Beautiful! ... This man plays with his heart and soul ... These melodies make me feel so peaceful ... Whatever your name is, thank you for playing this instrument and sharing it ... This is what our world needs ...
I have the same flute given to me as a gift. I wish I could play this theme one day. To be able to play this at a silent moment for the peace, and inspiration, it would give to me, but also to others, it's a worthy goal. But this is not an easy instrument to play. I need a teacher, but I live in NYC and have yet to find one. .
i have a dizi, A chinese flute with some mystery bowl (sounds like a clarinet) and i have a Xiao.... the dizi is Child level compared to the Xiao. Just try it for 3 hours and listen to this..... you will understand the term "asian difficulty" beleave me. still satisfying to play, and theire HUGE, mine is like 81cm lol goodluck for whoever wants to take on the Xiao.
what's a mystery bowl? The Dizi is straight, played horizontally and has a thin clear membrane attached over one hole that adds a certain quality to the sound.
beautiful!! I never knew what this instrument was called. Thanks to Yinru of learn chinese 101. I decided to check it out. I have often heard its voice but never knew the instrument. Very pretty!
@@777fiddlekrazy bro its not hard, the hardest part is to blow correcly. Been playing with mine since yesterday and im able to play all the notes (with some troubles on the low note and highest ones) but not bad for a day on it
Hi Tinkerphil. I play flute as well as other wind instruments. What I found is that you need to get the angle just so (about 45deg) and use the same strength of air you would use in playing a recorder. Try blowing when just covering the left hand note holes and thumb hole and then progress down the scale. Keep on persevering
where can i find more videos or audio of master flute players? Just the flute, not a full orchestra. Doesn't have to be Chinese. It's the devoted practice/mastery/raw feeling that I'm inspired by. Thank you to anyone with recommendations Thank you to anyone with recommendations

Hi Rayn. Thanks for subscribing to my channel. I will put together a new beginners video hopefully in the next couple of weeks. in the mean time try this web site to get going santafefluteschool.com/xiao/ It has clear uncomplicated instructions.
Hi Mary, here is a link to another Xaio musician www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Xiao+Flute+MUSICIANS+TH-cam&&view=detail&mid=F81A0BD6287D33426F4EF81A0BD6287D33426F4E&&FORM=VDRVRV and try this one as well th-cam.com/video/_oMJ9LVrIVA/w-d-xo.html. Otherwise just search youtube for Xaio Chinese flute. There are a lot of tuorials and reviews. You should be able to bring up similar videos from these links and skip those.
So, Mr. Geertson: An amazing and talented Xiao player, no doubt, but this video fails to live up to the expectations given by the title: What exactly are the many moods of the Xiao? What I expected was a kind of mini-lecture and demonstration of exactly what those moods were. And another perplexing question that I have as a flute maker: Why on God's green earth are the lower or bottom portion of the Xiao so long? Sure doesn't help when you're trying to pack it into a suitcase! It seems like it might even be longer than the main fingered part of the instrument. If you would kindly shed some light on these questions, I would be most grateful.
With the Xiao you could play all the same scales as a Native American style flute, a Pueblo (Anasazi) style flute, a Bansuri, a Shakuhachi, a Mojave style flute -and it's extended cousin the Mojave flute. It could also play exotic scales like the Dominant Harmonic (aka Silk Road, Spanish Gypsy or Arabian scale), the Harmonic Minor and Harmonic Major, all the Chinese pentatonic scales (diao), plus several Japanese scales like the Minyō, Ritsu, Ryo, Kokinjoshi, Hirajoshi, Akebono and Ryukuan? Or even unusual scales from Ethiopia like the Tizita major and minor, the Batti major and minor, the Ambessel major or the wonderfully named Yematebela Wofe scale? I called on the knowledge of Wu Dao Nmusic to answer your questions. “I will do my best to answer your questions. The colors of the xiao are actual very determined on the size, make, and bamboo type of the flute. However, there is a lot to be said for the player themselves as they greatly affect the sound as well. The color of the flute for me refers to the tone and quality of the sound. This can change in different climates, from player to player, even from day to day playing. This is the great thing about an open mouthpiece wind instrument, the variations greatly affect the sound that comes forth. An easy indicator is just listening to a high vs low quality xiao. It is very apparent. Even if the pitch is tuned similar the shape of that sound can be drastically different. Even more so does the player have control over these variations. As for the length of the xiao, there are some standards. Some of it is aesthetic (the standard is 9 nodes of bamboo) but it is mostly founded in the quality of the sound. I have played flutes that are super short and others that are very long regardless of key. Generally the deeper the key the longer the flute. Though it also depends on the bamboo type and thickness of the flute wall. This will all affect the sound and the ease of playing. I guess that because the deeper sound can be difficult to play, they can also end up being more quiet. A longer xiao ensures that the notes will resonant more and thus be more audible. An example is a qin xiao and how, just by being smaller, more narrow, and having smaller cuts for embouchure and fingering, it produces a much more quiet sound. I am not a professional xiao craftsmen but this is my best guess.”
@@TheBlindWhistler OK, Paul, thanks for the info. By the way, the player in your video was playing a Xiao made from Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra). It is a high sonority species of bamboo, and I love its tone, which is also sweet and warm. I have made some of my finest pan flutes from it.

+tenryu666 Thank you for YYOUR helpful comments. I have found the following website very helpful in expanding the musical range of my Xiao playing. santafefluteschool.com/resources/xiao/ It is especially helpful with the fingering for the Chinese and North American Indian flute scales
MantraHerbInchSin There is two methods. First one is done by modulating you breath rapidly as with any wind instrument. The second method is by rapidly tapping the sound hole immediately below the note you want vibratto on. Any TH-cam video on vibratto will be as effective on this instrument.
In the West most xiaos come in either the key of C or D. The Chinese name these keys based on the pitch a 4th above, eg: F (C) and G (D). Most world flutes are bottom note centric hence we name the key by the flute's bottom note. So I would say your xaio in A is not so common.
Normally G key is easy to play , F key may a little difficult for men with short finger and arm . A or Bb key is smaller and short , sound is more higher and easy to performance.
I've never heard anything so beautiful in my life. The way this man carries out a note is just so wonderful. He touched my soul.
