    Goodreads should make it so if you haven't rated or reviewed the book you can't vote for it, as it means you haven't actually read it. There are always more votes than there are ratings for the book.
    Too many people vote purely cause they liked an author's previous books. Colleen Hoover got so high in the rankings as people liked previous romances by her. As you said, if they'd read it they would acknowledge it isn't a romance and not vote for it in that category.

    • @MsSmartin1991
      @MsSmartin1991 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It shouldn't have been in that category but they go based on how the author is shelved I guess. From what I've heard. And shes a romance author.

    • @sohro4401
      @sohro4401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      If Goodreads made it mandatory to rate/review a book before you can vote for it, that would create a huge influx of fake rates/reviews from people just so they can vote for their favorite authors. Goodreads already has a problem of people rating/reviewing books before they are published.

    • @whiteraven562
      @whiteraven562 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sohro4401 Well part of the reason books get rated/reviewed before they're published is people getting Advanced Reader Copies

    • @sohro4401
      @sohro4401 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      whiteraven562 a small part. a few hundred arcs go out, a percentage of that comes back to review. but there are yet to be released books that have hundreds of thousands of “reviews”. a substantial amount of those come from mostly 5star super fans of the author in anticipation or petty 1star haters.

    I loved The Flatshare. The two unique voices, the British humor.
    I even liked the exboyfriend plot because I was emotionally abused by a boyfriend and related to her so much. Years and years later (and after having been married to my amazing husband for 12 years), I still have issues because of my one year terrible relationship.

    I can't remember the last time I loved a romance book as much as I loved Red, White and Royal Blue. To me, every bit of it was perfect and I really liked the fact that Henry didn't turn out to be a jerk. So many of the guys in these stories turn out to be somewhat awful. The guy in Unhoneymooners for example was so spineless towards the end and refused to believe the girl even though her concerns were pretty reasonable. The chracters in RWRB however were realistic and flawed but overall sweet and lovely.

    i feel like it depends for books in a series. like I'm okay with twk being nominated, but the SEVENTEENTH book in a series? at this point it's not even about the book, anything jr ward writes is getting nominated. however it's the only paranormal book nominated so I'm glad we had that.

    Haha I totally get you by the end of this video! I was so burnt out and over reading books I didn’t actually want to read by the end. I think The Bride Test was the best, but like you said, Things You Save in a Fire was a pleasant surprise! I’m still glad a diverse romance with a debut author won!

    Yes! This is the first time I’ve heard someone say that the enemies to lovers was just a little too quick in red, white & royal blue! I absolutely loved the romance but I was a little let down by how quickly it went from them being enemies to best friends and then lovers. I still loved their relationship but would’ve loved to see their dislike for each other just a little longer.

    This was such a good video! When I saw on goodreads that you were reading them all I got excited for the video. I tried reading some of the flat share and was so excited for it because the premise is fantastic but the book like you said was straight up depressing. It was way too slow. My favourite read of the year was Red, White and Royal Blue so I was super stoked that it won.

    I liked The Flatshare, I was sad that you struggled through it but I agree the pacing was a lot to get thru. I read it on a long road trip so I wasn’t all that bothered.
    Curiousity about Leon and his brother kept me going through the slow parts.

    I actually just finished reading Verity and while I can definitely see your point, I have a different perspective. I also consider myself a seasoned reader. However, I don't typically delve into thrillers. My usual genres are usually fantasy and sci fi. Anything that takes place in a world different from ours to make it easier to escape from every day life. I have consumed an alarming amount of content in these genres and I've come to realize to a certain extent, the amount of knowledge I have can ruin the experience of reading an otherwise great story. Because I can now predict plot lines and am familiar with the structure with how these books are, if a plot doesn't go the way I want it to go, it can blind me to author's way to storytelling because I'm focused on that one detail. I noticed you had an issue with the way Verity ended and while I certainly respect your opinion, I wonder if you would've though differently if you were less familiar with the way thrillers are usually structured and what is considered a "good" thriller. LOL I definitely agree that the fact that no one realized Verity was faking it is HIGHLY unlikely from a medical standpoint and is a huge plot hole. However, I quite liked the twist at the end. Especially considering the last line of the novel where Lowen questions "What truth was she really manipulating?", That line makes you doubt everything because Lowen is right. Who was the real Verity? The one who killer her child? Or the good mother who was just dedicated to her craft as a writer? Did they kill an innocent woman or a cold blooded psychopath? We will never know and the novel gives me chills.

