- This is my antenna project to building a 40 Meters Horizontal Loop Antenna on top of my roof. After building my Zero Five 27' HOA Inverted L for 80 Meters, a friend of mine W4DOM Dom asked me to why not build an 80 Meter Horizontal Loop Antenna. That's where the idea of building one on my root top came from. Enjoy the video!

Capt. Darren this is an excellent video. The way you stopped and explained why the SWR was changing was a great example of how you anticipate what questions may be on your viewer's minds. Superb job!
These Airholes are very important to drill them in the Housing of Balun Box. . There can't any Rainwater getting inside causing a shot cut. Even the Balun Boxes of my portable EFHW Antennas having 2 Airholes of 4mm ∅ on each Side left and right from the SO239 Connector. I was watching the SWR rising sky high during calling "Cq POTA . . . blah blah" and even pressing the AT-Tune Button didn't solve the Issue. With me this Symptome happened mostly shortly before Sunrise at the lowest Night Temps (Morning Dew) as I was calling ZL and VK Stations on 20m. Learning by doing...HAM Radio is so much fun I can't express how much. Happy Sunday Capt Darren 💯👍🙋♂
Hey Uncle Guenter! Howzit going! Yeah, I'm glad Art W1SWL mentioned it to me to add the weep holes.

Glad you have a horiz loop! W4NDK
Hello Capt Darren. If you switch off NB, you should see that the other station does not splatter. My SunSDR2 is the same and so is my Apache Labs Anan rig but not as noticeable.
Oh ok, thanks for the info with the NB. That's good to know so I won't look like an idiot. Lol
Hi Darren, if your radio has a subreceiver that can use a separate antenna it is fascinating to listen in "stereo". Try it, you will hear stations panning from side to side as propagation changes. I used to have a very low wire a few feet off the ground feeding the subreceiver it was super effective while listening with headphones. Your daughter is very cute, great to see her visiting the shack. 73
Thanks!
I will see if I can receive on 2 frequencies on the SunSDR and give it a try.
@@DarrenN4VFR I meant to use main and sub tuned to the same frequency but with separate antennas, not sure how you have your SDR configured. 73
@@g0fvt I'm on my way home and will see if I can do that on Sunsdr2DX. I know for sure my other radio in Florida USAthw IC7610 can do that.
@@DarrenN4VFR sorry Darren, I forgot that you have two shacks!
Hi Capt Darren, to lower your swr on 80m on your 40m horizontal loop, I suggest you increase its inductance by doubling your 40 m loop wire element connected in parallel mounted 3’ below your original loop. This is what I did with my 40m loop to make it work on 80m. You’ll be amazed how fast it will tune on 80m. By the way, I learned a lot from your videos on Anan which I will use when I get my Anan G-2 in June to compare with my IC-7610, 7300, FTDX101D, DX10 and Flex Radio 6400. 73, Peter VE3NNP
Great idea Peter! I'll have to try that too. Now I need more wire to buy. Hihi I'm still on the fence for the Anan G2 because of future development for remote operations.
Does doubling the loop also allow you to be multiband from 80m to 10m/6m with the same efficiency or better efficiency or does this bring other inconveniences?
What's Up Capt! Glad you drilled the weep holes. BTW, you will find that the Loop SHINES on bands above the design frequencies.... So your 40 will be not a spectacular 40 DX aerial but on 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10M it will get better and better. The Loop will have distinct nulls and lobes as the freq goes up. Moving from a blob shape on 40M to a multi-fingered star shape on 10M. So what I find on mine is that if I can HEAR the station I can work the station. Lastly, trying to force a 40M loop on 80M is not very good if even possible. As you saw, your HF-Auto kind of gaged on that attempt. Also, please put the HF Auto into MANUAL mode when you are using POWER.... that way it will NOT perhaps start an AUTO search for better SWR. Just a precaution to save your LDMOS. So next I also suggest you shoot the SWRs on your new Loop with an antenna analyzer to see what the SWR and the X (Reactance in Ohms) is by band. Let's do a schedule.... Loop to Loop from CT to TX... no problem for me on 10, 12, 15, 17 or 20... and possibly 40. OK? Cheers Art W1SWL...
Good morning Art, Thanks for the tips. I'm on 10 meters right now and pumping 600+ watts on FT8. With regards on 80m I wont try to use it. It did tune to an 80m freq, maybe it was on 75m.
Ok on the setting the HF Auto to Manual so it won't start hunting for a better SWR even if I had the parameters set to 1.50 SWR.
I'm home for 2 days in Texas. Shoot me an email and I'll send you my mobile #. 73's de Capt Darren N4VFR
Your NB is on. That's the reason you are picking what appears to be splatter from up the band.
Ah okay! Thank you.
they are not good for tuning the frequency above its operation, its just how they work. but going up you should be fine.
If it was me I would take out the 1 to 1 and see how it goes brother
Thank you for the videos. On your loop antenna did you consider strain relief for the 14 gauge wire connections to the value. I ended up doing that with my EFHW. 73
YeH, I've got a strain relief attached to my wire element. Thank you. I did it after the fact.
Hello Cap. You probably showed us, but what was the vswr on the loop without any tuning? Tnx for the vids. Vy interesting.
Oh, no I haven't show it and I dont have an antenna analyzer at this QTH anymore.

Yes, I look at it. It's interesting and very portable. Thank you for bringing up the recommendation.
