- Hilsa, a marine species, migrates to estuaries and inland water for spawning purposes. Unless it gets favorable water conditions for resting and breeding, it will choose a different course. In West Bengal, the production of the fish in the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system, the main breeding ground of the fish, has dropped from 60,000 tonnes in 2010-11 to 20,000 tonnes in 2011-12 and 10,000 tonnes 2012-13.
The Hilsa price in West Bengal is now skyrocketing. More than 70 percent of the catch weighs 500 gm or less, a sure recipe for disaster from a conservation point of view.
Only in April this year did the West Bengal Government come out with certain notifications restricting irresponsible and unsustainable harvesting of the fish.
Creating awareness about the need for maintaining restraint in certain months of the year is critically important. But supply management is not enough. Equally important is demand management, i.e., persuading Ilish lovers to refrain from buying any fish that weighs 500 gm or less.

We called it's as pulsa in Andhra Pradesh Godavari area it's very famous and tastey fish it only available in rainy season it's cost approximately 3000 to 7000 some times 10000 more
Hilsha will not be history only because of Bangladesh. Bangladesh government has been doing many things for the fish. As a result quantity of hilsha caught in Bangladesh has potentially been increased in recent year.

Once hilsa use to call poor peoples fish now it's almost out of reach of middle class. I had seen when I was a little kid lot of this fish would get rotten in the market due to lack of customers. Those days peoples use to buy hilsa once or twice a month in order to change the taste. It was the cheapest fish in Bangladesh. Who is to blame? I believe we are to be blamed for not taking of the nature other than us. Some peoples like to put everything on the shoulder of GOD. What a sad story!! What a bunch of headless chicken

Catching of fish during rainy season should be banned for at least 2 years by this process the fish can be restored.

If you have to stop fishing for hilsa for at least 2 years, then you don't have to worry about hilsa for the next 20 years.
The authority must look How the Bangla government does, they ban fishing for 4 month and gov. Pay some compensation to the poor fisher man thus to help to breed the hilsa fish. Same pattern must be followed in W. Bengal gov.

The common excuse of catching khoka or small hilsa from the fishermen and women is that when they have spent an whole day in the hot sun and caught nothing but a single or two hilsa how could they let go of it because they have a family to feed too. The only solution is I guess artificial breeding of the fish.... Or thickening of the holes in the net's...

কাউকে বলে ছোট মাছ ধরা বিক্রি কেনা আট কানো যাবে না ।এর জন্য চাই কঠোর আইনের শাসন। ছোট ফা৺স জালে ধরলে দু'বছর জেল, ছোট মাছ বিক্রি করলে কমপক্ষে দুই বছরের জেল, যার কিনবে তাদের ও দু বছর জেলে। দেখবেন ছোট মাছ ধরা বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে। অনুরোধ উপরোধে কিছু হবে না। কিন্তু এই কোন সরকার করবে না।তাই যেমন চলছে সে রকম চলবে।
