Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. My wife and I are thinking about moving to Hawaii with our daughter as well. We’re West Indian and Colombian and we moved to the US three years ago. Right now we’re looking for an environment in the US with an island feel. This reminds me so much of the Caribbean. Thank again for sharing. By the way, I’m a teacher as well.,
Don't do it. I'm telling you. Better of just moving to the Carribbean. Highly overpriced. Income from work doesn't justify - and that's if you live on an island with enough jobs to support your life here. If you move to the city - that being on the island of Oahu, everything is crammed. If you feel like spending close to 2k or more to live in a tiny apartment somewhere in the city, then maybe its for you. But don't be surprised as you drive through town and see a whole bunch of tweakers and homeless people lining the streets. And cultural speaking, it's no longer Hawaii anymore. What you will get is fake culture for tourists. No one really cares about Hawaiian culture these days. No one really moves here to experience that. And I think thats a shame. If you doubt my perspective, I can tell you that I was born and raised in Hawaii. I experienced life both in a small town and in the big city. I've know Hawaii for what it truly is. It's not the paradise that people think it to be. I really was it was. It's sad for me to see this place devolve into what it is.
Please don’t move without seriously looking at your financial situation. Too many go homeless in Hawaii trying to live some fantasy in their minds. Everything is more expensive than you think it’s going to be. You need to think about being isolated from family and friends. It’s expensive to fly to the mainland, so you will miss birthdays, weddings, funerals, graduations, etc. You will NOT get home as often as you think. You will miss holidays. What will you do when your parents age? Can you survive the guilt of leaving them thousands of miles away? What happens if they get sick or hurt and you can’t afford to get back home to them? Can you make it without a support system on island? If you’re single, dating is tough. You break up? You’ll see your ex constantly. You’re on an island, so you’re stuck with them. You don’t pass as Hawaiian and you want to date? Good luck. Family is everything there, and the family would rather their child marry the nice Hawaiian down the street over you. If you have children, know that the school system isn’t great, so you will need money for private schooling. Jobs there pay less, and cost of living is higher. Anyone who tells you Hawaii is not racist is a liar. If you can’t pass as Asian or a native Hawaiian, you will deal with racism in some way. Traffic is soul crushing. The homeless situation has exploded. They’re everywhere. Meth is everywhere. Property theft is rampant. It’s not some oasis of tranquility like the tourist propaganda tries portray. People have problems there. People are stressed there. People can barely make rent every month without working multiple jobs. People need to think before they get on the plane. So many don’t.
Chinese/Japanese are dominant on island due to foreign investment and tourism. A lot of industry caters to them because they have deep pockets. As far as racism goes, if you’re White, you’ll be at the bottom of the totem pole in a lot of local places. It’s due to the bad history of how Hawaii became a state.
Thanks for your comment. I'm sure it's helpful for many people. We noticed you highlighted many negative points about living in Hawaii. While some, or all, can be true, these do not have to outweigh the positives. Planning to live on an island and adjusting expectations is very important when moving to Hawaii. Mahalo!
@@DennyandNikki This is me! I'm in Orlando, and I found a job that matches my current job exactly in downtown Honolulu. I wasn't seriously considering at first, but now I am. Any more info on the specifics of your move from Orlando would be really helpful!
The Stairway to Heaven hike (Haiku Stairs) is illegal. It runs through private property, and some spots are booby trapped. A Utah trespasser was injured after slipping and being impaled in the neck by a box with screws sticking out. Be safe!
My fiance had a medical rotation last summer there and I'm trying to find some sort of backend IT jobs in Hawaii. Fingers crossed we can snag something lol.
Love the kitchen! I am looking for a place atm and will be arriving in the first week of September (moving back permanent). I like the simple, practical look and feel of the kitchen as well as it appears to have been upgrade or remodeled at some point recently. For the prices you showed in your video, it is right where I would like to be. Hopefully, I can find something like this soon. Mahalo nui loa for the video! I will be watching more and perhaps subscribing.
In regards of groceries, before I went to Hawaii I've heard stories how food is super expensive, how gallon of milk is $10, etc. I've been to all 4 main islands and since I'm a Costco member I was mainly shopping from there and Walmart, also gas at Costco was much cheaper that regular gas station..All the islands have Costco and Walmart and from what I saw prices were not that bad comparing to where I live which is DC area.
