    The wild animals are learning that your homeplace is a new source of food. I'm afraid that you will have to pen them up and stop the free ranging. It is probably the only way to protect them

    • @mikerichards8400
      @mikerichards8400 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      You are absolutely correct. I know of a certainty that coyotes, foxes, hawks, raccoons, stray dogs, and other woods animals will destroy chickens and other farm animals.

    • @DeborahBurton.
      @DeborahBurton. ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Absolutely agree. Once they find a food source, your only chance to save your chickens is to pen them until you remove the threat. Otherwise, you will lose all your birds.

      Not sure of your state's night hunting regs, pertaining to livestock protection, but maybe it's time to consider thermal scope for your rifle. Maybe a raised platform placed in a high traffic areas.

    Hey, Dutch. We're from Oklahoma, about 40 mins south of you. I've never done any 'homesteading,'' but my wife has. She says the "two dark spots" look like they could be turkey vultures. When something's been killed, or there's "a smell of death" in an area, they'll stalk that area looking for whatever's dead. You just lost half your flock and that's what they're probably smelling
    ---
    One way she dealt with them was to take her (laundry dryer) lint, because it smells like humans, and embed it slightly (still exposed to the air) all around the areas you want to protect. It will work on most predators, unless the bob cat is too large-- then you might be successful with strung wind chymes of some sort-- something that will make noise upon movement
    ---
    The best deterrent, though, is a large dog (she says a Great Pyrenees is one of the best breeds) to stay outside and guard your stuff
    Pray'in for you

    • @kathymac21
      @kathymac21 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great Pyrenees dogs around here in NC tend to roam. People cannot keep them on their property. They are also food aggressive people are saying. There is one they keeps being brought back to the shelter. Sad.

    • @pepperooli
      @pepperooli ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you are going to get LGD, get at least two. A second dog can and will watch the other dog's back. If at all possible, get puppies so that they can grow up together. They will defend each other to the death.

    Sorry for your loss Dutch , maybe its time to consider a fenced in run for them , covered so flying preditors cant get them , they can still be "free range" just safer in a fenced covered coop .have you considered an invisible fence to keep the dogs in your property ? its like an electric fence , the dogs wear a collar and they get a slight zap if they try to pass the barrier . its more feasable than fencing the whole 40 acres , you can do just around the house and animal area with the invisible fence . more cost effective too . just a thought

    Hi, this is my first post on your channel. We homestead too. We live out in the middle of nowhere. We have raised chickens for years. There’s power in numbers and we also usually have 1 rooster for every 3 or 4 hens. They are very protective . Also remember that this is spring and there are a lot of predators that have young ones to feed.

    I think the difference this year vs last year is you used to cut your grass so animals felt exposed if they came to attack. Now that you spend all the time at your other property and don’t maintain your homestead the way you used to, the predators can sneak up on your chickens and peacocks.

    I'm a member of a group that follows mountain lions and bobcats, and they share advice about what to do to protect your small animals and livestock like chickens and goats. What a lot of the members do for their chickens is build huge pens that include an indoor section for the birds to roost and sleep and lay (a little like your coop now, but just for the indoor part), and then they have a huge pen that is screened in on the sides and overhead that the cats can't get through. The screen is made of some pretty solid wire that the big cats can't just shred with a swipe of their paws. The base has to be right on the ground (no gaps even big enough for a chicken to stick its head through), and is reinforced by either wood planks or metal poles, to add weight to the enclosure and allow you to anchor it to the ground. One of the members had a setup with a pen that looked similar to a chicken tractor (he told me what it was, but I've forgotten), and it was thoroughly enclosed as noted above. He got pics on a trail cam showing a bob trying to get in the pen, attempting to find access for several minutes before finally giving up. I think something like that would be the way to go for you, and only allow the birds to free range when one of you can be outside with them for a while.
    It's likely that the bob in your pics is either a cub or a young adult. If it's a female adult, it could be hunting your homestead because there are cubs to feed.

