    The dialog I PRAY makes it to the series:

    "Yes," said Harry, still breathing hard.
    "You're quite sure of that, are you, Potter?"
    "Yes," said Harry, with a touch more defiance.
    "This is the copy of Advanced Potion-Making that you purchased from Flourish and Blotts?"
    "Yes," said Harry firmly.
    "Then why," asked Snape, "does it have the name 'Roonil Wazlib' written inside the front cover?"
    Harry's heart missed a beat. "That's my nickname," he said.

    I really hope they age the characters right. The scene in DH, when Harry uses the resurrection stone to see his parents, didn't hit the same in the movies. It was supposed to reflect how young they were when his parents lost their lives; they were almost the same age! Lily & James being 22 and Harry being 17. But in the movies, his parents looked to be in their 40s. Plus it makes it more understandable how Sirius calls Harry "James" in OotP, because James will forever be young in Sirius' memory 😭 There's so much detail they can include just from casting well!!!

      The age of the age of the acotrs who played James and Lily has wound me up for ages. I forgave it for Snape, Lupin and Sirius because the casting was so good but I don't understand why they cast 40yo for that and Lily still didn't have the same coulour eyes as Daniel!! @asher8754I feel like there are definitely parts of the books which are fownright irresponsible to adapt today. They'd have to change these things or cut them out. The houseelfs for example are integral to the plot, but portraiting the characters behaviour towards them faithfully would either make them utterly unlikeable, or send a very bad message. I feel like the underlying political philosophy of JK's work is something that should be modernised and would actually benefit from the change story wise.
      Making Dumbledore and the Order of Phoenix a more progressive force in the story, i.e. actively believeing in changing a system all of them seem to be aware is descriminatory and outright evil at times, would underline both how evil Voldemord actually is, and maybe more importantly how the blatant conservatism of the ministry of magic made Voldemords come back possible.
      While that would definitely change the neo liberal, extremely individualistic and conservativ philosophy of Rowling, it wouldn't even necessarily go against ehst thr character proclaim to be their values.

      @@user-dc4dd7cm3eeven with reading the books it did not feel like a good fit imo ~ I could see them dating (they spent time around each other and all), but I feel like Harry would have held Ginny back. Harry was more prone to wallowing and needing pushed, whereas Ginny was more about going out and doing things. I think that needing to give Harry the space to recover from his plethora of trauma, needing to take care of him, would have been constricting to Ginny, who had lived her whole life pushing against systems (only girl, youngest child, etc.) and needed someone who was more independent - who she could support, yes, but also who was self-reliant/self-confident enough to do things for themself without placing that signifcant burden on her
      basically (to oversimplify) Ginny had to fight for her place whereas Harry was given his place on a silver platter and had to learn what to do with it, which resulted in them having very different approaches to life.

      Yesss! One of my pet peeves with the movies is that they're dark. Literally. Like everything gets increasingly more gloomy and depressing, yes, but on top of that they've toned up a sort of greyscale filter. I hate it! 😆
      In the books, Harry Potter can be dark at times, but it's a story about kids (and teens). Sometimes you gotta let kids be kids and showcase the magical school they reside in with a positive light. Things aren't doom and gloom 100% of the time. So, the movies kill that whimsy and the mystical feeling of it all.
      Many times the books are really funny, comforting, and make you feel warm and fuzzy, you know? I hope they will make it look that way on screen!

    Several things I want to see from this series.
    1. COLOR! The color palette from the films was so dark and somber. In the books people are wearing bright colors and objects are just as bright. Let Lockhart wear lavender!
    2. Better scale to Hogwarts. Some of the locations, like the Gryffindor common room and the library were so dinky in the movies. Let Hogwarts Legacy guide the scale we can see in live action. We should see groups of students filling large rooms.
    3. More secondary character action. We need all the students to be with us for this adventure. People like Lavender Brown should be there from the beginning, not just when they are needed to be dated. And also, yes, some more diversity at the school, but not necessarily by changing the race of existing characters. Just show off the population of the UK a little more. Have Ginny hanging out with a black and an Asian set of friends in her school year, things like that.
    4. I'm a Hufflepuff, but PLEASE, let Ravenclaw have an eagle as their crest. Then give some Ravenclaw student an excuse to spout off some big brain knowledge about how the raven in Ravenclaw is Old English for black, and therefore the name is actually 'black-claw' and eagles have black claws.