Yes, we noticed that certain items are more expensive. But overall, it’s pretty doable. Walmart is definitely one of the cheaper grocery stores on Oahu
@emanuil is correct. I just came back from Oahu, last week for my daughter’s college commencement in Honolulu. This has been the 2nd time I visited Oahu and I definitely would like to come back and now thinking of moving there in the next few years. If you are referring to dairy products, it’s definitely more expensive since Hawaii has to import most of these products from the mainland if not overseas. I also live in DC area, where the living cost is relatively higher than most region in mainland. I think the main thing to consider if you want to move and live in Hawaii is that you need to change your lifestyle and to adjust with the locals. But most importantly to respect the culture. A lot of locals dislike the tourists because they brought the ‘mainland attitude’ to the island. I try to avoid Waikiki Beach and explore the North Shore or other areas to really explore and enjoy the island. Mahalo !!
This video did not cover what "moving to Hawaii" is doing to native hawaiians and real locals. This is a very important subject that I think you should cover.
Dreaming to live on the big island one day...my 14 year old doesn’t want to so I told him as soon as he graduates high school I’m out and he can visit lol Oh and finding a job will be hard for me

You guys could have looked at Kailua is a town on the east coast of the island of Oahu. I heard it's a little cheaper and less traffic plus have everything you need. The area also known as the quieter side of Oahu and amazing beach!
Great video thanks but I was wondering how good the internet service there because I really need the internet for my job and I know it rains a lot and has hurricanes. Thanks
Do you mind me asking what you do in healthcare? I’m a PA student looking to move to the islands after graduation, and I would be interested to learn more about your experience!
This video is VERY informative especially for me. My 2 kids are grown and on their own, my mom is, unfortunately in an assisted living facility with severe dementia and getting worse every day. So, I am living with my dad, to help him out. But I am making a plan to move to Honolulu/Waikiki area since visiting in March 2019. I'm in New York and am done with all the "go, go, go", so am doing as much research as I can and saw your video which is very helpful about how to approach things. Thanks for the information. Also, I work in healthcare and am looking into doing medical coding, which I am certified for. Do you know of any hospitals their that are looking for medical coders?
We really hope you can make your move to Hawaii! It's definitely the opposite of "go, go, go!". I'm not familiar with the job market for medical coders, but just be on the lookout (on job sites) and take the right opportunity. Mahalo for watching, and the island will be waiting for you!
Get ready for culture shock with the keikis. Mainland teachers have an adjustment period with the kids and fellow local teachers and culture. If you teach on the west side as opposed to east Honolulu youll see a difference.
Welcome to the channel! We essentially packed a few bags and started over there. It took some time to settle in with the prices, lifestyle and culture though. Give yourself a year to really get a good feel for the island. Best of luck!
Aloha! I used to live on Oahu between 2012-16 (military) which really helped out financially and socially. A video that I don't really see created is one that covers the subject on difficulties of making friends on the island. It's not immediate because people are wary about newcomers leaving as fast as they came and broke. There's other factors as well but it would be interesting to see a fresh perspective especially due to the pandemic.
we spend 1000 a month on food for a couple in our 50s, We were there on Oahu Feb and seems that the prices of food is the same. BTW we are from San Diego
Thank you so much for being so helpful and open. I have been considering moving and perhaps providing rent for a native Hawaiian to offset gentrification (I think there is a better word, but I don't know what it is). Respectfully, AH
Hello Nikki: Beautiful job on the video. I am looking to move to Hawaii and I don't really know which Island I want to live in yet. Can you please tell me how you rent an AirBnB for a month? Thank you very much for your help.
Aloha Isaac, we only stayed in an Airbnb for the first month we were on the island. We got an airbnb (studio apt) in Waikiki for about $1700. I am sure you can find a wide range of options depending on your needs. I hope this helps!
Just found your channel looking to move from Jacksonville Fl to Hawaii. We’ve been looking at Oahu as well. How’s the market for homes there? We would probably rent too thank you for the tip on airbnb. Looking forward to watching your journey. How are the schools for the kids?
