People skills, yep. Talked to a sub this morning. He was running an auger rig, but doing something outside of it with a pneumatic tool, messing with the bit. No PPE at all. I knew he would be a turkey just by looking at him. Long, gray beard, smoke hanging out of his mouth, perma-scowl on his face. He was an owner-operator, probably because he hated having anyone tell him what to do.
He got pretty angry at me when I asked him to put his stuff on. Said I would have to wait until his son could bring him his hard hat, and I said “ok.”
Son came in truck, parked, and got out with two cowboy hard hats; one for himself and one for pops. Pops put his on, along with his class II vest, and walked up to our supervisor, who was standing next me, and said to him very sarcastically, “good thing I have this hard hat on, I would hate to have a bird shit on my head.” As he walked up, I noticed that the hard hat had the Gadsden Flag with the rattle snake right in the middle of it.
I laughed, and his perma-scowl started to break into a faint grin, but only because he knew that he landed a nice jab on my chin.
The guy is kinda my hero, even though he is kind of like a gopher in the garden I am trying cultivate.
The biggest thing about people skills is to care about serving them, even and especially the ones that bite. It will come across, even if you have some rough edges in your approach.
Spot on about different hats. Some of this stuff gets heavy, and yes, you have to bury it and not let others feel it. Like maybe you just got into a knock-down drag out brawl over something that you KNOW just isn’t right, and then you have to switch it off immediately so that when you go approach a new-hire, you don’t freak him out. And while all of that is going on, you might get a call about an injury while you are trying to address some sketchy wiring that is kind of freaking you out a little bit.
And then you need to just turn it all off as you drive home.
Tip #8...I completely agree. This tip is why I see HSE-Q departments as being a bit conflicting. If possible, an organization should have HSE, Quality, and Operations run in parallel without intersecting in the org structure.

That's all great points about how you speak to workers. Instead of telling them they are doing it wrong, rephrase it as what you can do for them to help them. After all EHS workers are there to protect workers. Also having a good sense of humor and social skills helps. Talk to workers like they are human beings instead of robots.
So true. I always try to ask myself how I want to be addressed and adjust from there. It also helps to have a big respect for people in the trades. We are not on a different and are in fact, on the same team. We all win by getting work done safely.

Great video. I'm currently studying health and safety certificate from NEBOSH through ROSPA in the UK. I thought I could use my experience as a Groundsman. I got diagnosed with hand arm vibration syndrome and as a result need to start a new career. So thanks for the imput.

I went in for an interview for an entirely different position and they wanted me as a safety. That’s how I got into this position.

What an insightful video! Thank you for this. I am retiring from the military soon and I have decided that I will pursue a career in safety. What are your thoughts and tips on reaching out to a company and asking for an internship so I can learn more and understand what I will be walking into?
Also, I will not have the credentials most companies might be looking for. I will only have a BA in business, OSHA10/30 certification, HAZWOPER, forklift certification, lean six sigma green belt certification and logistics management certification. I understand the importance of continuing education, but is this a good start for my path?
I think you should have a pretty good background to go into safety right away. With your experience and training, you are well positioned for a full-time role if that's where you want to start. I'd recommend looking for a company where there will be other safety pros at the same location so you can learn from them as well. That can make a huge difference. Sometimes when you're just starting out if you get placed on your own it can be a rocky start.
That being said, I've worked with some really excellent safety pros who had a military background. They bring a lot to the table! Best of luck in your search!
I have been in all different aspects if construction around all types of equipment. I am thinking of earning a degree in Health and Safety, as it is important to me .
Would you recommend some communication courses when pursuing this career?
Yeah, definetely! I think Columbia Southern's online safety degrees are pretty well known. I personally went to Montana Tech which was in person but was a great degree program as well.
I'm from the UK, looking to pursue masters in Health, Safety and Envrionment Management, do you know if its possible to work internationally in this kinda sector? I'd love to work abroad one day

There's really not a specific age limit. I started in my early 20's.
