  • This is part of a short mini series on the modifications I am doing to my 2004 Honda XR650L. In this video I am removing the smog unit. This is done mostly to save weight and improve looks, but it does allow more free airflow to the engine and lessen the popping on declaration as well.

    Question about this smog contraption - I understand that it uses “unburnt air” or whatever and mixes it with the new air from the filter, but where does it pull the air from?? I know it comes out from the front of the motor, but is there empty space in there? Can someone kindly clarify?

    Just removing the smog pump did you realize any difference in the way the bike ran?

    Hey I need help!
    I've got a 2007 XR650L with:
    FMF Pipe, (Standard Jet Currently), FMF Needle with one setting down, Better Air filter, and removed snorkel.
    After removing smog kit and oil separator, my bike won't run on it's own cold. I've messed with the carb by swapping the jets and adjusting the needle over six times. I took it to two different motorcycle mechanics as well, which didn't get me much farther. Any Ideas? I shouldn't have to reinstall the smog kit right?

      Thanks, My channel has a lot of variety. It probably hurts the channel more than anything, but I've got a lot of different hobbies/video subjects. People usually want to see one specific thing from a channel, but I more or less make videos about what I am doing at the current time be it guns, RC, precious metals, computers, motorcycles, or whatever!

    The smog crap is exactly that - crap. All it does is make carbon build in your cylinder head and on your piston faster, and restricts air flow.
    What I did: Removed smog equipment and snorkel, rejetted carb plus high flow air filter and FMF full exhaust.
    Makes a world of a difference.

    hi does the bolt that hold the seat strap also hold the seat or they only hold the strap

      Master Solomon mine never had the strap but take off both white panels.
      then 2 5mm Alan bolts on the L&R side. then 2 12 mm bolts in the wheel well facing out.
      vwola seat is off.

      mxf7010g8k Ah very nice, thanks! Did you use the OEM bolts that you removed from the holes to mount the aluminum plate? (Mines covered in the shed for winter, or I'd go check em out haha)

    • @BigMikesHobbyChannel
      @BigMikesHobbyChannel  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrMnMade No, I ended up using my own bolts. I needed more to actually mount the plate anyway so I just changed them all out.

      Yea lol, Its all well and good until I actually try to talk in the video... The next series of mods will be the front fender, carb mods, de-snorkeling/better air filter, and the gas tank, but it may be a while before I start getting stuff together for those.

      UMMMMM, a fair amount. I at least want to maintain my ability to ride backroads and stuff so Ill probably keep it DS at least for a while. Probably going to get some avon distanzias when the time comes for some new tread. Whats on now is great for tread life and okay on dry pavement, but apparently shit in the wet and a joke off road.

    • @leoffensive
      @leoffensive 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea if your doing more road riding those should work out.
      if you want a good 50/50 check out shinko 244s

    • @BigMikesHobbyChannel
      @BigMikesHobbyChannel  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I plan to mostly be on road, but you never know. Would be nice to get some 17's later but for now Ill run the 21/18's.
      You are probably closer to 50/50 if not even more so offroad right? What do you run? If I get some nobbies Ill probably run the dunlop d606. People seem to love them and they are pretty fair priced.

    im surprised you keep that annoying ass strap on the seat.
    lol on mine i didnt like sitting on it when i go back on the seat

    • @BigMikesHobbyChannel
      @BigMikesHobbyChannel  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mah, I dont really mind it at all and the seat seems somewhat formed to it at this point. besides, then I can tuck my sack back under it. Extra stability.

    If the removal doesn't do anything but make your bike look better and create a bit more air flow to the motor, why bother.
