@@AA-bn7tf War Thunder is not exactly a reliable source, especially as thickness and composition of armour goes. This tank entred in service when the the main competitor was the Leopard 2 A4, and it's pretty comparable for protection, armament fire control etc. Counting only the thickness of the lower front glacis, that of the Leo 2 is short of 40mm. Simply the author counts the space between the glacis and the pilot as "armour" for the Leo 2 and "not armour" for the Ariete, but nor him nor War Thunder know what those spaces are filled of because, guess what? Is classified. The "new armor package for the side armor" is the PSO package. Other than that (and more common than that actually) there is the WAR package, that includes front enhanced protection of the turret as well. In 2015, when the order had been suspended, waiting for the general upgrade of all the existing tanks, 6 thanks had been upgraded to PSO standard and 20 to the WAR. forum.warthunder.com/uploads/monthly_2019_06/ei_arietewar_1.jpg.22bbef9fbf83af53bae19662f9f2f817.jpg forum.warthunder.com/uploads/monthly_2019_06/ei_arietewar_4.jpg.260203ee4825b79712358be878f7decd.jpg forum.warthunder.com/uploads/monthly_2019_06/ei_arietewar_2.jpg.d8ae8aafebdfc8f82a87d55483c73f12.jpg forum.warthunder.com/uploads/monthly_2019_06/Ariete_C1.jpg.c77ba8ee02d6f770b4c8e18710ca7d9e.jpg

G J Resa You can't fight corruption with a tank. When several key members are on the payroll of the Mafia you'll find it difficult to engage anybody knowing they're well ingrained into several layers of society and have a long reach.
centauro II though is kicking ass :D and its italian maybe they are focusing more on wheeled light vehicles that carry a big bunch rather than heavy and more costly armor .
@@kousand9917 yeah, a couple prototypes. And what's upgraded in them? The drivetrain basically, and other stuff taken from the Centauro II. Only 125 tanks will be upgraded. Maybe. Centauro II is just better and makes more sens for Italy. Especially considering that the ariete won't get (never) good armour.
That will not be very funny when Ceaușescu's boys come after this channel with fervent nationalistic claims of being an ambush tank, "ze best tanc ho defit Avraham M1 in exercize, Muh Dacia Stronk, vi not Roman, Russian channel bad". Just joking, but mostly not.
The armor of the Ariete is classified, but it has been stated that actually it has composite armor in the lower plate of the hull.. mate you basically made a video on a tank using only info found on war thunder, I mean seriously?🤦🏻♂️
TheCommentaryKing yeah.. I mean I know that the Ariete is not the best mbt in Europe, and for this reason we are funding the upgrade for the tank and in 2026 we will start a new tank project.. but if you do a video about the ariete, you either state what you know for a fact or don’t say anything at all, because as I think all European MBT the Ariete has mostly a classified armor, we just know that it’s a composite armor
I would like just to point something out: 1- It's true that the tank isn't really up to date, but seeing that Italy has just 1/5 of its borders shared with other countries, and seeing that the land border is covered by really steep mountains that are hardly crossable by large armored formations, does it really matter that much to have a powerful MBT? In such a contest it is far more viable to use nimbre vehicles or shoulder carried ATGMs. 2- Linked to what I was talking above, Italy has developed the B1 Centauro to fulfill the need for a nimble vehicle capable of destroying enemy armor, such a vehicle is far more useful on harsh terrain like the Italian Alps, such vehicles has seen different series, the one currently in service is the B1 Centauro Serie 3 and the B2 Centauro 2 is currently in development, this shows how Italy is much more focused on developing nimble, fast vehicles than Main Battle Tanks 3- Recent wars has showed that the MBT is slowly but steadely falling out of favor, it is possible to see that with the recent Turkish campain in Siria, where their far more capable modernised Leopard 2A4 got destroyed multiple times by militias armed with shoulder launched ATGMs 4- Italy is sort off updating the C1 Ariete, what is known till now is that it will recieved an upgraded engine, whider tracks, new breaks, transmission and turret rotation mechanism. Unfortunately is not known if the WAR addon armor kits will be updated too (for the frontal part of the tank) and if it will still use the addon armor PSO Tipo 2 (for the sides)
You are literally wrong in every point that you made. Italian border with other countries is not a concern in Italian doctrine. They are bordering allied nations and risk of fighting war there does not exist. Italy is member of NATO and as such might at any time be called to defend other NATO members and to participate in some coalition wars, those scenarios are much, much more likelay than war with Switzerland and in those scenarios Italian tanks would have very hard time. Turkish leopard 2a4s are not much more modern than ariete and they come from basically same time period. Beside that Turkish use of tanks was not a fiasco by any means. Yes they lost few tanks in first couple of weeks against ISIS armed with modern ATGMs (as would any nation on the planet) but they successfully used their armored formations and first managed to defeat isis and take El Bab, then they used them successfully again in Afrin and again against YPG in North eastern Syria. Even recently in idlib against pretty well armed so called Syrian Arab army Turkish armor support and SPGs played significant role. No ATGMs used in Syria are shoulder launched. Tanks are not falling out of favour and pretty much every world power is developing/producing/introducing next generation tanks as we speak. Italians also are modernizing their tanks but only in talk because we are still to se a first one.
