I was on the fence about this one, but watching yellow win the game after starting so far behind just sold me a copy of this game. It looks easy to teach, but the potential for exciting turns seems really high.
This is good to hear, because I am still enjoying the game. It doesn't get played that often, but it does hit the table still and I've enjoyed it every time.
There may be a goof at 40:10 when the blue player discards 1 card to move into a discard 2 space.

Don't know how you make playthroughs so entertaining. Just wanted to get a quick feel for the game and watch 5 or 10 minutes. Ended up watching the whole thing
Honestly, I don't know how this happens either! I'm glad you do find it entertaining though, it seems I have found a rhythm that people find entertaining and informative and I'll keep trying to make it better as time goes on :)
@@JonGetsGames I think it's definitely the rhythm. You're editing really makes it palatable cutting out the down time. Also really enjoy that you try different strategies with different players and only really talk through your thoughts as one person. I think you've nailed the process. Hey Jon, great play through! I noticed that the blue player moved onto a discard two cards hex and only discarded one card at the 40:10 mark. May want to add a note to that spot. Looking forward to getting my hands on this game in the future. Thanks!
Thanks for mentioning it, I actually caught this while editing and added a note. For some reason it seems that didn't make it into the final render and I've added a CC explaining the mistake :)
I thought you could only take a cave tile if you ended movement on an adjacent space.

Great review, question,,,,there is a discard pile, a hand of cards where is the draw pile as mentioned in the rules ? Is the discard pile and the draw pile the same pile?
good game, but why did they make the tile letters so hard to see? Bigger with better contrast would have helped a lot
I have seen another play-through of this game where the players sat on a barrier as a "Blocker". Is this possible? Can it be used as a "spot" like other spots to land on or do you just remove it from the board and stay on your previous spot until it is gone and then move into the next spot with your next card or your next hand????

Do the cards represent a pool of currencies? Like imagine a path of hexes that goes, a (2)Machete hex, a (1)Coin hex then a (1)Machete hex and I have a (1)Coin card and a (3)Machete card, can I split up the "Pool" of 3 Machete power to pay the 2 for the first hex space, pay the coin, then use the "remaining" 1 Machete to move from to the last forest tile?
I believe you have to entirely use a card up before playing a new one.
at 9:39 could you have used 1 yellow card to get a bonus tile?
Yes! I didn't notice that play at all and would have likely done it if I had. Good eyes :)
Is that one of the setups that came with the game? Looks like red player starts with a handicap because he has to run a longer route...
Yes, this is one of the setups in the rulebook with my version of the game.
At 40:10 wouldn't you have to discard 2 cards to move into that space?
You are correct, they should have discarded 2 cards there. There is a note about this in the Klingon subtitles, I do suggest turning those on for all of my videos so that you'll see any corrections that I've already added.
@27:52 you could have bought a card with 3 paddles to use your next turn instead of using your coin to move forward. There are lots of other choices that other players could have done to get them more choice of cards in their respective decks too.
I do try to play these well on video, but I sometimes miss obvious good plays due to focusing on controlling multiple players.

Pretty sure the one time use coin cards are NOT discarded out of the game if you use them as currency, only if you use them to move.
Do you happen to have a timestamp relating to this within the video?
@@JonGetsGames 3:20. You point out the 4 coin Treasure Chest and state that you'll get the 4 coin buying power once and then it's discarded form the game. That's only true if you use it to move, if it's used for gold it's put into discard pile not out of the game. That goes for any one time use card.

I don't think so. The manual makes no mention of such an exception, only one for if you don't actually activate a card.
Here's what it says:
*Special Cards: Items*
These cards are marked by a crossed-out card symbol. Item cards can only be played *once* per game. After an item is used, remove it from the game (put back in the box). Do *not* place it on your discard pile!
*Exception:* If you play an item card without using its function (e.g. to pass a rubble space, or to spend it as 1/2 a coin), place it above the expedition board after you played it, then put it on your discard pile.
Question: the scientist let you draw 1 card and toss 1. My doubts is, Do i have to toss a card or I can decide if I want to?

Well...I think this game will win the Spiel des Jahres next monday. My first pick was Kingdomino, but this looks much more fun.

But I have to agree with you. Despite I never played Kingdomino it looks less fun than this.
Yeah :D Kingdomino now is much more fun if you add the Queendomino tiles :)
Is it possible to be stuck by discarding cards and not being able to have enough money to buy cards to go over difficult terrain in the end?
+Mohammed Al-Ateeqi Since all cards are at lease 1/2 buying power and you start with a few 1-coin travelers I think you'd have to intentionally put yourself in a position to be in trouble like this.
How does this game compare to Clank! since they are both deckbuilders that generate movement, purchasing, and an ability to overcome obstacles? Both look interesting but they seem to be similar in that your deck construction strategy depends on your approach to the obstacles.
El Dorado is a race game where you utilize your deck only for the purpose of reaching that one goal faster than anyone else, Clank! is more a push your luck game where you might want to stay longer in the dungeon to get some more points
Thanks. I know there is a racing element in Clank! but understand what you say about the push-your-luck in that game.
That's the thing. There is not really a racing element in Clank! It's not get to a certain treasure as fast as possible and get out as fast as possible. It's more push your luck, how deep do you want to go? You can win by staying close to the surface and getting out while others get stuck. In El Dorado, it really is a race.
I want to correct your correction. At 3:32, you say in the Klingon subtitles that "The card is only removed if you use the 4 coins for movement. If you use the card as purchasing power then you keep it in your deck". Here's what the English manual says (bold text as in original):
*Special Cards: Items*

So yes, there are times you can use an item without having to remove it from the game, but I'm pretty sure using an item to purchase something is not one of them.

@@JonGetsGames Sorry, but I still don't think it's quite right. You now say that "The card is only removed if you use the icons on it, or as 1/2 a buying power", but 'spend it as 1/2 a coin' is listed as one of the exceptions in the rules.

Not sure about this rule specifically, but I think you placed too many blockades in the map? At both the start and end parts of the map you used with the terrain strips, you should have only used one blockade. As in the rulebook: "When using terrain strips, only place one blockade (at the start side of each strip)"
My copy is entirely in German, so I went off translations which indicated that you put a blockade between every large and small board piece. I have tried to find the official English rules online to check this but the one I found didn't seem to have setup instructions! Sorry I don't seem to be able to clear this up for you.

This game looks quite fun!
It's one of those games where the theme is absolutely forced onto it though, the board doesn't exactly look appealing either - which is why I probably won't be buying it. But having seen your Playthrough, I'd definetly play it if someone else had it. :)