I’m not too sure about buying a home here, since we are renting. But from listening to our neighbors, it seems like the market is competitive below 1.3 million, and less competitive above 1.3 million. Hope that helps :)
I feel like the cost of living in Hawaii is almost the same as Florida. The one plus Hawaii has is that the have the lowest tax of 1%... but the cost of living is almost the same as FL
@@adriannajohnson1325 You should go and visit for two weeks first. Meet a few locals and visit a few business in your line of work. It is the same as living in Australia, but as on average you will probably earn about half as much... so it is expensive if you are not careful. Australia would be a better bet... cleaner, friendlier and higher wages. You'll need a visa and insurance, too, but it is doable and beautiful.
One of the more realistic videos on moving to Hawaii. My fiance and I moved here so he could teach also, were on our third school year. And even funnier, were ready to get the heck away from island life and move to Tampa!😂
😁 Nice! Were originally from San Diego but we’ve done all of the things so Tampa looked comparable! Well we’re on Kauai so its a whole other level of “slow”.😅 Everything is closed by 9pm. One Walmart, one Costco and two Rosses lol. Lots of businesses have closed from covid.☹️ Its beautiful but we really miss the mainland stuff like theme parks, the movies, Target, just overall things to do besides the beach and hiking. We planned on just the two years to fulfill the teaching license requirements and then covid pretty much added a third year. Maui was our top choice but a Kauai school called first. Were just ready to get back to better pay, more opportunities, and just overall the standard of life were used to!
Wow yes, we have never been to Kauai, but I can imagine it’s way more rural than Oahu! Denny has gotten some calls on the big island, so we could’ve moved there as well. Anyways, glad you got to experience Hawaii and now on to a new adventure for you both. Tampa really is a nice city!
I have some advice--don't. Hawaiians are very nice people by and large, but they will tell you, consider just visiting. For decades priveleged people with money decide they want to live in "paradise" and in doing so drive prices up and displace indigenous families and people with deep familial roots in the isles. Spend a little time learning the sad history of the US take over and Hawaiians' struggle to keep their culture and land. Maybe reconsider your impact.
This was a great and informative video! I'm just curious, as I'm looking to move out to the Big Island right after school, what do you do in healthcare? If you don't mind sharing
Bro I’m in CT it’s not that big of a rental and cost of living change But she is from the south so I get it coming to ct from tx it was a dramatic cost of living change as here is 30% higher than tx
Hi Denny and Nikki, We enjoyed watching your Vlog on TH-cam, its very informative and fun. My husband and I are planning to move to Oahu from New York hopefully by this year. I would like to ask you a few questions about moving there is that ok with you. We went there couple years ago for vacation while there we were looking for some info about the apartment but we didn't have luck with it. We use craigslist, Zillow and hawaii house I think. I wanted to ask what website or app did you guys used to find your apartment? Which area you guys living and any suggestion on best area to live close to the beach? I see that you guys also shipped your car from Orlando, we also think about doing that. Do you guys need to change your plate number to Hawaiian plate immediately or you guys still using your Florida plate number? one other question I promise, do you also need to change your driver license to Hawaiian immediately and hows the the process with the DMV? Thank you so much and look forward to hearing from you guys soon, We will keep on watching you guys. Regards Esmee
Aloha Esmee, it's awesome you all are moving to Hawaii. We wish you well on the move. We used Zillow and Apartments.com to find a place to rent on the island. Our place actually came off of Zillow, but places can be somewhat competitive depending on the area. You will have to change your license plate and drivers license quite quickly. Both of these are separate in-person appointments. We had to make appointments about 5 weeks in advance, but that was during the pandemic so it may be faster now. I would make the appointment as soon as you get your place to live. If you move to Oahu, the county is Honolulu so check out their site for more info. (Motor Vehicle Registration www.honolulu.gov/csd/mvinformation.html & Drivers License www.honolulu.gov/csd/dllicense.html) Mahalo and I hope this helps.

I would say tourism and agriculture would be the two main areas to look into! They also have some AmeriCorps programs on the island you could do. It's a year of service type of deal. I hope that helps!

So many don’t.
by asian what do you mean? are you including like middle eastern asians too? can you explain more about the racism?
Mahalo!
So true your comments.I’ve been living in Hawaii for 20 years and I’m still a Haole. Have you ever heard of Kill the Haole day? Nice video.
With all of that being stated how do you feel about living there? Do you live there now?
