Tonight i listened to a band from Glasgow, Scotland called Mogwai and their song Helicon1. I found these by searching for similar bands to Oceansize and came across these guys!

i've been lucky enough to see mogwai twice and both times were an out of body experience.

Saw Mogwai in Edinburgh a few years back and they were the loudest band i've ever seen. So good.

You probably mean loudest band you've ever heard! I might have been at the gig you refer to as I'm from Edinburgh and have seen and heard Mogwai play there on numerous occasions and my ears always take a few days to recover.

@colemanoke funny… I just pulled up a few Mogwai live sets looking for one that I was at in Seattle, 2008… because some page on facebook was asking what’s the loudest live show you’d ever been to. I’ve been to hundreds, if not thousands, of metal and hardcore punk shows. Mogwai was hands down the loudest and best live show I’ve ever been to. There were moments when the sound was so thick in the air it became difficult to breathe! And they blew the power out of half the block where the venue is located. They made jokes from the stage as we waited about 45 minutes for the power to come back on.

When they play this live, one of the guitarists and the bass player switch instruments. Mogwai has a deep discography that is still growing. Remurdered is a real belter.

Not sure about the time signature, but can confirm you're pronouncing the name correctly.
Helicon 1 is one of their first songs (featuring on Ten Rapid, a collection of early singles) and is exceptional.
But, they've been churning out belters for over 20yrs now, scoring their first No.1 UK album last year and the standard remains consistently high.
    Recommendations for further listening...
    Mogwai Fear Satan (live version)
    Take Me Somewhere Nice
    Hunted By A Freak
    Glasgow Megasnake
    Travel Is Dangerous
    Friend Of The Night
    Rano Pano
    San Pedro
    Death Rays
    Ritchie Sacramento
    Ceiling Granny
    Pat Stains
    Enjoy!

Agreed, the live version of Satan from Special Moves is unbelievable. I would also add Don't Believe the Fife and Scotland's Shame to your list.

This song is amazing live, but Mogwai always have that one track on each album that just… encapsulates all the beauty and brutality they are capable of. “I love you, I’m going to blow up your school” from The Hawk is Howling; “We’re No Here” from Mr Beast; and one of my absolute personal favorites “You’re Lionel Richie” from Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will.

As a fan of this band for over twenty years, I’d suggest Auto Rock, Take Me Somewhere Nice or Hunted by a Freak.

Dude! Well done, I've just listened to Mogwai on my channel, the whole album Young Team. Totally completely utterly amazing post rock. Try "Mogwai Fears Satan". Don't over-analyse these guys - it's a cosmic explosion of sonic slow builds and wonderful pay offs. Sigur Ros is spot on - these guys invented the genre apparently.

What a great review, it's wonderful to watch your reaction on your first listen, it's my favourite tune and I would recommend going to see them live if you can, don't stand too close to the speakers though!

Great review! Big Mogwai fan and you’d really like “How to be a Werewolf”, “Dracula Family”, “Every Country’s Sun” and last but not least “Mogwai Fear Satan”!
    My personal favorites!

Sigur Ros was a good call, loved it. Wonder what kind of vocals they have.

listen to Judas Priest “sinner” off of the live album unleashed in the east

Originally, the song is played at a slower pace. Sigur Ros, Fleetwood Max or Stairway to heaven have not much to do with it I'm afraid.

Could you do one of these to rufus du sol, innerbloom for me?

Your pronunciation of the name is correct and No, you certainly haven't peaked too soon with this track. It's one of their very early songs so will have picked up more likes than more recent songs simply because it's been out there longer.

Amplifiers first album is as good as the size mate as is Cinematic orchestras first 2 albums. Rainy places make bangers. Most post rock bands are unique and amazing, polvo being my fav.

Hi, I just stumbled upon one of your ABBA-Reactions which I really liked and I cannot help requesting another one. Can you do 'Lovelight' from their Voulez-Vous-Album?

Do love a bit of Mogwai occasionally, have a listen to Ritchie Sacremento or Ceiling Granny ... the first one has vocals too.

Hey, I just got into your music reviews through sigur ros (one of my fav bands) and I enjoyed your reactions to them! I was wondering if you could do Halcyon (Beautiful Days) live by MONO and Earthmover by Have A Nice Life

    • @Jabberwok28

MONO is such a great band. I also recommend Jesu.
