway, maybe I'll adapt. Thanks Celeb.

Minolta 28mm f/.2.8, Minolta 70-210 f/.4, Sony 16 f/.2.8 (Fisheye) and Sigma 35 f/1.4 A-Mount with Sony LA-EA4 (Adapter) works perfect in A-Mount and E-Mount (No regret)... Thanks for the helpful information. I'd been contemplating this exact change, looking to upgrade from my 6D. While on vacation, a fellow photographer saw my body with the 70-300L lens and commented about the weight saying he had switched to Sony and used an adapter. This really got me thinking. However, even before viewing your video, I wondered about any compatibility issues. I think my questions have been answered. It's one thing to use, say a Sigma lens meant for a Canon body but another to adapt a Canon lens (or Nikon for that matter) to a Sony mirrorless. It is strongly rumored that Canon will announce a full frame mirrorless later this year so waiting seems the prudent thing. I have subscribed to your site and will wait for your tests results!

      Try that same commlite with wide angle lenses with longer exposures, you will notice how badly engineered it is - distortions at the corners are too bad. Stars are stretched towards the corners images unusable.. Many flare/ light leak issues using IR filter and probably with strong ND filter... I do not recommend commlite anymore.

    I don't own any Sony lenses, but have rented some, and have always gone back to my canon glass mounted on my Sony. My biggest complaint is that I shoot in all kinds of weather, and while shooting Sony lenses that are not weather sealed I found as I went through my images while shooting sony zooms dust starting to collect on the sensor showing up in the images themselves. I do not have this issue with the Canon L lenses. I thought the days of zooms being dust vacuums were gone, and was surprised to see it show up again. This is a deal breaker for me. I can manually focus when need be. Its how we shot for decades. I can't put up with dust on the sensor though.
    In good light conditions I have found the autofocus reliability to be about the same as native sony lenses. In low light I find the sony lenses will hunt, but eventually focus. With Canon on Sony low light focus is much more problematic - so I manually focus. For much of what I do, this is not an issue.
    One weird side effect is that when I first started using Canon on Sony, the camera with a canon lenses in the beginning would take a little extra time to become available. I have noticed a significant reduction in the amount of time to "ready" now. Not sure what the difference is, but I am not complaining.

    Hi Caleb. Thanks so much for posting this video. I'm in a position of starting to build my camera collection and decided to go with the A7SII. I would mostly be using this camera for stills (for fun) but want to be able to shoot corporate videos with it also. Currently I rent the C100 or C300 for those and so I'm familiar and like the Canon system and their lenses especially the 24-70 F2.8 II and the 70-200mm F2.8 II. But after much research online (haven't been able to test it myself), it seems the Metabones Mark IV despite the latest update doesn't perform reliably for auto focus in video mode which is where I would need it. So now I've got an A7SII and two brand new Canon lenses and no adaptor yet. I'm thinking of selling the two Canon lenses and buying the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 G master series and the Sony 70-200mm F4 G OSS as I can't afford the equivalent G master. Part of me thinks that somewhere down the line (hopefully not too distant) the autofocus for video will improve with another firmware update but since I'm starting from scratch, perhaps I should just invest in one system? I do prefer the colour of Canon and the "softness/warmth" of their images. Or keep the Canon lenses and continue to hire the C300 for jobs?

    Always thought that it the lens quality that is most important. The Sony cameras are amazing, still ahead of Nikon and Canon when it comes to mirrorless but, the big problem for me is that although Sony Lenses are fantastic, they are a lot more expensive. I would worry about using adaptors purely because most reviews don't recommend them. So for me, I would probably stick with Canon or Nikon until decent adaptors are released which don't compromise a shot or its image quality.

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had the same problems. I do love Sony mirrorless systems but all my lenses are from Canon and they provide my favorite look. While Metabones adapters are great they do compromise the system in a few small ways.

