    Saw BSP for the first time in Portsmouth April 2013. I had the first three albums but they only made complete sense to me having seen them live. Now they are played all the time in my car, and I have bought 'From the Sea to the Land Beyond' dvd which is stunning. Their constant re-jigging of the setlist night after night reminds me of James (a live favourite of 27 years).

    The Aran Islands are Irish of course, just of the coasts of Clare and Galway, the Irish film 'man of aran' was made by the Irish man Robert Flaherty in 1934, - just to mention that as it seems here the title 'British sea power' and then showing the Aran Islands without any reference to it Ireland seems to try mislead people that this is a British film made in Britain.

We do have an education system but it only works for those who can escape or are capable of rational thought. We also have politicians, but they're the ones who failed. You don`t have to be a twisted, small-minded nationalist to be fond of your country`s navy. It is inevitable that history and war come up in these conversations - the band is called British Sea Power, which doesn`t lead people to talk about rabbits or daisies. And they wrote that wonderful song "Remember Me", a tribute to all good men who have perished in conflict. It`s above party politics and wrangling. Let`s give BSP and the sailors from across the globe a big pat on the back.

    There were no women in the Royal Navy. We are talking about the British Navy - specifically. These sailors didn`t die to preserve "Little Englander politics". On the contrary. They fought on the seas and oceans for democracy and decency, not twisted old nationalism: something the Germans, Italians, and Japanese were into, though. The fruits of their enormous sacrifies are plain in modern Britain - an open, very open, democracy. Visit Pompey and Liverpool and Plymouth, the moving tributes to BSP.

Malta wanted to remain free, and the men of BSP made it happen. Greek independence from fascist rule, where civilians were hanged from streetlamps. Enabled by BSP. Food to starving Britain, supplies to Russia across the wastes. D-Day landings, and victory in the desert. The senior service. Worthy BSP.

    Actually colonialism does come into it i think you will find singapore was nothing but a collection of fishing villages before the britsh spent resources developing it, just look at it everything you see today the roadnetwork, the port itself, the education system all was built upon the british system, without this developement there would be no singapore today. my point was that EVERY nation in history has a dark past but that doesnt discount the positives they brought with them as redundent.

  • @jkino78
    @jkino78 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Singapore is what it is because of it's strategic position as a trading port, colonisation doesn't come into it. The other comparable Empire's were French, Spanish and Portoguese. The Indians were first butchered by the spanish and British. In any case pointing at other wrongs doesn't change anything about what the British did, it's not a competition. It just annoys me to hear "if it wasn't for us you'd be speaking German", it doesn't ever occur to anyone that English is not my native tongue!

    First off, I live in Italy but I'm Irish so I feel entitled to point out certain atrocities. Pointing out other wrongs is a weak defence. Secondly, the topic of the video is "British sea Power". As for Ethiopians I don't think it's anyway relevent, in fact if you knew your history you'd know that it was only with the Italian invasion that slavery was abolished in Ethiopia, if it had been the British you'd probably use it as an example of how they "liberated" the ethiopians from their dictator!

    Democracy is always worth fighting for.The free market?The current brand of capitalism has divided this land economically, socially and geographically; it has created a disparity of wealth not witnessed since the 1920s (the 4th largest); it has disenfranchised the young; ironically (given the topic), it has swept away all the industry that gave us this wealth and the communities that relied upon it, including fishing, shipbuilding, the docks and the merchant navy.Worth fighting (and dying) for?

  • @tuzza688
    @tuzza688 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well the other great empire of the time was Russia, if its a straight up choice between the lesser of two evils i would most definatly have chosen the British, lets remember the Americans were not much better either considering there genocide of the native americans and not forgetting there treatment of the filipinos. As for colonialism i would never endorse it as being completely postive thats far from the truth (it was downright exploitation) but it did have its benifits ( look at singapore).

    you'll pardon me if I don't applaud the navy for helping end something they were a part of for so many years, you'll agree that slavery would have been rather limitedd as trades go if it wasn't for colonisation in the first place (they weren't the only ones but they were front runners!). There's also the fact that while they passed the slavery abolition bill they were actively starving and exiling Irish by the millions (pop. in 1845-8mil/1847 - 1mil), hardly to be applauded

    if you look at medical breakthroughs, despite the wealth of the British empire, they were by no means the front runners when it came to breakthroughs, falling behind the americans, europeans and asians.