At close range perhaps a 20mm round could do it if it were cresting a hill, otherwise something like the 30mm ap rounds from a bmp 2 at close range may penetrate it
25 mm M919 APFSD-T depleted uranium round can penetrate up to around 100 mm of armor so yeah, i think many modern 20 mm and up armor piercing rounds would have a chance of penetrating it, older ones not so much.
@@TheTeKuZa there is a big inclination, so I don't think anything less than 20mm can penetrate it. 14.5 API would do it on a 90° angle sure, not on 45.
Doesn't .50 AP have like maximum ~30-40 mm of penetration, and therefore 14.5 should be similiar? Afair .50 APIT has like below 30 mm, im talking about hardened armor plate steel.
it's a decent mid 80' tank.. so in 2019 it sucks yhea... a upgade program will start in 2020-21 ca. the governement provided the founds this year for the development of the upgade
Hey.... even in the 80's Ariete sucks. In 2019 it's just hopeless. In the 80's there was the Leopard 2, Abrams, and T80, but the Italians came up with this?
Ikhsan fahri pratama It was average among the MBTs that each nation had. But it is very outdated now. Hence why it is in War Thunder the way that it is right now including the PSO package version of the Ariete where it is able to perform in the right hands.
@@kommandantkillcode You say "functions in the right hands"... experienced and well trained crews will just perform well, no matter on what tank. That still doesn't solve the problem that Ariete sucks. It's like saying "the protection of a Humvee is better than the T72 because the Humvee has a Trophy APS"... that is not true because that means the Trophy APS is what is good... It will fucntion as good on a T72 and it doesn't solve the problem that Humvee's protection is weak compared to T72
@@stateservant Obviously, it wasn't developed to be used as a frontline tank, Italy only operates in peacekeeping missions or supporting other NATO's member missions, so it's still decent at that Besides this guy just based off his assumptions on armor values of War Thunder, while the true armor values are still classified (we know it has composite in the hull, even tho the dude says it doesn't)
The C1 Ariete was good enough to reach best place behind Leopard user in the 2016 US Army held Strong European Tank Challenge... AHEAD M1A2 Sep v2... and M-84... The C1 is much comparable to the japanese Type 10 and Type 90 the Type 10 is more modern but much lighter even in the most heavy armored version, the Type 90 is larger but lighter and has only half of the operational radius of the C1... The C1 like the japanese Type 10 and 90 or the Merkava are specially designed for their nations geography... so this worst tank of NATO is a fail conclution because there are for sure much worse tanks in service like old T-72 models or the stone age old M47, M48 and M60 still in service in the turkish army... and most likely a Leo2 A7V or CH2 or M1A2 Sep with their enourmus weight of 60 to 65to would run into trouble fighting in Italy were the lighter C1 could perhaps outmaneuver them thanks to great range and the ability to cross bridges that are not able to carry the 10to more heavy tanks... Tanks like Merkava, C1 Ariete, Japanese Type 10 and Type 90 are not comparable with standart NATO tanks that were designed to go head to head with a number superior enemy on wide open north Germany country side were you could easly fight enemys between 3 to 5km range.

not true ,the only upgrade that ariete received of the ones proposed it's for the SICCONA digital trasmission and that's it ,no new enginesor transmision ,nothing.
