Patrick Swayze was a professionally trained dancer. A lot of Johnny's frustrations teaching Baby to dance were actually Swayze's real-life frustration trying to dance with Jennifer Grey, who had little to no dancing experience prior to shooting this film.

True, but a lot of people get it wrong with their relationship, saying how they hated each other but that's just not the case at all. People even gave her grief that she took his death hard, saying stuff like "you hated each other anyways, why do you care." But really they actually got along very well in Dirty Dancing, however they did not get along in previous movie they were in, I can't remember the name of it. Patrick was a professional and he took the dancing more seriously so it makes sense he would get frustrated, lol. But it didn't mean they hated each other, I think hate is such a strong word.

just came here to say, "nobody puts Baby in a corner."

  • @bettrhalf8006
    @bettrhalf8006 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Baby's character arc is such an excellent and well-centered part of the bigger story. She starts with a good heart but with all the naivete of a wealthy child, and that is why the dancers all distrust and despise her at first - she's like a literal baby stumbling around and every step she takes risks hurting herself but more importantly, the people around her. If she had gone with her upbringing she might have ratted any of them out at any time under the earnest belief that what she was doing was 'right'. I love how the movie tells us who she is on the inside by showing us her reactions to other people making decisions about her for her. Not a word, just a glance or a stiffness or some other indication that she is struggling between the wish to follow her own path and the fear of hurting her parents, who she genuinely, deeply loves and respects. But nobody within the movie world sees those moments. They see a quiet, obedient, protected rich girl, one of dozens that come through every single year and all with the same belief that they are good people and the same underlying attitude that they are *better* people.
That is also what makes the moments between Baby and other characters so intensely interesting. You watch them discovering who she is underneath - but more importantly you watch her discover the same thing. She has never, ever been tested before, and this was a trial by fire. She learned there are good lies and bad truths, she learned that values can be flexible in good ways and bad, she learned that sometimes, doing the right thing is going to hurt you a whole hell of a lot - and she learned that, just like the dancers all knew from the beginning, her *desire* to do good did not protect them from the risk and consequences of harm being the ultimate result.
The scenes between Baby and her dad are excellent, and that scene on the waterfront where she apologizes for lying and calls him out for lying... it's incredible. Just like Baby's scenes where she gives us everything we need to know about her with a look, the man looks straight ahead the entire time and the *only* movement we get is that quiver when she starts to cry. I mean SHIT, I was 10 when this movie came out and I still get teary-eyed watching it now. It says everything about the struggle he is experiencing in reconciling who he thought she was with who he is discovering she is, *and* coming to the realization that what their relationship looks like going forward relies entirely on him, and whether he can reconcile his *own* values - or those he thought he had - with the ones Baby is pulling out and demanding he take a good hard look at.
I'm delighted at how open you both are to watching movies that might not immediately seem like something in your demographic. I'm delighted that your reward for that openness is to experience the surprise of excellent storytelling under all the assumptions that naturally build up around movies such as this. Anyway, don't know if you guys have seen Footloose, but it's another excellent 80s dance movie to give a go if you haven't.

This was filmed in my home state, at Mountain Lake Lodge. Funny stories...
They filmed in October, so they had to spray-paint the changing fall leaves green. That lake-lift scene? It's filmed in a wide shot so you can't see their blue lips from the freezing water. The lake is now little more than a puddle. Every year the lodge holds a Dirty Dancing weekend.
And Dr. Houseman should have given Johnny the check he took back from Robbie for Baby's dance lessons.

One of my favorite movies of all time. RIP Patrick Swayze. He was an incredible dancer irl too. His mom was a dancer and he's professionally trained and it just made this so much better. He had a problem w Jennifer Grey (baby) she was too childish for him while he was teaching her, but in the end it came out so great.

I have the movie and the soundtrack. This is just one of those films that hits on another level. A great story is a great story. No matter the genre.
Romance, moral lessons, not judging a book by it's cover, dancing with some very sexy moves, coming of age...it has so much to offer.
Robbie is the only true villain in this movie. Yet, his being a son of a bitch, it forces a lot of self reflection and tests one's ability to hold on to what one believes in the face of scrutiny with every single main character. There isn't a person who doesn't grow in some way in the main cast. Even the owner who who thinks it is still 1946 and that is what will attract the younger audiences, realizing he was becoming a dinosaur instead of just evolving with the times, starts to have it click when he sees everyone dancing and having a good time. Realizing he was holding onto the past rather than being forward thinking and willing to take a chance on something new.
The music for this movie is wonderful. A great mix of 80's pop with early 60's R&B and Rock n Roll.
And it makes me wish that the saxophone would make a comeback in music. Because it sets off a mood that just is misssd in today's time.

Jennifer Grey is the daughter of Broadway musical theatre legend Joel Grey. He played the Emcee in the stage and movie of Cabaret.
At the end of Dirty Dancing Baby’s mom says that “she gets it from me.” Actress Kelly Bishop was the original Sheila in the long running Broadway musical “A Chorus Line”.
It’s about a group of dancers at an audition . They really need this job and most are struggling to make ends meet. Who will make it? Who will be cut? The movie is awful by the way.
The father in Dirty Dancing is played by theatre actor Jerry Orbach who tap danced and sang as Billy Flynn in the original production of Chicago.

I love this film so much. It is so rewatchable. I love how Baby always knew exactly who and what she was, it was everyone around her that underestimated her or misjudged her, then were surprised when her actions showed them differently. This is also the first movie where the man was the one who was treated like a sl*t by the women around him, and that was not treated like a "good" thing because he is a man (the 80s thrashed that message hard which was so detrimental to men everywhere - you're a man, you must WANT it no-strings attached at all times, right?). Such a solid movie, solid cast. RIP Patrick Swayze. He was a fantastic actor and dancer. I am also sad that Jennifer Grey felt so pressured to conform to beauty standards of the day that she got a nose job. I never saw her in much except Ferris Bueller's Day Off, though I'm sure she did more. She absolutely showed her acting chops in this. I would love to have seen her in more, but I believe Hollywood didn't know what to do with an "unconventionally beautiful" actor back then.

I didn't watch this until a couple of years ago, even though I was around when it came out (and it was a massive phenomenon). I thought there's no way I'd like it. Well, I was wrong. This movie is so good. I regret that I could have watched and loved this movie for over 30 years, but didn't because I judged it as a "chick flick". It is that, sure, but that doesn't mean it's not an absolute classic. This movie is so, so good.
