I just ordered a SP GP40-2 athearn genesis locomotive model from my hobby shop and must say they are awesome thank you for showing us your model locomotive and I subscribed to your channel!
Awesome points of view. Very much appreciated. Amature model maker here... Purchased the bachman N stallion set. Includes a beautiful (DC) F 7-A, super smooth running diesel with a circuit board & wiring of some sort inside. It stopped dead, completely. Have no idea why... Anyone??? Has less then 24 hours running time. I built my entire layout around this theme. I'm pissed! Thanks,
I looked to me as if the engine ran faster when going short hood forward. That is a complaint I have with a lot of engines, they don't go slow enough. Overall a great review.
I’ve been enjoying your videos, they are very helpful. I noticed your channel since I live close to Tulsa. I have what’s probably a dumb question but I can’t really find an answer. If I buy a dcc sound decoder is that all I need to convert the loco to dcc or do a have to buy the non sound decoder as well? Many thanks, my 3 daughters and I are just starting a 4x12 ho layout.
So you can generally buy dcc boards that will replace the dc boards, or you can buy a dcc board that will plug into the dc board. you can take off the shell and see what kind of plug there is in the board or if there isn’t a plug. Most have an 8pin type of plug or the like and then you can by the dcc board to connect to that. Keep in mind if you want a sound decoder you are also going to have to buy a speaker to mount in the loco. There may already be a place for the speaker in there, I’m not sure, then you will need to buy the correct speaker size to fit. If there isn’t a space for the speaker already in there then it is a little harder since you will have to figure out what size speaker you can fit in the space that is available.
@@StevesTrains Thank you, thank you! Exactly what I was needing to know. I have two locos that have no board but from here on out I’m buying them dcc ready or complete. To make sure I’m clear, if I buy a sound decoder that’s the only one I need to complete dcc conversion other than maybe a speaker right?
TH-cam puts ads galore this time of year. My daily ad revenue usually triples from mid November through Christmas. I know that gets annoying to see the extra ads they put in this time of year but I also don’t want to go through and turn off automatic ads and do manual ad placements in the videos either. In any event, most of those ads will magically go away in about a month.
Athearn usually has locomotives available in different formats but this particular one came out a few years ago so I don’t know what might be available currently. These are usually produced in runs where you have availability for a time and then nothing available for some time while they are producing other locomotives.
Me pondría en contacto con Horizon Hobbies: www.horizonhobby.com/contact y les preguntaría. No estoy seguro de cuáles son las opciones para comprarlos en México.
Yeah, most manufacturers only make a batch of locomotives in specific road names every so many years, and then once they are sold that is it for a while. So, unless it is one of the major railroads like UP, BNSF, CSX, and NS, it can be hard to find what you want at times.
@@StevesTrains i caught what u said about growing up near Chicago. I did too my mom is from lil town called Peoton and my grandparents house was right next to the tracks so I would watch trains all night . I remember watching the Illinois central golf go through. All the time
Yeah, it is crazy to think about the difference. The price is pretty typical for detailed DCC locomotives. You can either have a DCC/sound locomotive with less detail for less money, or have a highly detailed locomotive without a sound decoder for less money, but hard to have both for less unfortunately these days.
@@StevesTrains That is kind of the thing, though, isn't it? DCC and sound have added a lot to the experience, but one must pay. The old Blue Box sets were basic, with the expectation the modeler would add the details, and that is something else that has been lost. Now people want super detailed locos out of the box. :-) There's no complaining here. It is just an observation on how much things have changed since the 80s. :-)
@@jonglass Yep, that is true for sure. The price of entry can be steep for a lot of this stuff. That obviously makes it tough on people just getting into the hobby. Of course that is why I like small switching layouts and things like that since you don't need a lot to get going and even fully finish a layout and buy all the equipment.
I just had a look at the latest release of the CP units in Action Red and the Heritage scheme. Nice recordings and pretty good detail overall. BUT, painted on class lights and unlit number boards? Really? These short comings relegate them to mid grade product at a premium price. Even Bachmann locos come with lit number boards. Come on Athearn. This is 2021, not 1981.
@@mikedurhan9941 you're missing the point...they're inaccurate. They should come with ditchlights front/rear. Why would I buy a model that's prototypically inaccurate and have to do work to it right out of the box? That's just stupid and a waste of money and time.
Great review! Athearn is releasing some really nice items.
I’ve got the gp39-2 mkt athearn unit. Tsunami2 is awesome.

Great Video, but maybe you should post on some other sites, Now we get to sit through 4 ads on fairly short vid.

Great review, looking for the UP version also
But of course, they just so happened to not be making then in NS liveries, which is what I’ve been looking for. sigh
Been trying to find an Illinois Central golf in N and I can't find one 😫

This is a far cry from the Athearn blue box locos I used to buy. Ouch on the price ;-)

If you figure in inflation from the 70s and 80s the DC only versions are right around the same price as they were then with inflation calculated in
@@TheBeeMan1994 Good point. It is always easy to lose track of the impact of inflation on prices over time.

All that money spent and no ditch lights front or rear....👎
And no blue smoke out the exhaust when moving up to notch 8! The question is............ do you want to pay for ditch lights? I do.
Why should I have to pay extra for something to be installed that they should already come with? 👎🤦