    I think what a lot of people who are forgetting to mention is the amount of hate and abuse the new actors are going to get. Like there’s definitely gonna be a lot of actors who obviously don’t look like the actors who portray the characters in the movies and a lot of people ( who have only seen the movies) only see the characters as the actors in the movies like Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter even if Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t even completely look like how Harry does in the books, for example, his really messy hair which shoots up in the back. It’s just there are so many absolutely amazing British actors in the movies like David Thewlis, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Maggie smith and many many more. A good example of an actress getting an unreasonable amount of hate and abuse is Bella Ramsey who played Ellie in the last of us because some people weren’t happy that she didn’t quite look like Ellie in the game even tho she is still young, so then, put that on an even bigger scale with a franchise like Harry Potter which is already very successful so it’s going to be much worse for the actors and actresses portraying the characters.

    This is long. I have so many mixed feelings. On the one hand, it can make things a lot more book accurate. I have some particulars here:
    1. Snape's worst memory may be more accurate (aka we see him call Lily a mudblood) and we get a good depiction of "The Prince's Tale" (aka seeing Snape brush off Lily's concerns about Avery and Mulciber and embracing the dark arts.)
    2. SPEW/Hermione actually being pretty ruthless
    3. Harry & Young James played by the same actor to show they are identical
    4. Lily and Harry having the same color eyes
    5. Parent! James and Lily actually looking 21 years old instead of looking like they have had 5 kids and a mortgage.
    6. Ron isn't just a sidekick and the "you ask a question, she has an answer, why do you ask a question if you don't want to be told?"
    7. Snape depicted as an actual bad guy
    8. ARIANA DUMBLEDORE'S STORY IS EXPLAINED
    9. Victor Krum being an absolute mess
    10. More detailed story of the Marauders told in book three
    11. Remadora hospital wing scene my beloved
    12.Ginny Weasely being the total snarky and feisty Jock she is, and a book accurate Hinny first kiss
    13. A Book accurate Romione first kiss
    14. Sirius and Remus actually being friends.
    15. Sirius's mother's screaming portrait, also Sirius being a chaotic mess.
    16. Kreacher's tale
    But on the other hand:
    1. No John Williams score
    2. That actually is a deal breaker for me
    3. IDK if I'll ever be able to see anyone else playing Snape other than Alan Rickman.
    4. It lowkey feels like they're beating a dead horse. I'm worried it's going to be more like a cash grab and they won't take enough care to do it well
    5. did I mention no John Williams score? Because I need Hedwig's theme and "window to the past"

    Okay, this so perfectly sums up my own reaction to this. My brightest hope is that the show is an aggressively original adaptation that does things the films didn't. Heck, hopefully they'll do things that the books didn't manage. With an entire season per book, they have hours and hours to play with, especially with other characters. We can explore Ron's conflicting jealousy and loyalty, Hermione's perspective through everything, Snape, Luna, Draco, Dobby, Dumbledore, and so much more.
    Not the spiders in the Forest, though. Seriously, no. Just no. Dear God, no.

