True, it's not the usual crowd, but it is the second day of the new year, and typically there aren't as many people in the city center on that day! Happy new year!!! 💙

On this walk, I passed by the areas of Plaka, Monastiraki, Ermou Street, and the surrounding alleys, as well as Syntagma Square.

It depends where you are situated but the centre is very clean, there are no homeless, seldom seen. I took a hotel/hostel in a lesser area for a few days during a transport strike, it was not so great, later moved hotel. The older part of Athens along the park and those older streets behind are very interesting and lively, and also up the hill to the Acropolis, there was a lot graffitti but it was an interesting street/hill with a lot of character and art and many cats living there. There was a lovely family restaurant there that included vegetarian meals, which is less available in the city centre. On the other side of the park and that hill street was another street with fine houses, all beautiful and no graffitti. And then down to front of the park again with the restaurants, market tables, antique shops and even singers and musicians at the restaurants. Because of the transport strike at the time I spent weeks in Athens and with only funds to eat each day, but every day walked and explored, even without much funds there is much of interest to see, and art galleries and museums free or not so expensive to enter, and even walks up the mountain to see the wonderful view over the city of Athens. Even though it was some years ago now I still recognise the streets :-) . It is not a bad city at all but it is a centre for where refugees will gravitate to, and before they will journey on towards other places in Europe. Unfortunately they become very impoverished and there are very young girls walking on the streets trying to earn money (in the lesser area) and in the newspaper there it noted many incidents of trafficking gangs being caught by the police. I found my stay there very interesting. :-) .