A lot of people who lives at Orlando moves to Hawaii... and I might be one of them😂
Well, there comes a time when a Floridian has to upgrade on their beaches😎
@@DennyandNikki This is me! I'm in Orlando, and I found a job that matches my current job exactly in downtown Honolulu. I wasn't seriously considering at first, but now I am. Any more info on the specifics of your move from Orlando would be really helpful!
Would love a video about grocery costs!!!!
The Stairway to Heaven hike (Haiku Stairs) is illegal. It runs through private property, and some spots are booby trapped. A Utah trespasser was injured after slipping and being impaled in the neck by a box with screws sticking out. Be safe!
Just watched that you took the legal way, mahalo!
Yes! We did hike the other way to the top! Appreciate your comment and disclaimer though! Mahalo
Go Wit Da Flow 🌊
Love your vids
Dreaming to live on the big island one day...my 14 year old doesn’t want to so I told him as soon as he graduates high school I’m out and he can visit lol
Oh and finding a job will be hard for me
We are also very curious about the big island! We still have to visit, sounds like an amazing island!
I tell my daughter the same thing!
Love the video and thanks for sharing! We just moved to the island two days ago.. finally here :) I watched Denny’s teaching video which was super helpful since I’ll be applying for teaching positions this week! Love watching you guys!
Hope you'll like it here! Good luck getting your teaching job, don't hesitate to email us with any questions you have! We are more than happy to help out when we can!
Much appreciated!! ❤️
I live in central florida and day dream about living in Hawaii :)
That was us too :)
I live in Japan, been here three years, but I want to move back to the states one day… I think Hawaii might be the best in between lol.
It's a perfect in between!
Tip, if you want to sound local say Hawaii like Hawa(glottal stop)ee
No just saying how locals say Hawaii, it’s not Hawai-i like everyone says. Lol
Ya Hawaiian w is pronounced like a v, but most locals say Hawa-i
Or like merry monarch you hear Havai-i
I dream of moving there one day 🥰
You guys could have looked at Kailua is a town on the east coast of the island of Oahu. I heard it's a little cheaper and less traffic plus have everything you need. The area also known as the quieter side of Oahu and amazing beach!
Great video, I am planning a move there in a year or so
Awesome! Good luck with your move to Oahu 🤙
Do videos of hikes, beaches and fav restaurants!
Thanks! More videos are on the way!
Thank you for this. My gf and i will be moving to oahu in 2022. Very helpful!
Exciting! Glad the video was helpful :)
I am going To Ohana Maui I am traveling more and I am getting my own car and getting a place there I was thinking about it .🙂
Welcome to Hawaii
Thank you!
Great video thanks but I was wondering how good the internet service there because I really need the internet for my job and I know it rains a lot and has hurricanes. Thanks
I really want to move to Hawaii to cultivate a healthier inclusive lifestyle for my son. Thanks for the tips!
Glad the video was helpful! Hawaii seems like a great place to live that lifestyle
Do you mind me asking what you do in healthcare? I’m a PA student looking to move to the islands after graduation, and I would be interested to learn more about your experience!
Yes, I work in Mental Health! You can always send us an email, and we can chat a bit more in-depth about finding a job here on the islands!
Teacher wow!! That’s one of the jobs that seems pretty low on money. But your job should help him.
Yes! It is always great to have two incomes on the island! Thanks for watching!
Get ready for culture shock with the keikis. Mainland teachers have an adjustment period with the kids and fellow local teachers and culture. If you teach on the west side as opposed to east Honolulu youll see a difference.
Hi!!! Super late finding you but thanks for the info! As someone also coming from Orlando, how did you guys make this life transition???
Welcome to the channel! We essentially packed a few bags and started over there. It took some time to settle in with the prices, lifestyle and culture though. Give yourself a year to really get a good feel for the island. Best of luck!
This is a very good video. You’re calm and positive.
Thanks! 🤙 Appreciate it
That would be an interesting topic to cover, perhaps that could be included in a different video about settling in Hawaii. Thanks for the suggestion!
Get a job working with the locals. If you’re akamai and have natural Aloha.....fun for years!
I LOVE MY ISLAND 🏝 OAHU HAWAII ALTHOUGH THE COST OF LIVING HERE IS VERY VERY EXSPENDSIVE
🏝 🏝
Every place is expensive
Why did you guys move out of Hawaii? I'm currently in Orlando thinking about making the move to Oahu.
