@@lawrencelewis8105 Well, it was 50 years ago, but as I recall I had a small fedora, a dark jacket and bowtie. And most importantly, a silver dollar that I kept flipping. Plus, I told people I was George Raft. That helped a lot.
@@ronaldcammarata3422 Very cool! It's the silver dollar that did it. I know that about Raft, flipping the silver dollar but I've never seen the movie that comes from. Do you know what it is? I'm sure you've seen "Some Like It Hot?" There's a reference to it in that film.
Difficult to notice ANYONE on the screen when Cagney's fizzing electricity scorches the celluloid! His reactions are as compelling as his assertiveness...
Did you know that Loretta Young was a horrible prude? She used to keep a. Swear jar on set,Robert Mitchum said give the cunt ten bucks and tell her to fuck off!
George Raft who was the other guy dancing against Cagney was no slouch on the dance floor. Both of them were excellent, talented “hoofers” as they were called on those days. I guess it was quite acceptable for tough guys to be good dancers and show it.
Cagney was one of the great hoofers, although Jack Warner rarely let him be showcased for his dancing. His biggest dancing role won him his only Oscar. It's a shame he couldn't have danced with Astaire and Kelly.
It would have great to see Cagney tap with Ginger Rodgers as they were great personalities as well as exquisite, shapeshifting movers. Astaire, genius though he was, was a bland personality.
Jimmy Cagney recommended George Raft for this role and they were life long friends. They had great respect for each other. Each Dawn I Die is a Great movie and should be shown more often. Too bad they did not do more films together. It would have been great fun if they did a Dancing Movie together. Maybe with the new technology it will happen someday!
Whenever it came to them doing any dance numbers as well as portraying gangster tough guys, both Cagney & Raft were great. Another thing they had in common was being born/raised New Yorkers though Cagney's from the Lower East Side while Raft came from Hell's Kitchen. 🔫🔫🎬🎥🤐 James Cagney R.I.P George Raft R.I.P ☆☆☆☆☆☆
Raymond Steen I had a professor in college that was introducing himself the first day of class; giving us some “tidbits about his life”. He said the fact that always impressed people the most was “I graduated from the high school James Cagney got kicked out of.” It certainly was the fact I was most interested in.
In Cagney's autobiography, he relays the story of how George Raft and his mother used to perform in dance contests to earn money. Raft reportedly tied his shoes with piano wire to numb his feet when dancing a long time. After a while Raft noticed he was going green around the lips, which supposedly was a sign of a minor heart attack.
This is not the first time that Jimmy Cagney danced on the Silver Screen ... he was in the 1929 movie, "The Broadway Melody of 1929". Along with him was another dancer, George Raft. However neither of them was listed. Both these fellows started in Hollywood as dancers but later became known for their roles as GANGSTERS !!!
For those who had not seen Taxi (1931) it is a unknown classic and one of Cagney's best films ever! Besides the movie being in the Jewish Hall Of Fame, you can actually hear Cagney speaking Yiddish to a fellow cab driver but most importantly, Taxi is the film that Cagney says " You Dirty Rat!"
Gary Mazzeo: You keep saying this. You left this same remark on another Taxi video. George Raft danced professional for 15 years before doing this movie. I wish Cagney had done more movies with Loretta Young. Their love scenes in this movie were cute. I recall that he rubbed noses with her Eskimo style before he kissed her.
George Raft and Joan Blondell. They had to be mob related. It was a set up! Jimmy always looked so happy when he was dancing. My favorite is with Ruby Keeler in FOOTLIGHTS PARADE 1933.
George Raft Claimed a lot of reasons to dyeing broke but one of the reasons he did not mention was his investments in Cuban Gambling when Castro took over Cuba, he lost all that money.
This is not the first on screen dance of Cagney. He danced in Gold Diggers of Broadway 1929 as an uncredited dancer. The film in it's entirely is lost, though his dance scene was found in a section with a portion of footage. BTW he was a hell of a dancer, do yourself a favor and watch Gold Diggers so you can see him when he was an unknown Hoofer.
You will also see George Raft in the "Gold Diggers of Broadway" 1929. Doing the Charleston, which was his famous signature dance, at the very end before the screen goes black. George was credited. Cagney was not credited but I agree it had to be Cagney. The were both good dancer's and good friends before they did either movie. After this they both went off to Hollywood to do "Gangster" Movies.
"Watch that mug's pan when I get handed that cup" gotta love the lingo back in the day
The one and only, the great James Cagney. The magnificently ageless beautiful, classy Loretta Young. George Raft ... the real deal ... a great actor
I once went trick-or-treating as George Raft. That was around 1969, 1970 and I was 10 or 11. Seriously.
I envy you. 😣
Atta boy thats th ticket!
How did you dress? did people know you were George Raft when you came to their door? More info please!

You are so right. By the way I just noticed this the shorter version there is a longer one here on YT. So you can enjoy more.
Jimmy Cagney and George Raft .Thats what i call class .
I can't stop laughing every time I watch this film. James Cagney was great.
He did a scene where he kissed a girl and she slapped him, and he head bunted her forehead...LOL
Is it fair for a man to be so talented as James Cagney? :) I understand he was a self-taught dancer.
Did anyone notice that Cagney's dance partner is the always lovely Loretta Young? 😊❤
I did.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Especially after watching They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Raft and Cagney, two wonderful dancers.

@@mikeos1 He was part Irish and part Norwegian. I think the Jewish reference has to do with Cagney speaking some Yiddish in the movie.
He was. I guess he lived in a Yiddish speaking neighborhood
He danced the quick step.
Look up George Raft dancing the tango, rumba, etc. He started dancing at 12!
Deck 'em..specially in "Cagney style'!!
Cagney The Greatest❤
Raft was doing a Tango for a popular song. Cagney by right was on target.....
Gary Mazzeo , technically the music was a Quickstep not a Foxtrot. Raft was doing a Foxtrot, Cagney was doing half Foxtrot and half Quickstep.

Pancake your right George was doing a more classic Foxtrot Cagney mixed in the Quickstep. George played low key because it was Cagney's gig :- )
Gary Mazzeo 2of my favourite gangsters

Cagney’s first screen dance ends just the way you thought it would.
Cagney danced the year before, with Jean Harlow in The Public Enemy
Cagney and Raft became good friends, both didnt get along with Edward G Robinson at Warners
George Raft and Joan Blondell. They had to be mob related. It was a set up!

Shanghai Lil! It was, as they say, a different time.

Apparently he also taught dancing classes.
What about George Raft?
Not true. A then unknown Cagney makes a cameo as a dancer in the broadway melody of 1929.
He started in the mailroom of Paramount pictures.
what song are they dancing to?
Loretta Young was always gorgeous, but she was beyond stunning as a young woman. She's only 17 or 18 years old here.
This would have been a great video had you not put those ridiculously large adlinks at the top that covers a good portion of it.
29 thumbs down
Let's see if you can Dance like that.
That's the problem with people today, you should be allowed to punch someone in the face when they deserve it.
Indeed.

Why he’s using violence

Sometimes, just sometimes, it's not just the only answer, it's the Best answer ...
Because he is playing a role as a tough guy with bad manners

Cagney should've swallowed the gum before dancing. Chewing gum takes away from classiness.
That's his character in the film!
Raft's partner was chewing gum too. Also not classy.
Doesn't impair his artistry .
Cagney could have been eating a Big Mac and still he would have had class .
He was so light on his feet.