    I feel like WB learned the wrong lesson from the Fantastic Beasts movies. Instead of hearing any criticism of the writing, they decided "familiar is better than new" and are going back to the deepest, easiest well they have: the original books. And now instead of bothering to "adapt" anything to screen, they'll just take exactly what happened in the books and film it (see: Disney live action remakes of animated classics). And because JK wrote the books, of course she should write the TV series because that's basically the same thing, right? /s

    My biggest hope is that they will do Half-blood Prince justice. IMO, that was the weakest film in the series due to artistic liberties of highlighting the teen angst drama and cutting out the core elements and themes that made it the calm before the storm on the horizon that made it, to me, be the strongest book in the series.
    The lead up to Harry kissing Ginny was so much better in the book, when I first read that part I held the book away reacting like one of the background characters in the Supahotfire rap battle video. The build up of Harry (and us) having no clue whatsoever to how the quiditch match went, and him seeing Ginny with the snitch and the that leading up to the kiss is what made that sequence so solid, because for once I felt invested in quiditch as opposed to it just happening in the other books.
    The way they had Quiditch actually have a centerpiece kind of role, Harry having to balance captain's duties while trying to figure out what Malloy was up to when nobody believed him.
    The way the Diagon Alley sequences were changed for the worse imo in the movie, even managing to ruin what the room of requirement looked like.
    If they can remedy things like that and include other great scenes cut out, that would be amazing.
    To me it will be bittersweet simply because the original casting was spectacularly well done, and I would have preferred to see all of that with the original actors.

    Personally, the biggest heartbreak for me when this was officially announced was the aspect of replacement. The original series was huge, and it's what made Harry Potter so popular. So realistically speaking there's no way anything's ever going to "replace" that. However, there's that lingering feeling in the back of my mind that I can't shake off. And also, being real here, no matter how hard I try I cannot imagine anyone else playing Harry on screen. To me Daniel Radcliffe will always be Harry Potter, and I just can't see anyone else as that character; the same goes for Ron, Hermoine, Hagrid, Snape, Moody, and every other actor who's played all these different characters that I've grown up with and love to death. I do hope that this is at least a solid adaptation, but man, it hurts part of me sometimes that it's even happening at all.

    Harry Potter is already diverse, if you read the books you’d know that. They don’t need to race swap characters like Hermione or Luna. That will drive fans away and show they aren’t actually interested in staying true to the books. Just elevate the TONS of diverse characters that already exist and weren’t (or very little) in the movies. Lee Jordan, Angela Johnson, Dean Thomas, Cho Chang, the list goes on and on.

    • @hannahvw8759
      @hannahvw8759 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      But isn’t it strange that just because for many of the main characters no ‘race’ is mentioned in the books (either explicitly or by association to character names), the movies decided those characters must be white? It makes sense that happened given the context of the early 2000s, but now there can be more reflection on that I think? And what about diversity in terms of gender expression?

    • @sanaa94b17
      @sanaa94b17 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      I agree. I think there's definitely scope to elevate the relevance of the non-white characters in this adaptation rather than race swapping. Lee Jordan was the twins' best friend in the books and Angelina dated Fred and was Harry's quidditch captain after Oliver Wood just to give an example of how you could easily miss their relevance in the og adaptation. Also i loved their characters in the books. JK also mentioned before that she had a lot more background for Dean Thomas in her head than what made it to the page so I'd love to possibly see him more too. Also, the friendship between Lavender Brown and Parvati! I know Hermione seems to not get on that well with them, but I think it would be good to include that background female best friendship to show that, yes, Hermione also has roommates!

    Oh, there are so many things I'd like to see adapted on screen:
    * Dumbledore talking about his scar that is a perfect map of the London underground right above his knee
    * Harry being sassy with Dudley with all those creative insults
    * Vernon throwing Harry and Dudley out of the kitchen with the scruffs of their necks
    * Hagrid bewitching the boat to make it go faster
    * Ron explaining the wizarding world - I remember him being amazed that people in muggle photographs don't move at all
    * Dudley's tongue swelling like a python
    * The Quidditch world cup
    * Harry and Cho's disastrous date
    * Kreacher's tale
    * Mrs. Figg and her cats
    * Ginny strangling the roosters
    * Harry and Dumbledore's conversation after Sirius's death
    * Trelawney letting it slip to Harry who overheard her interview with Dumbledore
    and so much more..

