      Well, and may I ask you why those grocery stores write that way? Especially if they are well aware of the technical difference between "fewer" and" less". Similar and thought provoking, aren't they?
      Two spoonfuls is enough. VS are enough
      There's lots of people VS There are lots of people.
      My question is: why despite the obvious logics do you choose the grammatically wrong option? Is there a reason that can explain and even justify the wrong choice? And therefore, is it wrong at all, in the first place?

    • @sammysammyson
      @sammysammyson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's just been used for so long that it's become correct in the sense that it's the preferred usage, regardless of official usage rules. Just reading "10 items or fewer" out loud sounds wrong to be. Even "10 or less items" sounds better than "10 or fewer items."
      This may be regional, but I've never seen "fewer" used.
      Language is dictated by its users, not a grammar book.

      @@sammysammyson and the teachers back at school would tell us "learn this rule!" Wouldn't they? :-) by and large, this question is so exciting. I mean, if you, Sam, say that it's all about frequency, that means that the mistake (when said and written a plethora of times) turns into a norm and therefore, stops being a mistake. Most probably, that's how it works. What do you think?

    • @rvat2003
      @rvat2003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@treadmurktm3791 Yup, that's how it works. Languages evolve. If it didn't we wouldn't be speaking any of the modern languages. That's why modern linguistics is Descriptive. @@iturnoffreplyupdatestorema7216 I can certainly try, absolutely! So, essentially what is important to keep in mind regarding the difference is whether you are trying to show possession or ownership of something or if the item or concept simply exists and you’re trying to mention the existence of it.
      If something, like a cat, belongs to you: *It’s* your cat. In other words, *it is* your cat. The cat is yours, showing possession.
      If you’re just talking about a detail about the cat itself, like the color of their fur: *Its* fur is orange. In this case, saying *It is* fur is orange is incorrect. No possession of the cat is mentioned, just what it looks like.

    The easiest way to remember is that when there are two spellings of a word and one contains ‘s, it is always a contraction conjoining the word and is, the other spelling will be possessive.
    Example:
    It’s - it is
    Its - possessive
    Who’s - who is
    Whose - possessive

    • @chongongus
      @chongongus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This only works with pronouns. For regular nouns generally the possessive will also have 's while the spelling with no apostrophe is used for plurals.
      Example:
      The cat's running away. (cat is - contraction)
      The cat's fur is soft. (possessive)
      The cats are white. (plural)

    But God sees our heart, how huge the sins are, He still loves us unconditionally. That is why He gave His one and only Son Jesus to save us sinners from eternal death in hell.
    Jesus who is God, came to this world, had a poor living instead of rich lifestyle. He came to save us all.
