I felt the same about optical illusions, but dang it Jazza, you made me like it! The key is that you are being simply YOU. It’s what everyone is connecting to; your excitement and enthusiasm for art and sharing it with your unique and quirky personality, no matter the topic, that’s the best content ever. If you still miss the feeling of smudging with your fingers, but want to avoid the oil from them going into the drawing, then a really cheap trick is to cut of the fingers on a latex glove and wear those offcuts. I used to do that a lot when I was younger, both before and after learning about blending stubs, and really liked the result. :)
Also personally I use both ends of the blending stubs at the same time. That way one end is the ‘cleaner’ end for highlights or low pigment blending, and the other end is a more heavily pigmented end(not cleaned) for darker tones, softer shadows without pencil lines and direct use without pre drawing with a pencil.
Not that I think there is a right or wrong way of blending or using blending stubs, but as you’ve said ”we all learn differently”, and i just really wanted to share my approach 😁

I've never been an artist, per se, but in high school we could substitute design and drafting for art requirements. I fell in love with the precision of the work we did. One of the best classes I took was a 3D projection class. It was basically taking a XYZ draft of an object, and then projecting it into a faux-3D space by perspective drawing, and vice versa. This was back in the early 90's. Even at the time, there was computer software capable of doing this very thing, but learning how to interpret 2D content into 3D space, and vice versa (even if mentally) was a good skill, which has helped me in life. Even though I don't do work related to CAD, or art, simple projects around the home can require flattening 3D space into 2D plans, or imagining 2D plans projected into 3D space.

I "dabbled" in 3D art for a while, discovered that surfaces directly against the paper should be their true shape (for example, a circular "hole" shape in the paper SHOULD be drawn as a true circle). The reason being that it will always accurately follow the perspective that the paper is on.

Jazza just a small tip that you may not know with blending stumps is use tiny circles over and over again to get a really smooth shading effect

My way to do this kind of drawing is by setup the camera angle first and attach it to the monitor. Then I plestered my paper on the table so it won't move. After it, I can draw on the paper but keep in track with what I drawing by seeing the monitor.

Jazza: “...I think mainly because in real life we have depth perception...”
I don’t have depth perception 😢. I have Amblyopia and Esotropia Strabismus in my left eye (meaning my eye looks inward) so my brain takes most of the input it gets from my right eye and peripheral from my left but it suppresses most of the input it gets from my left eye. As a result my left eye is weaker than my right. I may try to do another Strabismus surgery (I had two when I was a little because as a baby my right eye also crossed) at some point which would hopefully straighten my left eye however it wouldn’t change my eye sight. Some people have had success with vision therapy yet there isn’t a vision therapy eye doctor near enough to me. When I close my left eye, everything is pretty much the same except I lose the peripheral from the left.

At school like 1 or 2 years ago we got to draw lots of illusions. A 3D ball, a 3D hand, a triangle illusion thing and a staircase illusion.
    I still have them actually