    I still feel conflicted. Because like you said, it feels like we're outgrowing them. :( There's still the nostalgia when I rewatch the movies. Always gonna be there. But I can only hope they give justice to this new adaptation. :")

    I really hope to see:
    1) All Weasley family members.
    2) More personality for everyone;
    3) Same actors, and not recast whenever a background character comes to the fore (Lavender, Quidditch player, classmates);
    4) The stories of Bill and Fleur as well as Tonks and Lupins, I missed them a lot.
    5) Bullying Hermione in the 4th book about Rita's accusations and her revenge. It was very impressive how she used that : With help of Luna's father she gave Harry a platform to tell people about the night Cedric died, which nobody believed. He was hated a lot more in the books, which I don't think was hinted at enough in the movies. I was the same age when I read the books and I wondered how one could endure so much hate. Umbridge's torment also felt like a lot more pain.
    6) I agree because of diversity. This is supposed to be a different story, a few background characters who said a good word, if at all, are not enough. I would like to see different looking people (and it is not only about race, they should just stop being "beautiful" in this average way of movies. Hermione was not beautiful in the books so it should also be shown. I would like to see what you see in real life in the UK.
    7) Expanding the story so that we're not just looking through Harry's perspective. There's a lot of place and time to create something new that won't contradict the main story, but will complement it.
    8) Correct age and more personality for Marauders.
    9) It would be great to see that everyone has a life and it's not only about Harry.
    Unfortunately, the movies after the 4th were a disappointment for me, I only watched them twice compared to the first three. The 2nd time to see that my mind hasn't changed. I hope I get what I've been hoping for for a long time.

      Umbridge tormented him for hours , days , weeks and months with that bleeding quill ... even half of Harry's suffering wasn't shown in the movies; even Gryffindors started turning on him .

    I think when you spoke of those of us who grew up when the movies and books were coming out, you perfectly described why I don’t want this to happen. While I would love to see the events that didn’t take place in the movies happen, this is just a smack in the face that I’m no longer a kid. Those times are gone. You’re right, it hurts like crazy to be older than your favorite characters, especially a significant amount, when those were the ones you grew up with. It shows you just how much time has passed. It’s also hard because those movies are so special to me, and I don’t like feeling like they could be overshadowed, or that they’ll no longer be as special because of this series.

    I have mixed feelings about the reboot but I guess if they add some of the proper book details I can consider watching it. For instance...
    1.Lily and James to be very young when they died.
    2.Lily and Harry both have green eyes.
    3. For Hermione to not be the only brain of the group as Ron had large amounts of common sense and Harry was also rather intelligent and had superb instincts.
    4.Dumbledore to be clam and have a mystical personality.
    5. Dumbledore to explain Harry the flaw in his plan properly.
    6. Harry's total badass retorts "No need to call me Sir,Professor."
    7. Ginny to be a total bad bitch like in the books.
    8. Harry and Ron's relation to be profound and their friendship expressed properly ( he was Harry's total bestie after all)
    9. Hermione to catch Rita Skeeter in a jar.
    10. People actually never taking Voldemort's name and being hella scared to do so.
    11. Voldemort to be actually kinda scary instead of noseless and a bit of a joke.
    12. Hermione to be a hardcore,nasty genius instead of just a nerdy bookworm
    13. AND YES Harry breaking everything in Dumbledore's office after Sirius's death.
    14. The last duel between Voldemort and Harry to be in the great hall with the proper explanation and the exact depiction as in the book!!
    This can go on forever😂 but for these are the main things I just NEED in the reboot!!

      I really hope they don't make Ginny the flawless form of JK wish fulfillment they did in the books. JK beat us over the head with how pretty and smart and funny (even though she just told us and never showed us) and talented and perfect she is. Thats not good writing or a good character

    for all the people saying they want a marauders story, it’s a terrible idea, their time at school was super anticlimactic for a whole tv show and all the crazy stuff happened after their school years, it would literally just be a high school drama

    I appreciate your adaptation example. While they were cast differently, they were still cast being faithful to the original material. The race of said characters did not change, nor was the gender.

