Cue Bids are Confusing! - with Graeme Tuffnell

Partner opens 1♠ and - with our 19 hcp and spade fit - we figure we're going to slam. But won't everyone else bid slam as well? I wondered if I could use cue bidding to find out if we could safely bid to 6NT to come out in front, but I wasn't fully confident I should or that I would do it correctly.

If my regular partner is North, i would respond 2NT to his 1S opening bid, alerted and described as "early blackwood." His response, 3H (2 KCs no trump Q). Then I would settle at 6S. I could bid the early blackwood because i have first or second round stoppers in all of the off suits. Very effective, allowing us to stop at 4 if the answer to blackwood isn't favorable.

Looking at the North-South hands only... I would definitely be comfortable with 6S since it's easy to count 12 tricks with a club ruff after the A-K. Making any 7 requires a successful guess for the spade queen, though. The best line I can think of would be cash one top spade and then finesse if the singleton Q doesn't drop, which is only ~55% or so.
From that bidding, after knowing that partner had the A!C and the K!H, I would have been very tempted to bid 6NT. And using RKC, knowing that partner had both aces would also make 6NT look very appealing. So as Graham said, if you know you want to be in 6!S, just take a leap of faith and bid it.
Really interesting discussion about the different bidding approaches! In the auction I would have bid 4NT when North opened 1S.
Looks like both 7S and 7NT would make, so as 7NT would get a slightly higher score it would be the better contract on this layout. But if spades had split 4-1 with one defender holding Qxxx then the play of the spades could be tricky in either 7S or 7NT.
7 makes but you don't want to be in it - 6S seems to be the most sensible contract - look how I would bid the hand.
7NT doesn't make - only 12 tricks and that requires you to guess the spade finesse correctly. The HQ and DJ are offside and diamonds don't split 3-3. You get 5S+2H+3D+2C.
7S can make, by guessing the SQ, pulling trump, tossing a H from dummy on the DQ and trumping out the HQ, setting up the 5th H on which you can toss dummy's club loseer.
If it were humans playing I suspect after 4C the response would be 4S since partner is min but south would go to 4 NT for RKCB
I agree straight to 4NT but I cannot understand why North just bid 2 spades in response to Souths 2H. He knows they now have a fit in hearts. Shouldn’t he have let south know that.
Roman Key Card looks like a better option to me. 1S, 2H, 2S, 4NT, 5H (2 key cards, no QS), you bid 6S.
I thought all the cue bidding and having all the aces and kings, when do you bid 7?
A lot of this only makes sense playing 4 card majors. How do you get there with ACOL? That looks like a 1NT-(2D)-2H-(3NT)-4H then Blackwood?
Agree with RKC... 1s,4NT, 5h - (both aces , no QS)but then you bid 6NT surely?
My gut would tell me 6spades but I would worry about the vulnerability

Nope, just says they are minimum and did not have any other good bid.
I thought cue bidding was when you bid opponents suit. Am I wrong?
Confusingly, it has two meanings: when you bid opponents' suit as a conventional meaning (showing a limit raise with a fit in partner's suit, Michael's cue bid...), or when you show first and second round controls while exploring for slam.
Piggy backing on DK's response. That second example of cue bidding is after you've established the trump suit between you.
