    There is always something to learn on your videos. I did not know that the intake should be partially blocked. I have hung squirrel cage furnace fans from the ceiling joists, but was not aware that I was giving up efficiency. Thanks !

      honestly i think it really depends on the motor you're using. my dad has been using a 1HP electric motor bolted to the outside of a blower with a belt and pulley and he has been using that fan as long as i've been alive (over 37 years now) without any obstructions.

    It always tickles me when I see you doing stuff like this ! 😊
    I'm too old and crippled up these days to do much of it but have made many, many good things in the past from stuff other people threw away, I really hate to waste anything !
    Had some neighbors laugh at me sometimes but I had a lot of tools and equipment that worked well, and I didn't spend a ton of money doing it ! They even got to saving broke stuff for me after seeing what I could do with it ! 🙂
    Did I mention that I hate waste ! 😊
    Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

    From rubbish you make usefull tools/devices, very clever :-D
    You remind me of a mate of mine, he is very creative like you.
    He needed a rear wheel bearing remover for a bmw car, most pullers he could afford were rubbish.
    He made one with 1/3rd inch thick plates using an angle grinder and welder, it was bloody heavy and hard as hell, yep it did the job with ease.
    He mentioned it to a local garage that did repairs and they laughed, a week later they broke so many tools trying to remove a stubborn bearing that they asked to borrow my mates diy puller, the bearings had no chance lol.
    You seem much the same, you will make it work :-D

    These things are EVERYWHERE unless you live in an area in the north where the summers aren't hot enough. For guys having an issue finding one...anytime you see someone that scraps metal (at gas station, digging out metal on trash day, or even at a stop light) stop and ask. "if you run across any furnace blowers would you mind texting me and I'll come to wherever you're at and I'll give you $10 for it". At a scrap yard they're not even worth $5. So offer $10, go to him so it doesn't even impact their day.
    If that's too difficult and you still can't get ahold of any... That's laziness and all on you.

    Metal being in high demand makes the ac companies take them to scrap yards. Extra money. I cant imagine anybody here, being there are 3 scrap yards, tossing them. Trucks with trailer drive the streets the day before and garbage day picking everything steel.

    How come squirrel cage blowers are so much better at moving air than box fans?
    Is it that box fans just push whatever air they're in, and squirrels actually gather and scoop extra air to push?
    Or is it just because this is directional? Can you attach a tube to a box fan to push air to a certain spot? Or would it STILL not be as effective?

    Hey man, my Dad and I wired up a garbage find blower fan for my garage, but wired it on the highest speed. What is the best 3 speed switch to use? There's too many options, and I'm just looking for something cheap and effective. Thanks.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only way to get one switch to use all 3 speeds is you need a 4 position rotary switch(OFF, Low, Mid, High). They run $10-20 from China(Ebay-Amazon). You could do it with separate switches: one master on/off power toggle switch and one basic 3 way toggle that gives you the ability to switch between 2 speeds(high and low).

    question : is there a way to wire this opposite or turn the motor around so that it will suck instead of blow ? here's what im looking to do . i have this idea to put this on my work table and ad a filter where the air blows out but create suction instead so i can have it suck my dremel wood carving shavings and dust as i carve . is this idea do able ? ive seen videos where guys use a normal high speed box fan and they put an AC filter on it and it sucks the sawdust while they carve . and some use a shop vac and make a wind tunnel to collect the sawdust . but my idea seems cheap and simple without a lot of extra parts . someone please chime in .

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been years since I've played around with ECM motors. If I recall you need to supply 24vac to some ports and 120vac to the main to trigger it. There are some decent write ups online if I recall. Google "Forum Bench Test ECM Blower Motor" and you should be able to find something.

    Why would you partially block the incoming air? I have a bodged together setup like your first one that was from a woodworking shop. Mine has a motor with pulley and belts though. Should I have my air intake partially blocked as well?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the motor was designed to push air through a AC or heat coil it will be built to compensate for this. It essentially moves less air and doesn't work as hard because the AC/Heat coils are restrictions. If I remove the restrictions more air is allowed to move through the fan and it puts a much higher load on the motor. This motor was so hot it was nearly impossible to touch even after running for a mere 5 minutes before I restricted the flow to match it's rated amperage. It was pulling nearly 50% more power(3amps) that it's rated 2.0amps.

    • @moose64
      @moose64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sixtyfiveford Thanks for the detailed explanation. I guess that's why motor was getting hot. It was used in a framing shop to extract dust. So I guess with no back pressure from all the ducting it causes it to heat up as well. I'll have to semi-block it off and test. Cheers!
