Re: socks. The best thing i did for myself recently - i bought 5 pairs of the same black socks that i wear to work. I have a couple pairs for the weekend and 3 pairs of "home" socks. That's it. No more thinking if the socks match my outfit because they all do

I have a drawer of socks that haven’t been touched in like 2 years. It’s time to revisit and send them away.

@@73NKZ you'll feel great afterwards. Plus it is a great space saver - my socks now take up less than a shoebox, before that it was a full drawer (i keep my sports socks in a different place with my workout gear though:, but even there i only have 4 pairs now)

Minimising the sock drawer is so satisfying 🙌🏼 If you have any barely or never worn socks that are thermal in some way or just quite thick I know that homeless shelters/charities always want those for the colder months. And any old cotton socks make really good glass cleaners too 🧼✨

I no longer buy synthetic-fiber, made from petrochemicals, fabrics like polyester and acrylic. I do really like the viscose/lyocell fabric family, though, they’re manmade, but from natural plant fibers, so their properties are similar to cotton, silk and linen. This decision was largely based on the terrible skin irritation and overheating they cause me, but it’s an environmentally sound one, too, especially if the more environmentally-friendly, water-saving viscose fabrics are substituted, like lyocell, Eco-Vero, etc.

I really try to steer away from polyester. Its defo a comfort thing but now I'm also more aware of the environmental impact too.

I too mostly avoid synthetic fibers, with the exception of vv small percentages (less than 5%). With jeans, specially, a little bit of elastane sometimes is exactly what I want. However, I do think they are a must for those with heavy, heavy winters. And I also think that a small (key word!) amount of synthetic fiber really increases warmth, and even durability, in some winter pieces. But it's an absolute no in the whole of the other three seasons for me.

So agree with what you said in this video! As you “mature” you get to know what works and what doesn’t AND I would be a millionaire had I not bought so much cheap jewellery, shoes I couldn’t walk in and one hit wonder clothes!
My wardrobe is now a healthy looking capsule of natural fibres and neutral tones that are easy to mix and match. My bags are beautiful, understated and quality along with my shoes, boots and trainers. I feel comfortable and can I say “classy” in my clothes and it’s so easy to get dressed now, even when I’m in a rush! Your channel is so informative, and I just adjust the items you talk about to meet my wallet. Sorted! X

    I no longer buy
    • Shorts! For me they are uncomfortable and very unflattering.
    • Black clothing unless for work. I am happy looking like a picnic princess in my florals 😂
    • Streetwear . I am not cool enough and never will be.
    • Also new occasion wear
    • New leather for ethical reasons
    • Anything that’s too small, I just buy a bigger size
    • Anything I don’t see having amazing cost per wear
I love some of these items on other people but they just don’t work for me, my style & body type
Also I love hanging out with Emma on a Sunday morning 💚

Hi Emma! I can only suggest possibly renting a dress for a special occasion, such a a wedding. etc. We have gorgeous rental shops which accommodate these special events.

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962
    @kimberlyperrotis8962 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

I wore my wedding “going away” dress (1986) afterward for about 8-9 years to every special occasion. Then came the idea that a new dress was needed for every occasion, as fast-fashion began to grow. It just didn’t occur to us then we “shouldn’t be seen in the same dress twice” for occasions, the thinking was so different then and clothes were kept a lot longer.

Agree on all points! I hadn’t gotten as far as you on the going out wear though. Was going to a restaurant yesterday evening (I’m 40 and I don’t normally go out) When getting dressed I panicked and started crying because my wardrobe only consist of day to day wear. In my head I had to find something super fancy, to match all the gorgeous people at the restaurant. Ended up wearing black everyday trousers and black vest with a beige blazer. When I watched you talking about your experience at the hen do, I felt so happy and relieved. Love that black cos dress! Will now never be ashamed of what i wear to a restaurant ever again♥️♥️♥️ Lots of love

Sometimes in a shop I still have a 'magpie' moment when see sparkly Jewellery or a colourful piece of clothing, but before buying I now stand back and think what it would go with in my existing wardrobe or if it is made of cheap materials, and much better at putting it back these days! Thanks for another great video. You have been my hero in terms of style. I too love neutrals, black especially, and white with black especially in the summertime. But after watching so many influencers I thought I should wear more color. But I only like color in little bits like in accessories. I also like them so muted that look almost like no color. For example I wear a dark green or dark wine cashmere turtleneck in the winter, and I do love a red bag or a red dress. In terms of color that is my go to. I also had to stop and not get swayed by what I see. I realize it’s OK to like some thing other people but I don’t need to wear it myself. I always look forward to your videos because they help me accept myself.

"Leather jackets" made half of my wardrobe 5-6 years ago (I had two identical ones, in different colours, from forever 21 at one point). I must say that discovering your channel in 2018 was a style-saver. I've always loved blazers but would stay away from them because I thought they were too dressy, too elegant for every day. The same goes for shirts. And wearing denim "too often". Turns out you can wear whatever the hell you want as long as you feel good in it. So, thank you for all you do in this space and on Instagram.