We wanted to do a year of travel. It has nothing to do with Hawaii, we do see ourselves living there long term!
we spend 1000 a month on food for a couple in our 50s, We were there on Oahu Feb and seems that the prices of food is the same. BTW we are from San Diego
What is the price if you want to buy a 3 bedroom house? Do all houses have swimming pools? Is there a lot of tourism? And where do tourists come from?
"people aren't honking" *laughs in road to Hana*
Thank you so much for being so helpful and open. I have been considering moving and perhaps providing rent for a native Hawaiian to offset gentrification (I think there is a better word, but I don't know what it is). Respectfully, AH
Or provide rent for me and help offset major depression and suicide?
Hello Nikki: Beautiful job on the video. I am looking to move to Hawaii and I don't really know which Island I want to live in yet. Can you please tell me how you rent an AirBnB for a month? Thank you very much for your help.
Aloha Isaac, we only stayed in an Airbnb for the first month we were on the island. We got an airbnb (studio apt) in Waikiki for about $1700. I am sure you can find a wide range of options depending on your needs. I hope this helps!
Love it thank you!
You're very welcome! :)
Rent is so much lower there comparing to the San Francisco Bay Area. 😂
Where would you suggest as a good honeymoon location?
I NEEDED this video sooooo bad!
Mahalo for watching! We hope it helps!
I am going to travel to Hawaiian I love airplanes now . This is Rachella
Can you just pack up your shipped vehicle with personal items that you want to take with you?
Hi! Could you tell me - where to buy a good inexpensive mattress? 😊
We got ours at Mattress Firm, it wasn’t expensive at all :)
One of the more realistic videos on moving to Hawaii. My fiance and I moved here so he could teach also, were on our third school year. And even funnier, were ready to get the heck away from island life and move to Tampa!😂
Hahahaha, back to Florida! 😛Tampa is really nice though, we also considered living there! What makes you guys want to leave the island?
True. Tampa is nice!@DennyandNikki
Question: did you started applying as soon as you established a place to live or while you were in an AirBNB?
Denny applied before moving to the island, but I applied while in the Airbnb.
Im thinking about moving to Hawaii but gotta get certain priorities in order.
What if I'm as poor as the locals?
🔗Thank You For Sharing The Links.
Do you think that it would be easy for a cook to find work
My dream is to live in Hawaii
It is pretty awesome! :)
moving to oahu in January of 2022 for uni ! super helpful video (((:
Good luck with the move!! :)
How did you go about negotiating rent?
This was a great and informative video! I'm just curious, as I'm looking to move out to the Big Island right after school, what do you do in healthcare? If you don't mind sharing
Thank you! :) I work in mental health care and have my degree in clinical psychology. What are you graduating in?
@@DennyandNikki Oh you see I'm going to start college soon and I'm still deciding, lots of research to go through!
Ooh I see!! Good luck ☺️
Bro I’m in CT it’s not that big of a rental and cost of living change
But she is from the south so I get it coming to ct from tx it was a dramatic cost of living change as here is 30% higher than tx
Hi Denny and Nikki,
We enjoyed watching your Vlog on TH-cam, its very informative and fun.
Regards
Esmee
@@DennyandNikki Thanks so much for the prompt response. This info is fantastic. Much appreciated. I also went ahead and followed you on IG, if you are open to keep in touch just connect. :) Again thank you very much for your help. Again wonderful content. Keep em coming!!
enlightening. thanks.
What kind of job do you do in the medical field? I am currently a medical assistant and i am wondering if it will be hard for me to get a job there.
Thanks a lot)
You’re very welcome!
Can you guys do a video on good local eats?
There are so many great eats in Oahu. We went over a couple of them in this video: th-cam.com/video/T-2fEH6U0v8/w-d-xo.html
What do you think the best jobs are in Hawaii (big island) with no degree/entry level? Going to be work camping for 6 months to a year and then want to try and live there permanently!!
I would say tourism and agriculture would be the two main areas to look into! They also have some AmeriCorps programs on the island you could do. It's a year of service type of deal. I hope that helps!
Do you shop at the farmers market?
Yes, we have been going to the farmers market on Sundays to get some cheap vegetables and try out the food stands! Have you seen us there?
I am going to Hawai’i Pacific University in January 2021 and don’t know if I should move into on campus dorms or if I should find an apartment 😬
That sounds exciting! Have you ever been to Hawai'i before?