It has a dedicated space for salami and prosciutto in a specialised anti-blast compartment. We initially thought of storing tank shells in there, but then again we'd be dead anyways so why not enjoying a nice pepperoni pizza before blowing up.
Now I don't wanna be the "actually" guy, but it seems that you literally took war thunder armor values and just slapped it in a video passim them as true values. Ariete's armor is classified information and even gaijin said that the armor is a placeholder because the don't have information. But on the site of the manufacturer it sais it has equal protection as the Leopard 2A4s, and that is without warkits modifications. So I would't say it has souch bad armor, when you dind't even have reliable information on it. Never the less it's true tha the Ariete is a tank that was build with a lack of foundings and the end of the cold war did't helped.
Astonishing how the comments lit up with all sorts of crap talking and gun tube size comparisons when the video was about Leo or Abrams or T80, etc.... The Ariete gets a turn we get spaghetti and gelato jokes. Nobody takes this thing seriously. Just saying......
and what do we ask ourselves also in Italy? and it doesn't matter for a video on a tank! the problem is that of ALL the videos that concern Italy! we would like to know why?
occhio di sauron because your one of the few country’s where when we talk shit about your country we don’t accidentally provoke a gang war between different people seriously go try and make school shooting or oil jokes in a video about the M1 abrams or British empire jokes on a video about the challenger2 or Stalin/Putin/communist jokes in a video about the T-14 it won’t end well basically what it amounts to is you guys are to polite to stand up for your selves so people make jokes it’s the same thing with Canada
Italy dont invest to much on MBT because is not necessary due to the conformation of the territory . Ariete is old and Italy have only 200. An update is planned ( MK2 ) : *new crawler tracks, wider and new final reduction units; *more powerful engines, 1500 hp against the current 1300 hp; *new transmission systems; *the entire brake system completely re-engineered; *new ballistic shooting calculator; *new pointing and observation optics that will replace the technologically outdated systems and will also seek logistical communality with the combat platforms in service (CENTAURO II armoured vehicle). Probably Italy will collaborate for the next Euro MBT together with France and Germany ( but is only a rumor for now )
Of course it is a bad tank.A bob semple(a bob semple he shell can penetrate 10000000000000000000000000000000km of armour)can destroy the ariete without even hitting it.
the ariete does actually have composite in the hull just no one knows what it is. that said the ariete isn't really italys main focus. much like japan, the terrain isn't friendly to heavy MBTs so the centauro and friends are more practical. this doesn't excuse the poor performance but it does explain it edit: also the commander and gunner both received 2nd generation thermals in an upgrade program.
for such a short video 2 ads seems a bit much maybe make the videos longer to water down the ads. (yes, I know this a silly thing to complain about but I assume he wants any feed back from his community)
The design seems very compact and sleek, with right shields, it would make a great tank. I think a lot better and effective than other monsters. Upgrade armour, electronics and gun and it's an ideal futuristic tank.
Yes the design it's fine ,but the upgrade for this tank ,which i remember all of you that are reading this comments, was already obsolete by the time it enterin in active service, well the upgrade for this tank it's about 5 millions euro ,to provvide a decent engine ,1600 cv ,new trasmission and electronics ,new active protection etc. with that money bloody hell they can purchase M1A2 or Leopard 1 A6 or 7 ,but as usual the mafia behind the italian defence industry will win ,and at the end we are going to purchaSE A VERY expensive upgrade ,5 millions of euro, for an already obsolete tank. At the end we can say ,the Ariete it's not a bud tank but forthis price the italian army can purchase samething better .
Always think about what the C1 was about. It was design to counter Russias T-72/80s. Sure it still can't take on modern tanks, but it wasn't designed to do so.
When my father was in iraq, in the italian attack after Nassiriya, he saw militians shooting at the Arietes hundreds of anti-tank missiles and none of them penetrated the armor even if striked from behind. He also told me that he saw simply rpg-7 penetrating and disabling Abrams. He is italian but he doesn't say bs, so...
@@sfigatto_0167 surely it was the "132 brigata ariete" but sincerly i don't know if the vehicle used were ariete tank or centauro. If it's the way you said it's even better because centauro is less armored than ariete.
