So sad to hear about Marty & Nancy. Thank you Marty for all the years of motocross that you have given us!!! Went to all the USGP's in Carlsbad. Those were the good old days. May you both rest in peace. Many heart felt blessings to your families. Love Donna & David

Professional golfers say Tiger Woods is the reason the game is so popular, there are many marketing partners, and there is a bigger green pie for more people to eat from. This from a game that already had the likes of Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, and others.
There was no one before Marty Smith. He defined the sport, was a model multi-time Champion, teen idol, sold millions of motorcycles for Honda and everyone else with speed, humility, and style.
Any conversation about the foundation, popularity, and dominance of American Motocross could not leave his name absent in the discussion. Marty Smith is Legend.

First interview i've seen of my child hood hero. MS was a fast SOB. Hannah really pushed him. Man, those were the great o'l days. Amazing how fast they were for such crappy suspension.

I guess you know you're getting old when this stuff doesn't look old school. Seems like only a year or two ago

I was at this race, as well as all of the first 16 Los Angeles Supercross events. In this race Zdenek Velky hit the deck real hard; Marty Smith went over the bars on the first turn, and was out for the race. Jimmy Weinert crashed hard, but was still in the hunt. I recall Roger DeCoster and Heiki Mikkola showing up for the gate money, but only doing one lap before pulling off. That 30K purse was HUGE in those days motocross. Motocross just seemed to be so much more fun in those days.

Yea, I remember when u could actually make a LIVING racing professional Motocross - NOW the AMA (worthless) and the greedy fucking PROMOTERS are the only ones stuffing their pockets with stacks of hundred dollar bills- What's a purse money for winning one of today's Supercross main event ?? 20K ?? Around an average of 45,000 spectators show up for each of the 16 races across the country with the average person spending around 150+ dollars from ticket prices and concessions- and you've got all these jackass rednecks NASCAR IDIOTS showing up to watch cars going around in circles for 4 hours and the winners are making close to a million dollars every race - Supercross does NOT and has NEVER gotten the attention it deserves as far as the RISKS these guys are taking-

Marty was our paperboy when we moved to Point Loma in the early 70's. He delivered the San Diego Evening Tribune, to us in the afternoon. Back then he rode a Monarch,, and would take our Mini Enduro out in the alleyway and wheelie it for days.

Oh, there was an exception. Good ol' Gaylon Mosier was running Maicos around this time, and as you may already know, Maico practically invented the long-travel revolution.

While I respect Marty Smith, I am still a fan of Marty Tripes. You got to give it to a guy who can win the superbowl of MX while blazing his brains out!
