  • I refurbished this Nordmende Model 3004 for a friend - I replaced the tubular electrolytics and one tubular (mylar) capacitor, replaced the selenium rectifier with silicon rectifiers/series resistor, replaced several out of tolerance resistors, cleaned switch contacts and controls, etc, re-aligned the AM and FM IF and RF circuits, and cleaned-up the cabinet. This video is a brief demo of it operating on each of the bands.
On the video, I note that I was not sure what the 'FM Automatic/AM Sound' switch was for: it switches the automatic frequency control (AFC) on/off when on FM. I think there was something 'lost in the translation'...

Stunningly beautiful radio. A piece of art as compared to modern junk.

Yes, the simplicity of the mid-century cabinet goes well with the style of the front panel/dial.

Does this radio receiver have only sw and fm ,or also mw-am? Or does this radio have no mw band? What do words "bc" mean? Is it mw? Radio amateour igor belevich from belarus. I love sw and mw bands, especially sw band. I feel sorry that many countries stopped broadcasting on sw and mw bands, even rich and capitalist countries do not broadcast any more on sw and mw bands, unfortunately. Where are you from? Where do you listen to sw and mw radio? In usa? Or in uk? Or in germany? Where do you live? How old are you? I am 40 years old. I am from belarus.

Hello. I live in Canada and am quite a bit older than you(!). This ('export') version of the Nordmende Model 3004 has MW (termed 'Broadcast Band' in North America), covering 550KHz to 1650KHz, and two short wave bands on AM, plus VHF FM, covering 88MHz to 108MHz. The short wave coverage is from 2.5MHz to 7MHz on the 'SW1 band, and from 8MHz to 24MHz on the 'SW2' band. This is the 'export' model, aimed at the North American market. The German ('domestic')/European version had a LW band and only one short wave band.

Hi Gerry, Wonderful job refurbishing this radio! I have the exact same model, which was previously my dad's. We used the FM band daily and it really was superb. However, about a month ago it stopped reliably working and cuts out to a loud screeching sound after a few minutes. I am looking to have it cleaned and repaired and would appreciate your insights or a recommendation to a repair shop in Canada (near Saskatoon would be a plus). Thank you, David.

Hi David, Most likely a capacitor(s) failed, or possibly a tube on its way out. I can ask radio folks I know in your neck of the woods to see if they can help. Send me an email to 'gerrycohara at gmail dot com' if confirm you would like me to do this

Nice Vid Gerry, you ever try connecting it with a CD-player or turntable etc. through one of the input plugs on the back? That would give the sound quality quite a boost in quality compared to the radio signal. 5 pin DIN to RCA or AUX adapter cables are still relatively easy to come by.
    cheers from Germany

Hello. I do have the correct DIN to phono connectors and I did try playing an mp3 player through the phono input and it sounded good. I will try a CD player too. The audio from the FM tuner is excellent. The set is not my own and I plan on returning it to its owner at the weekend. I will be posting an article soon on the refurbishment work on the SPARC museum website that provides details on the AM and FM alignment method. There is already an article there on a Model 3004 I worked on last year, here: eddystoneusergroup.org.uk/Restoration%20projects/Article%20on%20Restoration%20of%20an%20Eddystone%20S870.pdf

I have seen many vintage radios, but this is the first one whose tuning frequency scale goes from right to left.

It is not very common as its ergonomically 'unsound' for most folks. I have come across several where one or more bands have been 'backwards'. One example that I can cite offhand is the Eddystone Model 870 as I am looking at one right now(!). See this article for some photos of it: eddystoneusergroup.org.uk/Restoration%20projects/Article%20on%20Restoration%20of%20an%20Eddystone%20S870.pdf
