    for ages, i wanted an instax camera with full manual controls and the ability to use whatever glass i wanted. but such a thing didn't exist and when it finally did it cost way too much. i compromised by picking up a used fuji xe series body and one of their instax square printers. turns out it wasn't a compromise at all. the printer is small enough to fit in the smallest of my camera bags or even in a large pocket and now i can use whatever glass i want and have full control. added bonus, i end up with digital versions of all the images and can reprint duplicates, which is handy for groups and events. as soon as the wide format instax printer finds its way into my grubby little mitts i'll have the option to take either format with me.

    I hope they keep improving the design.
    Eliminating the shutter delay and adding split image focussing would make this the perfect instax mini camera.

    • @zevendj98
      @zevendj98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The shutter delay in my opinion isn't a major problem, but the focusing screen and the coverage surely is, absolutely. I find it super hard to nail focus at f1.4, it's not impossible and you get used to it but it's damn difficult and you never have idea of what's gonna be in frame, you just decide what's gonna be in the center and hope the frame will cooperate.

    I would love a followup video where you discuss:
    1) Metering for Instax film more in-depth (considering the poor meter in the camera & the dynamic range of the film).
    2) If you tried using flash with the camera for low light photography and how feasible that was for you.

    • @edpavez
      @edpavez  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a whole section talking about the flash, but it was too long and my conclusion was: “it’s hard. sometimes I nail it, sometimes I don’t”, so I didn’t feel it was particularly useful information on my end.

    I think you didn't mention the most important thing. The price: 449$. And to be honest that is really a lot for an Instant Camera with a lot of these flaws. But cudos for the idea and hopefully they will continue the project and perhaps refine it with a mark II or mark III and perhaps also lower the price.

    I have it, the Mark II version, and I'd say it's a blast to use.
    It vignettes, the light meter is not so accurate (I use an app to meter or go by instinct and have no problem) but the fact I can use my Nikon lenses adapted and shoot freaking f1.4 on Instax film is astonishing.
    It's pretty expensive and almost for no one, but if you genuinely want to have fun, it's worth it.
    Just my 2 cents.

    The instax format with a decent lens gives such great results. Imagine if Fuji could be bothered to make a GF670 style body that would take instax formats. This camera looks fun, but I feel like an instax mini, square or wide with a real lens hacked on the front and a separate viewfinder has more flexibility.

    I've heard some vintage 35mm zoom lenses can even cover 4x5, I bet they would work great with this! And wouldn't some telephoto adapters help with the coverage?

    • @steveritchie4926
      @steveritchie4926 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the vignetting isn't caused entirely by lack of lens image size - it's mostly caused by the internal shutter diaphragm circle being made too small. Even if you put a 8x10 field lens on this camera, the shutter mechanism would block the light, resulting in significant vignetting. Their teleconvertion further reduces your image quality, and helps slightly - but this isn't a proper fix. I hope they make a version of this camera with a bigger hole for the shutter, then you could use medium and large format lenses. There's a new SL660 camera being made, but instead of making the shutter hole bigger, they forcibly attached a teleconverter onto the body of the camera. This means it is not possible to use the SL660 without your lenses being modified by a non-removable teleconverter.

    • @AveryDelMiller
      @AveryDelMiller 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steveritchie4926 I had no idea! This makes a lot of sense. Do they use this shutter to minimize costs or something? It seems like a pretty big oversight.

    • @steveritchie4926
      @steveritchie4926 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AveryDelMiller I am not sure, I think their heart is in the right place - it seems like a really fun camera. I think it is just a technical oversight. I just wish folks could use larger format lenses without any problems! I do hope they are able to figure out a way to update it. It's challenging getting all those moving parts into the camera body. I'd happily buy a larger size camera if it allowed for a larger shutter opening!

    Want to be the center of attention at the next party, buy an instax wide printer and use your cell phone. Beware though, you'll need lots of film. When you discover that you can upload pics from other sources to your cell and then print them WIDE, you'll be hooked. I have all the instax cameras, and used them until I got the printer. Now they just collect dust.

    It's a shame it doesn't use canon FD - that would get you a wide choice of fully manual lenses (with aperture rings!), and be easier to adapt to other lens mounts. That said, I can get rollei QBM onto EF so it's enough to get me wanting it

    Its a plastic instant film camera. If you want sharp photos, great viewfinder, solid build quality etc...from an instant camera, go spend twice as much for a MINT Intstantkon RF70. Just the fact that this thing has the ability to shoot almost any lens you have is amazing. No instant camera like it. I'll take it since you dont like it :)

    • @Bogaloo1232
      @Bogaloo1232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you mention the RF70 as a camera that takes sharp photos with solid build quality and a good viewfinder when the lens on it is plastic crap with lots of flare and low contrast unless you get it down to f11 or so and the body is flimsy because of the clam design and the viewfinder has very imprecise framing (there’s no parallax compensation). It’s an overpriced camera that calls itself “premium” just as this one.
      If you want a true premium experience with instant film your best bet is to get a custom instant back (Instax or Polaroid integral) for medium format cameras such as the RB/RZ67. Or if you want a more compact option, a modded Polaroid 110B. The price is close to the RF70 and the image quality, camera build and overall experience is orders of magnitude better.
      The reality is that it’s way too expensive and complicated to design and manufacture a truly premium film/instant camera this day and age, we’re better off just reusing old systems/cameras/optics and adapting them for instant formats.
