    Zoot suits and the Pachucos in general both originated from El Paso "Chuco" Texas! It isn't a style invented in either Los Angeles nor borrowed from African American culture as suggested by this reporter. With regard to African Americans, it's very likely the reporter Michelle Valles is getting her info from a 2016 Smithsonian Magazine article which credited the style as coming out of Harlem (NYC) in the 1930s - 10 years before the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots in LA. In reality, the Pachucos were wearing zoot suits in El Paso, TX & Juarez, MX in the "1920s"!! From the U.S. Mexico border at El Paso /Juarez (aka "La Frontera") it spread out to both coasts via L.A. & NYC and onward from there... ( ref. source: Mexican American News 1989 )

      @Bely Silva-Torres Tin Tan was born in Mexico City but raised in Juarez (next to El 'Chuco' Paso; i.e. the first Pachucos). Also, his first movie was in 1944 which was well after the 1920s when the first zoot suits appeared in El Paso/Juarez (La Frontera).

    I wish these chicanos would research their Los Angeles History. Chicanos did not wear hats with the huge feather...come on now!!! Most L.A. Chicanos did not have beards as part of the get up....it was the oversized pants, jackets and double sole shoes that were worn. The generic concept of what Pachucos wore is totally misrepresented. My dad was part of the sleepy lagoon insodent...he shared many hours along with his brother depicting what really happened. It's embarrassing watching the now chicanos get up and dress as to what they think the pachuco was about....WRONG.....The hats with the fearthers was a Harlem thing incorporated by New York blacks....People, if you are going to represent our history, know your stuff...read a frickin book about L.A. chicanos in the late 30's and 40's....please...

Its obvious to me me that based on your comments, you don't know what you're talking about. If you bothered to research the origin of the style and dress, you'd realize that you have been so misinformed about Chicanos and the styles associated with clothing and why society frowned upon us for the radical apparel. I have no idea who you are or your level of knowledge on this subject however; I would suggest that you consider an objective approach when understanding your roots. Dios Mio!

    Its very interesting how society glorifies Zoot Suits today. In the early 1940s, the United States government mandated a ration for the War effort. The categories of rationed foods during the War were sugar, coffee, processed foods (canned, frozen, etc.), meats and canned fish, and cheese, canned milk, and fats. Furthermore, shortly after Pearl Harbor, there was a heavy burden on US supplies of basic materials like metal, rubber, paper, shoes, and ESPECIALLY garments . Minimal used clothing was mandatory throughout the United States, but some Mexicans decided to defy the rules set forth, wear excessive clothing , and because they didn't enlist in the Services, it pissed Americans off ! Today we look at these people as some sort of Heroes . The men that fought in the War were the TRUE HEROES !

    What I could remember from my history classes is there was concern about fabric resources for the war effort becoming limited, considering a zoot suit uses a lot of material.
    Same had to be done with food, making sure that between the war and the people state side had food required a standard of rationing.

    • @sheleavitt06
      @sheleavitt06 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Rationing was just an excuse for racist to be racist and go to war with teenagers that white Americans didn’t see as American. Racism is never a good look but the zoot suit sure is.

Try being discriminated against, not let in to restaurants, getting cheated on your paychecks, all for being mexica or plain hispanic. Yea sure, the zoot suits, yea, that's what defied efforts lol
