Weeding tip from an old timer: Every few days, take 3 minutes to scrape the surface of the soil with a hoe. This will kill most of young weeds and keep them in control.

Don’t feel bad for being young, I’m younger than you are and I’m here. I am doing it for those reasons as well but I also think it’ll be cool for my little brothers (4&6) to help water and learn some fun lessons. I remember being their age and my grandmas garden was the coolest thing in the world, I’d like to pass the feeling on. (Also I know it’s still very much winter but I like to be prepared)

Most important lesson I’ve learned about gardening: research what you plant before buying it. I planted tulips in a container in Texas. TEXAS. They didn’t even last a month. Don’t make my mistakes. Make sure your plants are suited to your zone, it’s the right time of year, what their sun/water/fertilizer needs are, and what pests and diseases to look out for. You’ll be 100% more equipped to take care of your plants

First thing is to not get panicky!!! Panickie??? Spelling police commence :P
You are being smart and methodical! Growing food is not hard... It is hard work and requires care much like being a new parent.. If you are not a parent, welcome to your new veggie babies.
If you are only initially interested in providing sustenance for your family, I would recommend Potatoes, Onion, Beans, and corn. All storable and great for the long haul... Welcome to being self sustaining. You would be smart to focus on these items only if Sars -Cove 2 is your primary concern. Canning is a bit harder but easily doable..If that's too much as SSLFamilyDad mentioned vaccuum seal is the ticket for you! If you grow too much you can always participate in a farm stand or give and bless others with your harvest!!! Hope this little tidbit help ease the concern.. You are not alone!

Fun fact, dandelion, a common weed, is actually edible. The root can be used to make “cowboy coffee,” and the flowers and the leaves are also edible. Mallow weeds are also edible. And you know those big ferns? Turn the fronds upside down during spring-summer (depends on where you live and what type of fern), and you’ll find sori. Rub the sori on stinging nettle rashes and you’ll relieve the sting for about 5 minutes (takes about 30 seconds for the thing to work).

We are planning to have a nice garden in our next home. Presently, I know next to nothing about gardening. For someone like me, with no prior knowledge of gardening, this is a very articulate and nicely done video. Many thanks.

This is a very late reply but if you get a shade cloth or make a shade house, most things will grow happily since the sun is already super intense! Cool weather plants could still suffer from heat, however, so it might be harder to grow then outside.

Turning weeds into nutrients makes use of a resource that would otherwise be thrown away. Whilst you can compost or turn them into a nutrient-rich vinegar mix, I use non-seeded weeds (not sensitive weed) into a mulch. Also, turning your household waste such as cardboard into something you can use in the garden reduces the amount of stuff that goes into landfill whilst reducing costs on perishables and non-perishables for the garden. Just keep in mind that plastic breaks down and accumulates in the eco-system. Get to know the traits of your household waste to know what is useful long-term.