Armour specifications of the ariete are classified, there is no way for us to know how much protection the frontal hull is capable of, war thunder has made up numbers which do not represent its real capabilities. Regarding the other issues the ariete is currently being updated to its C2 version using technology from the centauro 2 tank hunter. Regarding the armour it is believed to use similar hull armour to the leopard 2A1. Also the ariete AMV pt1 in war thunder isn’t actually supposed to be there as it is the first part of 3 of the ariete C2, it would be like putting a half finished prototype in game but they did so anyway, war thunder doesn’t know many things about the ariete and many other tanks, it’s not a reliable source for specific information.
The Italian Peninsula is shielded by the Alps in the North, and every attacker would have to repeat what the allies achieved in WW2 with the help of the Mafia back then (a less known fact, the Cosa Nostra and Camorra were helping and ensuring a safe landing)! So Italy may thought that they don't need tanks like the easy to attack (from a topographical standpoint) French or German territories! If they had to decide where to invest their budget, I would invest it in the Navy and Airforce, rather than Tanks, especially when there is not as much money to spend! But you are right about the weaknesses!
@@shanerooney7288 Yes and do you know why? (I already wrote it, I think) The Italian Military Procurement of the time around 1980-2000 didn't see a need for heavy armored and with a massive cannon as a big need, and the reason is that only few ways lead to Italy on land, and they are easily destroyed or blocked in a case of an invasion! On top they only have a few kilometers to check because the Swiss was not involved in any of the world wars or would involve themselves in a new one! So what's the biggest need and the most important for Italy, the sea and air, and this is what they looked after and rightfully so! Did it change with NATO Operations around the world? Yes! But even there the Italians didn't involve themselves in all of the wars! Italy needs a capable Navy and Airforce, the Army is also a need, but the borders is giving the highest priority!
So basically the ONE problem with this tank is The lack of armour, i think people immagine tanks as being indestructable but the truth is that armour is overrated
The thing is that in Italy we do need Tanks. Italy is a Peninsula full of difficult terrains, valleys and mountains. Tanks crossing the Alps? unlikely. In fact we have developed fast and mobile wheeled-machines like the Centauro II, which is incredibly good.
Italy is in a dire financial situation and their defense budget does not allow them to afford a C1 upgrade program. The italian military has mostly been a(n) (aero)naval power rather than a land power.

It's a 1986 tank that entered service in 1994 and is still in service unchanged in 2019 :D To be fair it seems the idea was to upgrade it throughout the late '90, the funds required to get the updated design right away were deemed unrealistic. Even then the resulting config was deemed just barely acceptable (if in number of 500 even). Makes the few working ones unchanged in 2019 really seem ridiculous
Well if we are talking about the game then i guess Arjun is pretty bad😂😂 I don't want specs Arjun or Ariete being the sacrificial lamb just to promote a stupid game
The bad armor on Ariete's hull is due to Italy's strategic position. Italy expected to be fighting in the alps in hull down positions with Ariete. The hull armor was sacrificed to save weight and increase the tank's power to weight ratio. After initial teething issues with the powerplant this was achieved. One redeming feature of Ariete is it's excellent gun depression which again was designed for Alpine combat. Even with all the negatives Ariete is still probably superior the upgraded T-55s used by Romania in the type of combat the Italians would be seeing. Plus the tank can easily benefit from NATO allies tank development should war break out. The L44 gun is capable of accepting any NATO 120mm ammunition except that of the British so in a hot war I wouldn't be surprised to see American, German, or French ammo being used if the Italian rounds don't quite cut it. The armor could probably be upgraded both quickly and cheaply with German AMAP armor before a European war actually saw Italian involvement at the front lines. Or they could just use German surplus Leo 2 stock as they have plenty of ex Bundeswehr, and ex Dutch ones in storage unless they've sold them all off to Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Romanians and the Greeks. Not to mention the US has plenty of ex Army and USMC M1A1s around if they need better tanks quick fast and in a hurry.
I'm disappointed with this video. 4:41 "which is pretty good considering the tank weighs 55 tonnes. Which is like 10 tonnes less than its NATO counterparts." This here is why the armor is so bad. It has 10 tonnes less armor. But that doesn't matter because it is 10 tonnes lighter as a result. This is an Italian tank. Italy being the same country that uses 300 of the Centauro with 120mm cannon (to be replaced by 150 Centauro 2, and 150 Freccia EVO Reconnaissance) Italy uses more 120mm armed light weight wheeled vehicles than it uses 120mm armed MBTs. In other words, the Italian military has decided that to meet its needs it has put a priority on light weight over being heavily armored.
