I'll be getting my first pointer in less than a month, these videos are really helping me devise a plan to training my pup (German Wirehaired Pointer).

We have never used a leash on our vizsla since we got him at ten weeks old. He sticks to us like velcro and listens always. We are very grateful for his outstanding natural temperament. We are starting hunting training now.

Thanks for this. I’m getting a Vizsla and I’m trying to get as much information as possible especially in relation to separation anxiety

nice work here although I had some of the knowledge great beginner video as these two items are huge. I had to come back to whoa after bad winter on my pup and thi exercise in one dy had her locked again. as for rertiving, the hallway trick I found out late and our biggest issue to date . a lot of grandstanding and the hallway did it !

Had viszlas for many years and never had to teach any of them to point, it was just in their nature. Also had a GSP 10 months old rescue dog and he became a killing machine and never told me a lie. Staying to flush was the only thing to be taught in my view.

good video, but a pet peeve of mine:
Positive reinforcement= adding something pleasant to encourage a behaviour.
Negative reinforcement=removing something unpleasant to encourage a behaviour.
Positive punishment=adding something unpleasant to discourage a behaviour. Negative punishment=removing something pleasant to discourage a behaviour.
    Terminology is important.

      Nick,
Thanks for the feedback. Since this video was shot, we have learned these exact terms. We have begun to work with the University of Illinois, guest speaking mostly, and they let us know these definitions as well. We have since changed our use of these terms.

How did you get that pup to come back on the whistle

At 1:37 you state you use negative reinforcement by applying pressure when he wiggles to teach him that wiggling will not result in positive reinforcement. However, what you have described is positive punishment. You added something- the pressure (positive) and you hope this will decrease future occurrences of the wiggling behavior (punishment). Negative reinforcement is taking something away to increase the future probability of the behavior. If you’re going to use behavior principles at least use them correctly. What you are teaching just makes it more difficult for those of us who are behavior analysts or who do understand principles of operant behavior to properly inform others how these principles actually work with organisms in the environment.

Thank you for the comment. I admit, at the time this video was recorded there was confusion of terms. Since then we have learned the correct terminology and teach it throughout our sessions. The video is not removed because the techniques are great, although the language is not.

You just "found" that website, huh?
If you were affiliated with it I'd call that the self serving lie of a dishonest piece of filth. Since you just "found" it though I guess you're fine.

My German shorthaired pointer just eats the bird and doesn't retrieve or point. Any help guys

    • @GASC60962
      @GASC60962  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Riley, thanks for the comment! Your dog mouthing/eating and not retrieving the bird is a trait we often see in pointing dog breeds. To fix your problem your dog will need to be taught a "conditioned retrieve" through force fetch. We would love to help you out and can do so through sessions or by your enrolling your dog in the Gun Dog Success program, please email info@huntgreenacres.com or call us at (217) 395-2588 for more information. Over the next year we will be producing several videos of different stages of training, stayed tuned!
