    When Jon went to the weirwood grove to initiate the new recruits when he was lord commander Wunwun was there. Leathers calmed him by saying they were there to pray and that they were their gods too. Giants might be dumb but it seems they know of and worship the Old Gods too.

Maybe a message of people being wrong about things they always assume are correct?

    Though the show and book don't explore the Faith of the Seven much, I think the idea of 7 specific god parts for specific purposes, and their origin, are very interesting. We know little about Essos religion, I'd argue we know far more about the Old Gods, specifically R'hllor (or however you spell it) because of Stannis' storyline, and the Northern trees. And no, "crone" isn't a derogatory term. It merely means "old woman". Guess it just depends the context.

  • @cyberhikikomori5326
    @cyberhikikomori5326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Always did find it weird how the Faith of the 7 seems like the only religion without any magic tied to it.
    My fave crack theory is the Faith is the magic-cancelling religion & its close association with Oldtown & the Maesters' institution is suppressing magic in the world.

    • @v-iii-b-59suyashkohachade87
      @v-iii-b-59suyashkohachade87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Wow, that was awesome, it totally makes sense, during the old gods magic was so powerful that "arm of dorne" was broken, andals had technology"bronze" swords, concept of magic was alien to them, when they encountered the "first men" it was natural for them to collide.

    • @Slop_Dogg
      @Slop_Dogg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It seems like gods might be tied to locations in this world. It’s possible the seven were left behind in Andalos & even if they could bestow something akin to magic at some point, they’ve long since turned their backs on their adherents for fleeing their domain & allowing it to fall into ruin long ago. It’d make sense why they butchered the Weirwoods, hoping that they were clearing the way for their gods to reign over the lands, but to no avail.

    • @rin-joh8644
      @rin-joh8644 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To give more evidence to this theory is that the Andals brought the Faith of the Seven and iron with them to Westeros. I don't know if it's mentioned in the books; but in real life myth and folklore, iron is anti-magic. In the Bible, God is unable to help the people of Judah against the Valleymen because they had iron chariots. Iron was also used frequently against fairies and other types of mystical creatures.

    • @chaoticneutral7573
      @chaoticneutral7573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well it seems Faith of the Seven is based around Christianity and Old Gods are pagan customs. We can see some parallels like how christians whould cut down holy pagan groves after they king become christian, also Christianity saw magic and pagan gods either as non existing nonsence or witchcraft so it had strong fear/hate feel towards "dark arts" and heathen gods.

    Dude you should totally make Elden ring lore videos, it would give you a good pool of content to pull from to make videos in the large hiatuses between asoiaf projects and books, it’s also written by GRRM so it wouldn’t go outside or seem dissonant or conflict with your channels theme and content library, and if not making Elden ring lore content you should at least do one video or maybe a small experimental series of vids to test the waters with the content or theme of the videos being going through Elden ring and idenifying the things stories lore and objects/powers that seem or feel the most likely to have been thought up written or suggested by GRRM, you could also go through and point out which things are direct or indirect allusions, tributes, Easter eggs or references in Elden ring to Asoiaf or George’s other works. Just a thought, what do you guys think??

    @whycreate I would like to chime in on the topic of the term "crone". What I have to share is anecdotal, but came from my mother. She left this life behind 12 years ago and a couple years before had begun to embrace the title. It's not much, but the following is what I remember of what she told me.
    First she told me this philosophy had the reputation of coming from witchery, but she made the point that it has also been embraced by women of many cultures throughout history as representative of the course of feminine power each woman possesses.
    Every woman is meant to go thru 3 phases of life. The Maid, the Mother and the Crone. I'm not going to try to define each of these since I was not who studied and embraced the belief. I did listen to what she had to say though, and I saw how she implemented that belief into her life.
    She said the crone is not an insult but rather is a title of renown. She claimed the church, in it's fear of the Goddess and her power, had smeared the practice of earth/feminine/birth magic much like had been done to the druids of Europe, for example, turning the image of the Crone into an image of the Witch.
    She embraced this role as Crone, utilizing her experience as the Maid and the Mother to become a foster mother to many troubled, unwanted or abused young women. Once all her own children had grown and started their own lives, this is to what she dedicated herself.
    Anyway, I'd I go any further I'll start getting into some real personal stuff so I'll leave it at that. The main point I'm trying to convey is we have this sort of brainwashed idea of the Crone being a negative thing, but in truth, it's really not. Instead, it's a title for a woman whom, nearing the end of her life, takes all she's learned and loved and gives it down the the Maids and Mothers on their way to their own ends.

      Not much. We know that they were polytheistic, and that they were tolerant of other faiths, allowing those they conquered to continue worshiping their own gods. It is also mentioned that a few of the targaryan dragons were named after some of their gods. Those being their original three dragons (Belarion, Vhagar, and Meraxes) and Syrax, who was princess Rhaenyra’s mount during the dance of the dragons. Since Valyria was destroyed and the targaryans converted to the faith of the seven the rest of their beliefs are just lost to time

    Weird to say, the faith of the 7 is easier to understand. There’s much more detail, sure. But that actually makes it more complicated and confusing.
    I think that we just dismiss the faith of the 7 because it seems to be the faith that, though it is the most wide spread, has the least evidence of being true.

      When the Gods is intervine people complain, when the Gods like the 7 give Humanity free will people say it's not magical enough..
      Like Jamie says, the gods or humans who spilled bloods?
      You want God's play wack a mole with humanity?

    🥲I got excited when I saw the thumbnail, thinking that you started making Elden Ring Lore videos, but got dissapointed. Pls consider doing it, you are the best when it comes to presenting lore heavy videos and would really kill it with elden ring lore

    The seven heavens and seven hells from the faith of the seven are taken straight from Islam, we as Muslims also believe that hell has seven gates or layers to it (circles if you will) and that there are indeed seven heavens.

    This is my interpretation of the deities of ASOIAF.
    There is only one true God, the god of death. The many-faced god. It makes sense, every thing and person and beast must die and decay, thus death is the great connector of all things. Perhaps the Valyrians worshipped the god of death as well, seeing as the House of Black and White originated in the Valyrian Freeholds and use Valar Maghoulis as their motto. The god of death would have gained it's other name by it's many interpretations, such as the Dothraki Horse God who takes the dead to be part of its 'starry khalassar' and ride the night, which sounds an awful lot like the void-state of death the resurrected recall when revived.
    Below this one true God, there are Eldritch beings, possibly even lovecraftian entities, who demand sacrifices and offerings in exchange for gifts and blessings. This 'rank' would include the Drowned God (essentially C'thulu swimming through the watery depths), the Great Other (who resides in the far north beyond the northern aurora), and the Lord of Light.
    Below these beings we have the Old Gods. The ancestral spirits of greenseers (CotF and Human) from as far back as the dawn of time, who connect and view the earth through the Weirwood Trees, like a network of nature that connects us to our ancestors through time.
    Then finally we have the Seven, who are not real. Never were. And all who worship them are praying to emptiness. I personally reckon the seven are why magic faded from the world. Without the devotion and worship of the masses, Eldritch and godly beings couldn't bless their people with abilities and miracles. The old gods live on through the few Weirwood Trees, which allow for skin changers, greenseers and mystical beasts to still be born. But the others require sacrifices to gain magic, which would have diminished since so many pray to the Seven.