Not to be the an asshole but I have to say, if you have taken your data from war thunder I must say that is an idiotic idea because even gaijin staff said that modern tanks datas are really hard to get due to some of that datas to be classified, here our dear friend Ariete is a perfect example because even if the project have been realised in the late 80s the tank is still in service in our army whitout being modified heavily. You said in your video that the Ariete hull is poorly protected and you used war thunder datas to prove your point, now knowing that even gaijin admitted to have difficulty to provide info about the first model of the Abrams (entered in service in 1981) how can you think that datas from a game about a tank still used in 2019 whit classified armor datas can be trustable. Then we have another example, we don't know any major modification of the said tank apart from the PSO modification that have a side armour in game named as composite but lack of specification and can only show a "calculated" protection due to the said material being (surprise) classified. So please before saying certain things that some people take for thrut try to search some info possibly not from a game and more importantly from a game that count balance before realism, thank you . Source of gaijin acquiring data about modern tanks sitem : forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/402669-modern-tank-realism-and-balance/&ct=1575562851
IMO the Ariete is a good platform to build upon. It needs a major upgrade like the Challenger 1 to Challenger 2. But it would be a new tank at the same time. Italy however does not have the money to really put into this tank. If the Italians do this it would be a very formidable tank.
Hey Red Effect, i have an update for you regarding the Ariete, a new variant, Ariete C2 is scheduled to roll out in the close future. It's an upgraded variant with 3rd generation stabilized thermals for both commander and gunner, cameras for the driver and, get this, upgraded protection. What kind of upgraded protect you ask? Appliqué armor packages made in 2002, none of them are for the lower frontal plate btw, so that one is still completely exposed and can still be penned by 30mm autocannons. This is truly an italian moment.
Is it really that bad, or are you going by Warthunder numbers again? The LFP is seriously just a 50mm plate? No COmposites behind that? Why is it so big then? The more I watch these comparison videos, the more I see the Abrams actually being even better. It has a similar design to the Ariete in the hull, but the Abrams LFP is nothing but Composites. It might only be 650, but that is far superior to other tanks, like this Ariete. As for the thin UFP, well, show me a tank that has a configuration similar to an Abrams and show me how thick its UFP is.
Italy has a mountainous spine that connects with the Alps in the north. In WW2, this terrain made it difficult for the Allies but easier for the Germans to defend. Infantry would be critical in this environment, and armour would have to be light enough with infantry support as its main role. Perhaps these factors were part of the design considerations for this tank. I could be wrong, but why not?
Also the driver has a passive night vision sight, also It has advanced Fire control system made by Leonardo, laser warning reciever and Trophy Active protection system, i would recommend more data finding before putting out videos like that
It looks a lot like the Leopard 2000, the German transitional design between Leo 1 and 2. Not surprising since Italy built the OF-40, a near clone of the Leo 1. During the Cold War Italy only had to worry about fighting in the Alps. So a tank that can climb well, has good gun depression and elevation, neutral steer and good reverse speed are good enough. Hull armor is not important to fighting hull down.
Plus the lighter weight gives increased mobility so that Italy can fight a defensive battle using exactly the tactics that Kesselring employed so successfully in WW2. Just in reverse: north-to-south rather then south-to-north. Definitely some shoot-and-scoot doctrine going on here, and in fairness, that's a pretty good way of going about things on the modern battlefield.
This video is totally misinformation. C1 Ariete is classified. You can't do a video about a tank using a bullshit game like war thunder as source. Even the official site contraddict your video specifying that the tank has composite both on hull and turret.
Can you post your sources? I read that hull armour is made up steel and composite, not steel only, the front armour was comparable to leo2A4 (slightly inferior). If it was 50mm equivalent it wouldn't be a 55 ton tank, I dont' think.the engineers would have disregarded the main part of the hull (they obtained experience with Leo 1, M60 and OF-40 projects). The tank was really capable when the first prototype was ready (1986), but it entered in service 10 years later (end of cold war era, budget cut etc.). Today, basically is like having a T-72 or first version of Leo2 still in service.
