Most Mogwai albums I could take or leave. But this one holds a special place in my heart. I've listened to it so many times alone in the dark with a scotch in my hand. To date, I couldn't tell you when one track ends and the next begins. The perfect music to zone out to.

That’s Iggy Pop speaking on “Punk Rock”. It’s audio taken from him on an episode of Phil Donahue (or some other trash talk show). It’s insanely beautiful.
PS: You should listen to Mr Beast, it’s my favorite Mogwai album.

Christmas Steps is just about my favourite Mogwai song! That's the closest to what you're looking for after Young Team

A couple of the songs on Young Team had vocals, but I think CODY was the first one that the band members sang on

There's never a wrong time to listen to the great Mogwai! Very cool album. Not quite up there with their very best, but still great. My favs on here are Helps both Ways, May nothing but happiness come through your door, and Ex-Cowboy.

Hearing this album was a total revelation for me as far as the sort of juxtaposition between the cinematic emotional nature of the music and the very stripped back organic production. Definitely a situation where you can still see the hand of the author, or authors in this case. I understand this album isn't everybody's favorite, and that's totally fine, but I have to chime in and say it's absolutely always near the top for me. My favorite albums change with the weather, but this album will always have a special place in my heart. Very blissful and moving at points, but also unapologetically somber, sullen, and desolate. The music of Mogwai is so companionable during times of melancholy, but this album in particular really speaks to those times when darker moods move over you like a lead blanket. It's therapeutic, cathartic, while also identifying with the mental and emotional space.

Waaaa!!!! Thanks so much Jim! I'm glad you're going in chronological order through the band's oeuvre, later albums return to a heavier sound.. side 2 picks up.. if you remember the email I sent fretting over which album you should listen to next I was worried most listeners would have trouble sitting through this album, but as I've said I do think some of their better songs are in here so I'm glad we're doing this!

I listened to this album all the way through once, some time ago, but never came back to it. I do quite like it though. I enjoy the deliberate, contemplative sound here.

Love this album, bought it randomly soon after it was released and was blown away. Deafheaven made an incredible cover of "Punk Rock/Cody" tracks, definitely recommend checking it out.

Yeah, you're right, this first side is a long way from the archetypal post-rock that they're known for. Gets a bit noisier on side 2 though, and all the better for it.

    Good evening Jim,
I remember you played this band before but I can’t remember anything of it so I doubt I liked it (enough) then.
I’m not impressed by the first song; a nice way to say I didn’t like it at all.
2nd song: and I’m not impressed by this one either. The music isn’t very fanciful.
3rd song: more of the same and I don’t like it at all. Boring as hell.
4th song: a bit louder this time but I’m still not impressed. It’s still boring. The vocals here give me the creeps.
Well, it seems I know know why I forgot about Mogway. Totally not my kind of music.

You've just about touched on what a lot of fans said about the album when it came out :P it's since risen in general appreciation.. i think it's one of their less rollicking albums, but it was a deliberate move on their part, Christmas Steps on the second side is probably the high point in terms of layered guitar rock.. I've been waiting 18 months for Jim to listen to that one

Still the best Mogwai album for me. Controversial, but young Team was always a bit 'crescendocore' for me (one of the earliest examples tbf). This is just so much more emotional
