Too bad you’re in Florida where 79% of all insurance litigation is. Your state legislature has not tackled the problem that has been going on there for years. Hope that your lightning strike is an easy enough claim that you’re able to settle soon with your insurance carrier. If not, it could be tied up for a long time. Good luck.

My tower took a direct lightning hit last May and I am still working with the insurance company to get things replaced. I lost all the computers and network gear. All my antennas on the tower. I also just about all my ham shack radios, tuner, power supply, etc. Working with the insurance company is a learning experience. If you have an questions on my dealings with the insurance company just ask. It will take a while, but you'll get back to normal at some point. 73 de N9JOD

Lightning is Tough ! I am a Licensed Amateur Radio Operator but also worked with Electronics in Arizona for 30 Years. Allot of Field work to include installing equipment on Towers. I have seen Lightning do so unexplained things that cost us Lots of $$ . I hope you get back on the Air and also get your Computer back on line... Thank You

I have a lot of experience with lightning strikes sadly. Lightning protection methods like lightning rods, grounding rods, and lightning arresters are often ineffective for radio towers and the equipment. . Your problem obviously came though the power lines. And possible cable equipment if you have it. I had a very good grounded tower. All the equipment was grounded. Had lighting arrestors, etc. I been struck three time in thirty years. One time I lost everything electrical in the house. Over 10,000 in home theater equipment, 20,000 in ham gear. I how have ham radio insurance. 200 a year covers 20,000 dollars worth gear including computers, software, towers, radios, etc. I feel your pain buddy. Hang in there.

I lived in Florida for 15 years and I've seen two shacks completely destroyed by direct hits and both had lightening protection ground systems. Never under estimate lightening.

Sorry to hear you had damage. Might want to consider two UPS's. Not cheap, but could possiblely help stop the surge with less damage. Run one into the other. I personally would not make a claim on insurance and just eat the loss if possible. Don't want to give them an excuse to drop you or raise your rates even more. Mine just renewed in FL and increased 18%.

Sorry to hear of this, lightning damage is relatively rare on commercial radio sites here in the UK but a bit more commonplace amongst ham radio installations. I appreciate it can be overwhelming trying to diagnose the specific failures after the event. Ii is surprising that companies are replacing or repairing equipment under warranty. Hopefully some hams that have dealt with insurance companies can advise you. 73

Consider adding a Whole House Surge Protector to your mains panel. As you’ve discovered most strikes enter via the utilities. Miles of wires and poles to hit. I don’t recall all the details in your grounding videos, but make sure the mains ground is very well bonded around the outside of the house to you antenna ground rods and entry ground window (trying to encourage more surge current to go around the house rather than through). Run your shack AC, phones, Ethernet, etc. over to your entry ground window and connect them to ground via surge protectors before distribution in the room (doesn’t help your stereo in the living room!) Cadweld one-shots are supposed to be better connections to ground rods than clamps. Finally, how do your Hazer and antenna ground to the tower?

Good evening Captain , sorry to hear about this , but let me tell you a quick story to definitely make you feel better. This was 20yrs ago when I was living at home . A storm just passed and out of nowhere my dad’s tower took a direct hit . It melted part of the rotator , came down the tower into the ground and blew a 4ft hole in my neighbors fence (the ground rods were next to the fence) , went back up out of the ground inside the house blew the faceplate off of a brand new kenwood , fried a new computer , fried a new central air conditioning unit , and fried a new tv ! You should be feeling a bit better now LoL . Lightening is no joke , if I’m not in the shack the antennas and radios are unplugged. Be safe captain we”ll talk soon , 73’ N2JDX

When I watched your videos of the tower installation, I didn't see you bond the tower ground to the service ground for your QTH. I also didn't see you take any readings to determine how good your grounds actually are. If I lived in Florida, I wouldn't consider putting in a ground system without using something like an AEMC Ground Resistance tester to check how good the ground was. You also need to read, understand and be fully compliant with the NEC. Pay particular attention to section 800 - Communications Systems, it specifically calls out amateur and citizens band radio installations. The first thing a sharp insurance adjuster is going to look to see is if you're compliant and if not deny any claim. While you're at it get some anti-climb plates put on your tower before some kid climbs it and falls off and you get sued by their parents. You should also get a copy of the ARRL book Bonding and Grounding for the Radio Amateur by Ward Silver. As I've told many amateurs you don't have a ground system until you've tested it. As I've told many an amateur, when you drive a rod in the ground all you have is a rod in the ground. It doesn't become a ground rod until you've tested it with a ground resistance tester. When I was watching your video, and you were driving the ground rods they went in pretty easy so I'm guessing you have a pretty poor ground. Also where all of you ground connections are very close to the ground don't depend on the type of round clamps you used. The only sure way to connect a ground wire to a ground rod is to cad weld it.

When I was visiting family in the states, we were sitting in the garden (you call it the backyard I think) and there was some sprinkling rain and thunder way off in the distance. But out of nowhere lightning struck a tree about 150-200 metres away from where we were sitting. It was so loud and so bright and I was really glad none of us died, I guess we were far enough away or low enough to the ground that the lightning never hit us. But it scared the hell out of me, I'll never forget the experience. The only other lightning experience I had was when I was doing climate research, and was on a fairly tall hill (small mountain?) setting up some AQ stuff, and my hair stood up on end. I knew what that meant and hit the ground, fortunately no lightning hit near me and then I hauled my arse down the hill and out of the weather.

You can check with an electrician or better a good ham radio tower installer, ,but I believe, the ground straps on the tower or on any installation can not be bent sharp like that.