Simply he took the lower front glacis as being the entire armour, like there's nothing behind it, as in a Leopard I. Using the same logic for the Leopard II, it's armour would be short of 40mm.
I mean come on...the 50mm lower is complete bullshit. It wouldn't weight 55 freaking tons first and second the ammo are stored right there so it would have been really stupid to made it so thin. The armour is classified so we don't really know how it is, we can only estimate.
It's blatantly obvious that you are using War Thunder, a VIDEO GAME, for most of your information on this tank. The C1 Ariete does have composite armour behind the upper and lower frontal plate. Official sources do mention it. Even one of the sources you have linked clearly mentions it, but it seems you didn't read it. The problem is that the effective thickness and the materials used for the composite armour is completely classified, few journalists have had the opportunity to investigate this tank, and no outside country has ever acquired one for their own tests, thus the video game developers that made War Thunder decided not to include it due to the lack of information. I like your content RedEffect, I really do, and don't get me wrong, I acknowledge that this tank does have a ton of flaws, and some people do unfairly criticise you, but you need to do better research for this one my friend.
I've heard some good FCS are made in Italy like the one on a few upgraded Syrian T72s. Apparently it is more accurate than the FCS than the few T90s that they have in service and is nicknamed the T72 "Sniper". It seems that these upgrades weren't applied to the Ariete probably for budget reasons.
Those T72 use the same Galileo FCS that was installed on the T-72M4CZ, the Turms-T. The Ariete uses the base model TURMS. It might get the latest model in a short while, but it did so for more than 20 years, so who knows.
@@wonkagaming8750 The first source linked states that the frontal hull armor is composite, and has an equivalent resistance of 550-650 mm vs. kinetic penetrators and 700mm vs. heat projectiles. the second one estimates it at 470mm vs. kinetic and 780mm vs. heat. Really, he counts only the frontal plate as being ALL the frontal protection, without counting that the space between the front plate and the pilot is full of armor too. Doing the same for the Leopard 2, you should conclude that it has less than 40mm of frontal armor.
@@neutronalchemist3241 frontal plate is from by the lower font plate and upper front plate and the LFP dont have composite and is ony 50MM thich whiles the UFP has compiste but its just space armor and not real composite
Your armour values are suspiciously similar to that of WarThunder, which has notoriously sold the ariete short, the armour values of the Ariette are classified, and i find it hard to believe that the Italians wouldn't use composite armour on their fromt plate. You also forgot that the ariete has spall liners and advanced active protection systems. The lower plate being 50mm is bullshit imo. The armour on this tank is classified so we don't really know how much it is apart from the fact that it has composite armour. It probably has something comparable to the leopard 2a4

War Thunder is not exactly a reliable source, especially as thickness and composition of armour goes. This tank entred in service when the the main competitor was the Leopard 2 A4, and it's pretty comparable for protection, armament fire control etc. Counting only the thickness of the lower front glacis, that of the Leo 2 is short of 40mm. Yes, the Ariete is a very old and probably the worst European tank in service, but the Italy is a coastal state, with some of the highest mountains in Europe on the only land border. For this the Italy is probably the second naval power in nato, with two STOVL carriers and 3 LPD and another one 30.000 tons STOVL in construction
@@RedCardei A new gun, some actual composite add-ons like on the T55am1/2. Thermal and CITV. Remotely operated HMG. Some composite side-skirts and automatic transmission would make it at least ok. Only on War Thunder, because the true data on composite inner armor have never been released. We only know that it is Composite in both the turret and the hull(from the official website of the CIO) but the thickness and material is unknown. 3) Much Weaker gun barrel? It is just an L120/44 built under license by Oto-Melara like the Abrams M1A1/2 and same power of the Leopard 2A4. Keep in mind that the Ariete could also have more powerful ammunition than the Leopard 2A4 even if there are no sources.

I guess the assumptions contained in this video are very serious, knowing that they refer to the indications coming from a video game...the same level when you want to learn the history of the Roman Empire watching Asterix & Obelix cartoons: However, this is reality: it says the italian MBT (now now undergoing an update process) is an efficient machine compared to the average of NATO MBT, not the best but not the worst...especially compared to Leclerc. Moreover, we cannot miss what's happened in Sirya with the complete defeat of Leopard 2 or the problems of Saudi Abrams that catch fire like a zippo... often the theory is far from reality.