    Good info about the adapted lenses. BTW, digital zoom when using the Metabones Speedbooster and Canon glass with my SONY FS5 does work. As you mention, auto focus performance is poor, but I typically focus manually whenever shooting video. Regarding the suggestion of replacing Canon glass with SONY glass, that is an expensive proposition. It comes down to what gear the photographer/videographer already owns, their workflow and future camera needs. Speaking strictly for myself, I am not keen on SONY glass, and the auto focus limitations using Canon glass on my SONY FS5 are a non-issue. Just my 2 cents, adjusted for inflation...

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for chiming in Dave. That is super helpful to know. When manually focusing, the ability to digital zoom and check focus is a must for me, so I'm glad that is an option on the FS5, as I might switch over to that.

    I have both the Sigma MC-11 and Metabones Smart "T" IV adapters.... with the latest firmware update for the MC-11 (literally released yesterday), I'm surprised how much better the 135L is now (vs the Metabones... which also has the latest FW). Focusing is pretty good with the flexible spot pushed to the corners ("rule of 3rds" corners), where as with the Metabones, it still struggles... THAT being said, I'm referring to static subjects, I haven't tested it on tracking moving subjects (especially subjects coming towards me), but my guess is that it's still not great.

    Agree. I got Commlite adapter on Sony a7R. And autofocus is completely useless with my Canon EF 28mm f1.8. I don't know if that was the right choice I've made.. I mainly shoot static objects and places so I didn't mind manual focusing at first. But then I started to wish I had the possibility from time to time shoot my family events with my work gear.. But hey, I just don't have enough money, and to get something equal to my Canon glass I would need Zeiss... it just hurts to be poor.

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @trolledyou7032
      @trolledyou7032 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      $399 hmmm, no thanks, I'm not going to invest more on that platform. I have a7R mark I, with a contrast AF, so I don't think Metabones will be any better when it comes to AF speed. I would prefer spend that money on the native mount E lens. As I told before, I don't think it was the right decision I've made.
      If I invested 100-200 bucks more, I could have bought a native Sony or Zeiss lens, but I was naive and bought the Canon lens in hope it will work for me without emptying my wallet on Zeiss, that is on pair with the quality of Canon I bought.
      Sorry guys, but it's not good at all. Some Canon lenses might work on a7rII, or a6300 but most won't anyway in a "usable" way. If you shoot stills or landscapes only, go ahead, but at the end it doesn't feel like it's a 21 century camera. More than half of AF settings doesn't work with the adapter, it's hunting and it's slow as hell. Don't rise your hopes up, like I did. It could work with three or four Canon lenses, so it might not be completely useless if you are lucky.
      Sony is expensive platform, even if it doesn't seem like one. Body costs half of Canon's, but then you ALWAYS have to consider the lenses price. Then you realize the actual cost is the same as of the other brands after all.
      Sorry to discourage you all, but adapters are for poor people like me, or as a last resort, if you don't want to sell your Canon lens collection (if you have one). Definitely not for a professional work. And it will NEVER replace the native lenses. My two cents from my experience:
      -If you plan to buy Sony body, plus adapter and Canon lens, because you don't wan't to spend too much money = DON'T. Invest a bit more and buy a native lens!
      -If you have big Canon lens collection already (but good EF ones) = okay, but consider the fact you won't use the camera in the fullest.
      -If you wan't to shoot people, sports = don't even bother!
      -If you wan't to shoot people, sports, AND have a big Canon lens collection = SELL Canon collection, and buy a good Zeiss lens, or two.
      -If you are okay with manual focusing in many cases = okay, go for it.

    If both camera and lense do not weather sealing, ex. Sony A7iii and zeiss 16 35mm f4, then how to use it in cold or wet conditions ? Suppose while trekking in himalayas,
    Is canon eos r and 16 35mm f4 a better option? Can anyone suggest?

    Thanks for the great review , thanks to you I got the details clear, which I couldn't earlier even after watching tons of videos and finally decided not to buy canon lens for my Sony A6000 series

    Did you tried the metabones Mark IV from Canon?, I read it is one of the best for adapting Canon Lenses to Sony bodies...