    Sorry to hear about your flock.
    We have had a cougar, foxes and a dog, attack out flock over the years. We tried using our scent all over our property. Hair clippings, shredded bar soap, as well as dryer sheets. They work but it is a constant need to replace it. We ended up getting a Jenny. We never had her penned. She had the whole property to roam. She hardly left the areas where the other animals were. She would follow the chickens and would sorta move them back closer to the rest of the animals. One evening we heard some noise that sent us all running out armed to see what was going on. It was a bobcat. That Jenny apparently had kicked her and she ran up a tree and the Jenny was circling the tree where the bobcat went for refuge. Bobcat was taken care of.
    My husband grew up on a farm his family always had 2 or 3 donkeys for protection. He said they each had a specific group or groups of animals to protect. He said the Jenny was the furious one of the bunch.
    Do you want to know which of the attacks that took our the most of our flock? And it happened I'm broad daylight. The neighbors lab took out 25 chickens in a matter of 30 mins. Apparently the neighbor would feed him chickens as a treat. Bad choice.
    My grandpa always had a pack of 4 or 5 dogs he trained to protect all the animals.
    What works for me may not work for you.
    The black spots look like some sort of vulture. They smell death from miles away.

      Mud and a horse’s hooves Don’t make for good company...
      Given time, without consistent, daily hoof care...
      Any equine Will develop hoof problems, like-Founder, Thrush, Possibly White Line-to name only a very few, which can worsen without proper care once noticed-ASAP....
      Horses Can develop other health issues and problems as well-in a continually too wet atmosphere...
      It’s Always Best-to groom them and pick out their hooves once a day...
      Too...Horses ARE Prey Animals...
      With marauding Predators around your place-I’d Keep A Close Eye On your mini’s...
      A bobcat Can take down a mini Or horse-by itself...
      And a coyote pack-well...
      Bears can be Worse-especially coming out of hibernation, looking for a mate...
      Now these predatory animals have discovered Your place as a Food Source...They’ll be back.

Qe have several packs of cayotes that cross my 17 acres and my goats, pigs, chickens, and guinea fowl have been fairly safe with our 3 dogs patroling the fenced in acreas at night. A 11 montj old great Perenese, 10 month old Catahoula, and a 5 month old great Perenese mix. They do a good job and are very much still learning their job but when the cayotes are out and whooping and hollering they run up to the fence line and let them know not to mess with their animals.

I will tell you that our local farmers here has said that there's a increase in amount of attacks on live stock. So you'll have to be still and quiet as you wait to ambush. In addition to the electronic call, having a decoy (animated) helps. Cats love motion with the sounds of prey.

    put a cage that's cat, pig, or coyote proof, and put a hen in it. Set as heavy of traps as you can all around it. Boil the traps to get oils and human scent off of them. Then handle only with gloves after this/ touch yourself or anything that could have human scent on it, change gloves. Put traps in plastic bag to transport them to trapping area. use gloves until you have them sett.

    Turn on your Closed Captioning Dutch! Sorry about your rooster! You better get ahold of a predator control trapper! Contact your state DNR! They’ll know someone to put you in touch with that can eliminate the predators! Also that female bobcat may have baby bobcats… more predators! Coyotes too will have pups! More predators to deal with! Nip it in the bud now

    Hi Dutch, talk to Brandon at Eddy Family Farm. 😢 He had something attack his chickens.
    Leighton his oldest has learned how to set traps on their property. The homesteader
    that went over to teach Leighton and Brandon how to set traps and what this young man
    uses for bate and he does more than sprinkle it around. I also think that the animal smells
    Carried by the wind is attracting predators, along with the animal noises. Plus the fact that
    you are not outside now, as much as you had
    been the first year and a half. Just some food for thought from your Michigander.

    I think bobcats may be easier to catch since they can be caught in cage traps and barely covered traps with tons of guiding. You do have to use a hanging attraction above the set to really help get them in. Old CD, feather, etc, whatever is legal in your state. That cubby set you made that caught the dog is a type of set used for bobcats. You need to pattern the bobcat with the cameras, so you can set right on it's most used pathways.

    Hey Dutch, First i am not a homesteader so i dont know anything about anything. I have watched a few of your videos including this one. As someone who doesnt know anything about homesteading the first thing that popped into my head and something i would try to do is
    1. pin up the free range animals at night .... at least for the time being.
    2. I would try to setup an electric fence between the homestead and the woods. I fence strong enough to give a really good zap to anything that tried to get by it. This is something i would hook up at night and unhook up first thing in the morning.
    I dont know if this i possible or even if this would work. All i know is that this is what i would try to do myself if i was in your situation.
    Just thinking that after a few good zaps whatever was trying to get in would learn that getting in is not the best thing to do and move on somewhere else for easier prey.
    One more thing i would do if i was you would be to setup some motion sensor lights. Predators like to use the darkness to get their prey and lighting their surroundings will ruin the efforts.