@@petrsukenik9266 The first source linked states that the frontal hull armor is composite, and has an equivalent resistance of 550-650 mm vs. kinetic penetrators and 700mm vs. heat projectiles. the second one estimates it at 470mm vs. kinetic and 780mm vs. heat.
Lower plate has no composite armor? Are you sure? Sources? I have a feeling you are basing this video on the informations provided by war thunder models...
All of the italian equipment is good and combat proven and even exported to demanding customers like the Japanese or American army. Italy hasn't needed a better MBT so they stuck with it, the Ariete is a capable machine, his info source is untrustworthy.
I absolutely hate when tank designers forget protection is a key component of all modern MBT’s. Especially when you can combine mobility, firepower and protection into one. It ain’t the glass cannon era of MBT’s anymore.
Exactly, and as the first user who replied to you says. We do not know the data of the internal armor of the Ariete but we only know that it is composite in both the turret and the hull from the official website of the CIO. In the past, Finmeccanica has not released anything and not even the modern Leonardo or the Army General Staff has not released any sources.
you must also consider that the Italian army focuses more on light fast vehicles (very similarly to japan as they both have many mountains) this doesn't excuse the arietes shittiness but it makes more sense when you consider they would focus on things such as the up and coming Centauro 2 and it's variants that will probably replace things like the freccia.

I think tanks should be evaluated globally. The Ariete is an excellent option when you look at maintenance, operativity, mobility and as "integrated" weapon. Not to mention that at the "Task Challenge" on real terrain the italians tanks classified at the fourth rank, just before the USA tanks... ; )

It's a Tank produced in 1990 and never got upgraded till this year. The AMV upgrad project will modernize to a more combat ready level. And it has thermals for both Gunner and Commander.
The Ariete was already born with the thermal sensor for commander and gunner thanks to the TURMS OG-I4 L3 system. It was one of the most digitized tanks of the era (90s). The improvements of the AMV are: 1) 3rd generation optics for commander and gunner. 2) Combined WAR armor and new PSO armor(and not like the old prototype of the PSO used in Iraq 20 years ago). 3) 1500hp engine 4) New transmission and tracks 5) Turret cal. 50 remote 6) APS system(possibly visible in the 3rd prototype of the AMV, otherwise it will be installed in a separate program). 7) GPS and C4 ISTAR capability. 8) New Smoke Grenades. 9) Driver's cameras. 10) 100% electronic turret rotation system(more safety for the crew). 11) Cannon of the Centaur B2(for now only voices from the Forum).

I would like just to point something out:
1- It's true that the tank isn't really up to date, but seeing that Italy has just 1/5 of its borders shared with other countries, and seeing that the land border is covered by really steep mountains that are hardly crossable by large armored formations, does it really matter that much to have a powerful MBT? In such a contest it is far more viable to use nimbre vehicles or shoulder carried ATGMs.
2- Linked to what I was talking above, Italy has developed the B1 Centauro to fulfill the need for a nimble vehicle capable of destroying enemy armor, such a vehicle is far more useful on harsh terrain like the Italian Alps, such vehicles has seen different series, the one currently in service is the B1 Centauro Serie 3 and the B2 Centauro 2 is currently in development, this shows how Italy is much more focused on developing nimble, fast vehicles than Main Battle Tanks
3- Recent wars has showed that the MBT is slowly but steadely falling out of favor, it is possible to see that with the recent Turkish campain in Siria, where their far more capable modernised Leopard 2A4 got destroyed multiple times by militias armed with shoulder launched ATGMs
4- Italy is sort off updating the C1 Ariete, what is known till now is that it will recieved an upgraded engine, whider tracks, new breaks, transmission and turret rotation mechanism. Unfortunately is not known if the WAR addon armor kits will be updated too (for the frontal part of the tank) and if it will still use the addon armor PSO Tipo 2 (for the sides)
Bro, this video was about the tank, not the borders. All of his videos are like that, he's analyzing the tank as a military vehicle.

50mm... I wonder if even some more modern anti-material rifles couldn't penetrate it from close range.
14.5 API mm would do
@@TheTeKuZa there is a big inclination, so I don't think anything less than 20mm can penetrate it. 14.5 API would do it on a 90° angle sure, not on 45.