    Because of you, I am now a Helen Hoang fan. I read Kiss Quotient in a matter of hours! I know that it's short, but, what I mean is I couldn't put it down! Thank you for such a good recommendation! I honestly don't trust Goodreads ratings all that much now, and compiled lists of "books you must read blah blah blah" because it turns out that I don't like most of them. I trust your reviews, and I don't mind spoilers because I want to know what I'm getting into. Thanks so much!! I'm off to the Bride Test next. Thank you! I'm a happy subscriber!

    MOE, VERITY IS SOOOO FREAKING GOOD. Colleen Hoover is my fav author, then John Green. I love every single one of her books, except maybe 'Love Merit', and I still haven't picked a fav yet. Albeit, I will say Verity is for the most part more of a thriller than a romantic book but it's still both.
    *Spoilers ahead*
    edit: I don't know, you make a good point about the subtle plot holes that the end of Verity didn't really fill in but I personally still love the ending. I love that Colleen had us guessing if Verity really was the victim or is she just the culprit trying to cover up her tracks with the letter. I also love that whether she did It or not, she's dead either way, so the readers have mixed feelings of anxiety that Lowen and Jeremy might've murdered an innocent person and moved on with their lives. I don't know, but I personally believe that this was a really good thriller, especially for this only being her second thriller book. The suspense was very intense.

    The Girl He Used To Know is a book I really didn’t enjoy either and the ending with 9/11 came out of freaking nowhere, and it made me feel so icky, I hate when authors use real life tragedies to add emotion to their fictional stories... it didn’t have anything to do with the story and it just felt wrong.

    I'm honestly surprised that the 17th book in any series would make a top romance list. Yes they definitely have a steady audience by that point, but it becomes very daunting to pick up a romance series that is that long. Paranormal romance is the worst to pick up like this, in my opinion, because the tropes have changed so much over time and the first couple books, or the first 10 books, could be very weird and out of touch.

  • @elsewhere989
    @elsewhere989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Spoilers BTW
    I actually didn't take the ending of verity in that direction. I interpreted as: because it was the intentions behind Verity's actions, we can never know if the manuscript is true and if Verity is lying.
    Which doesn't change much because I think writing about your own children in such a way is really effed up.
    This goes for authors too. How much of what we are reading directly reflects the authors mind. It makes it so much more personal.

    I actually really disliked the Bride Test, and that surprised me because I loved the Kiss Quotient. Definitely in the minority here, but a few of the events left a bad taste in my mouth.

    i totally agree with the verity observation. i'm like you, i really really like the beginning and middle of the book. i love romance, but thriller is my fav kind of book. and when i first read the ending i was just kind of sitting there in shock not knowing what to think. i guess it was supposed to be open ended, which i can get behind in some stories, but not this one. to me, verity still did all of it. because it would literally be SO LAAAAAAME if she didn't!!!!!! and the brain scan thing bothered me too, i guess she could've paid off doctors to make it look like it??? but i was willing to overlook that if the ending was good..... but it wasn't.

    The Bride Test sounds a lot like The Rosie Project... at least in terms of the premise

    This popped in my recommended and after watching this I noticed we have opposite taste in romance book 😂😂. I absolutely loved "the flatshare" and think that "the bride test" was pure garbage. Love the editing

    Verify was so twisted! That’s the only book I’ve read this year that finished in one sitting because it was so crazy. The ending... didn’t alter my view of the book as much as it did yours because I think I liked the mind fuck ??? I was mainly annoyed because I didn’t get the satisfaction of TRULY knowing what side is true. Colleen mentioned in a post that she purposely left it up to the reader to decide which is correct: the manuscript or the letter. I’m like 😭😭😭 wtf.

    Lol I really enjoyed The Flatshare and disliked Things You Save in a Fire. The romance was fine but I strongly disagree with the specific brand of forgiveness promoted in the book.