    If they announce a live action remake the fandom is gonna be in for a rough awakening, the movies are incredible adaptations, music, cinematography, scenery, direction (I mean Cuaron even did one of them). Just because they cut plot points not essential to the main story to fit in screen time doesn't mean they don't retain the core heart of the series and of most characters, it will be MUUUCH worse with reduced TV budget, forget good scenery and casting (Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith,etc)

    My feelings are very similar to how you described it. I’m upset that not much time has passed since the original movies were finished and they’re just making this show and even though they aren’t, it feels like they’re trying to replace what I grew up with. However, I also agree with us being able to get a more in-depth story and more accurate to what the books were and have that come to life on screen. It’s just a bunch of mixed emotions and I won’t know how I feel til it comes out.

      Update; it's gonna be trash probably cause they just released the initial casting and they're doing what everyone was hoping they wouldn't; they diversified the casting to get woke points about a show based in the late 90s in London. Oii.

    Surprised to see a full length video after watching your great shorts for months. Was not expecting such a insightful video essay on nostalgia. Loved it!
    As something who also grew up alongside the characters and use to read the books with my father, trading chapters, (embarrassed to say we continued to do this into my high school years).
    I look forward to a remake/reboot. I was not part of any greater fanbase in those days and so never got to share my thoughts and feelings about the books, and eventually the movies, with anyone.
    I see it, and in a way I hope they market and create it in a way to please the aging fanbase. My little sisters do not care about Harry Potter for example and it would give older fans, like me, another great path of entry into a fanbase I have always kind of skirted around. (Not that I couldn't have found excuses to before but lets admit it after Cursed Child I wasn't really itching to finally jump onto the bandwagon.)

    Same girl same! Fellow Ravenclaw here. I was 12 when the first movie came out and 15 when the 5th book came out ect. It was an a amazing time to be a book reader/fantasy nerd and to get to grow up with the actors and the characthers through the book releases. First of all, thank you for adding subtitles to your video because my natural language is spanish and I'm still perfectioning my english, it's good but it's not 100% perfect yet.
    Second, I left a little opinion about this topic in the question box on your instagram yesterday but it couldn't show my full opinion about this, so thank you again for making this video and I will write my full opinion here: I don't think this was the best move for Warner Bros, I would really have like much more an expansion of the stories we already have from the big screen to the streaming platforms like the origins of Voldemort or a story about the Marauders when they were students but coming back to this new series, my biggest issue and I think a lot of people is having this issue too is that we have been watching the movies for so many years, actually I was 9 when I watched The Deathly Hallows for the first time back in 2011 and now I'm 21 and we are so used to the actors playing their characters that it feels weird to see other actors playing Harry, Ron, Hermione, etc; Now don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting this series to be a disaster, I sincerely hope it will be a good adaptation and its biggest advantage is that it will show a lot of stuff from the books that we couldn't watch in the movies for obvious time reasons, so let's cross our fingers. I'm sorry this opinion was extremely long but I wanted to be clear and direct about this news, hope to see you soon in youtube and I'll be expecting more new videos on instagram, bye❤😊

    The stories we didn’t get, the characters that were done dirty, and the potential to make magic even more magical with advancements in SFX and digital art give me hope for this next adaptation. I think, done well, this could be a case of Pride and Prejudice. Both the 90’s and the 00’s adaptations are fantastic! Some prefer one over the other for their own reasons but, over all, all can agree that both versions were a credit to the genre and title. If lessons have been learned by WB and whoever will be at the helm of this next adventure then I believe we can all have hope. If what came before had to walk so that the next generation can fly then the next generation could be a rocket ship because of how sturdily the OG strided. And if nothing else- at least it wasn’t Cursed Child 🤣

    I am waiting for the Ender's Game series adaptation. I was extremely underwhelmed with the movie. Not that the movie was bad, it just felt rushed and story compressed and not properly developed. 3 hours is not nearly enough time, and a multi-hour seies could capture that much better.