Doesn't .50 AP have like maximum ~30-40 mm of penetration, and therefore 14.5 should be similiar? Afair .50 APIT has like below 30 mm, im talking about hardened armor plate steel.

Ikhsan fahri pratama It was average among the MBTs that each nation had. But it is very outdated now. Hence why it is in War Thunder the way that it is right now including the PSO package version of the Ariete where it is able to perform in the right hands.

It s stated that the frontal armour of the ariete equals the frontal armour of a T-72B from 1985: 550 mm.

@@shanerooney7288 Yes and do you know why? (I already wrote it, I think)
The Italian Military Procurement of the time around 1980-2000 didn't see a need for heavy armored and with a massive cannon as a big need, and the reason is that only few ways lead to Italy on land, and they are easily destroyed or blocked in a case of an invasion!

Which is like 10 tonnes less than its NATO counterparts."
This here is why the armor is so bad. It has 10 tonnes less armor. But that doesn't matter because it is 10 tonnes lighter as a result.
This is an Italian tank. Italy being the same country that uses 300 of the Centauro with 120mm cannon (to be replaced by 150 Centauro 2, and 150 Freccia EVO Reconnaissance)
Italy uses more 120mm armed light weight wheeled vehicles than it uses 120mm armed MBTs.
I play war thunder, and I can say... It is awesome.
IMO the Ariete is a good platform to build upon. It needs a major upgrade like the Challenger 1 to Challenger 2. But it would be a new tank at the same time. Italy however does not have the money to really put into this tank.
If the Italians do this it would be a very formidable tank.
They currently are. They just finished the AMV pt2.
Now, they have money.
Any video reviewing an actual, machine that starts with an ad for a game featuring said machine has to be invalid.
Absolutely. From where is he getting his references. And judging the requirements of every army by the same stick is bullshit
he got pay to mention war thunder, so he did i see no problem
The Ariete becomes now an update and a big brother the leopard 2A8.
The Centauro 8x8 tank destroyer / wheeled AFV is awesome tho'. This might be the best wheeled tank in the world.
The Ariete is still a capable machine, this guy fucked up.
Also the driver has a passive night vision sight, also It has advanced Fire control system made by Leonardo, laser warning reciever and Trophy Active protection system, i would recommend more data finding before putting out videos like that
Everyone tank engineer after playing war thunder isn't it ?
In this world yes
I love the way you say “APFSDS”

I think tanks should be evaluated globally. The Ariete is an excellent option when you look at maintenance, operativity, mobility and as "integrated" weapon.
Not to mention that at the "Task Challenge" on real terrain the italians tanks classified at the fourth rank, just before the USA tanks... ; )
It looks really good idc what y'all say
And i thought it sucked only in WT.Turns out it’s almost as bad in real life.Imagine having a modern tank that can be frontally penetrated by a T-34/85 or a Panzer IV from WW2.
Simply the author counts the space between the glacis and the pilot as "armour" for the Leo 2 and "not armour" for the Ariete, but nor him nor War Thunder know what those spaces are filled of.
That's worse on the lower glacis than the older British chieftan tanks!
It has composite armor so I don't think so. It can not be penned by a T34/85 just more Russian propaganda.
@@tasman006 Any links maybe?
@@TwixSvK he literally used WT stats
It's a Tank produced in 1990 and never got upgraded till this year. The AMV upgrad project will modernize to a more combat ready level.
And it has thermals for both Gunner and Commander.
The Ariete was already born with the thermal sensor for commander and gunner thanks to the TURMS OG-I4 L3 system.
It was one of the most digitized tanks of the era (90s).
The improvements of the AMV are:
1) 3rd generation optics for commander and gunner.
2) Combined WAR armor and new PSO armor(and not like the old prototype of the PSO used in Iraq 20 years ago).
3) 1500hp engine
4) New transmission and tracks
5) Turret cal. 50 remote
6) APS system(possibly visible in the 3rd prototype of the AMV, otherwise it will be installed in a separate program).
7) GPS and C4 ISTAR capability.
8) New Smoke Grenades.
9) Driver's cameras.
10) 100% electronic turret rotation system(more safety for the crew).
11) Cannon of the Centaur B2(for now only voices from the Forum).