I am totally with you on the High Heels. I used to run through airports in high heeled strappy sandals, and I am not sure what I was thinking. I believe it was age appropriate (yup in my 20s, and early 30s); these days I am all about flats and comfort. 🙏 I am also with you not buying “new” dresses for occasions, and instead opt for “new to me”. Impractical bags are sooo annoying to me. I think impractical bags are another age appropriate thing for me. I used to only need to have keys, lipstick, and wallet in my bags; but now my keys are a huge lump because of the gigantic key fobs and I need to fit my meds, reading glasses, sun glasses with prescription lens, hand sanitizers, and my hubby’s stuff cuz he can’t fit it in his pockets 🤷🏻‍♀️. Glad to see I’m not alone though 😉

    loved this!!! mine are:
    - denim, especially denim shorts! Too uncomfortable for me, I have 2 pairs that i wear when the time is right but i'm not buying anymore
    - statement coats: i wear mostly black so i used to like a statement coat (teddy, faux fur, huge puffers etc) but it's just not something that gets worn that much in the end
-socks: you actually don't need that many at all haha
-clutch bags: how are we supposed to hold those things in our hands the whole time omg
-first hand occasion wear: fully agree with everything you mentioned!!
    - high heels (like the thin ones): I live in Ghent, Belgium and all the roads are made of cobblestones, so heels are a no go
-anything brightly coloured, patterned or trendy basically too

I am in agreement with you, I have reduced the colors in my closet to black, white, cream, navy and blue denim of various shades, that covers bottoms, tops, jackets and etc. every so often I try a gray, or a pattern, but really it pays to stick to your usual colors. i got a mustard yellow print dress in the spring, but I've only worn it once. Of course covid has dramatically reduced the opportunities to dress and go anywhere. Love your channel.

I don't buy faux leather shoes unless it's open toed shoes but even then meh.
Once I realised leather shoes can get rained on and not stink the house out when you take them off I started looking into breathability and have never gotten a closed toe synthetic shoe (or synthetic lined) since then

i’m in my early 20s and yet i relate so well, no more bright printed polyester play suits for me 😅 i’m way more into neutrals and versatile pieces. currently in the process of shipping more sustainably and less in quantity with higher quality (difficult but budgeting helps!), supporting local brands.

I couldn’t agree more on cheap jewelry! I never wear it, especially earrings cause they always irritate my skin. Love Mejuri for their 14k options! I haven’t taken my earrings out in months, they are fantastic! Also, hands down the thing I’ve ditched the most in recent years in heels! Life is better when you’re comfortable!

Great tips… I pretty much follow all of them (now that I’m 47). I really enjoyed the anecdotes that went along with the tips. I stick to solid neutral colors, stripes, and “classic timeless” pieces. Haven’t worn a pair of heels in about a year and a half 😱, I avoid trends, and only buy jewelry that has a more “timeless” feel and quality rather than “statement” pieces that I will likely mock myself for wearing 5 years later lol (omg those bauble necklaces we wore about 10 - 12 years ago were ridiculous!!! Lol) oh, I also don’t buy clothe/shoes/bags that don’t actually fit into my current lifestyle. I don’t buy things for my “fantasy life”.

I switched to barefoot shoes which are even more comfortable and healthier than sneakers are 🙂 barefoot shoes dont mean you dont wear socks ;) they are more spacious at the toes and have thin soles. you dont have to look sporty with them all the time, there are brands with casual and chic shoes as well🌼

I get so excited by a new pair of smart wool socks.
I grew up in Canada and we used the term going out out. As a teenager it felt like you needed a top from Guess to go out out, like would it even be allowed to wear something more modest and elegant like a midi dress? Lol... and now those clubs are my personal hell.
I am really loving your general emphasis on minimal branding.

Thank you for this terrific video. I have to say I agree with every point you made with the exception of colour even though I agree with your colour palette choice for you. Like many women, I stopped colouring my hair, I used to have blonde highlights done. I am 65 and I have surprisingly very little white hair but I need to wear some colour. My hair is brown, my eyes are brown, my skin pale, you get the picture. On going out out clothes, I looked into renting a gown for a very fancy wedding last year, unfortunately I didn’t end up going to the wedding because of COVID. However the gown I was going to wear was beautiful, classy, something I would not have been able to afford to buy new. I thought the idea of renting a designer dress a clever idea. Men rent tuxedos women should be able to rent gowns.

Enjoyed this video. Same age as you, I love your style. I think it’s an age thing, once turned 30, I realise I no longer buy cheap jewellery, but would rather spend more on some designer brand that last, and start wearing the solid gold necklace that my mum gave me years ago! I also realised I no longer buy mini dress or any skirt that above my knees. The other change I realised was I no longer like fitted/tailored blazer. Even I’m normally uk size 6, but I prefer wearing a size 8 boxy blazer, just more comfortable! Heals is another thing I stopped buying. I don’t wear heals to work, normally just loafer or other flat shoes.

Although I was in my 20's in the 80's, I was never a fan of the aggressive fashion of that era. I was a serious person, with a serious career, and serious wardrobe: suits, pumps, and square bags. When I retired a few years ago, I sold and donated all those suits, pumps and square bags, and have been working on evolving my style in a more relaxed and fun way, while keeping the essence. From experience I will venture to make 3 predictions of additional changes Emma and her followers will make: 1. No uncomfortable footwear. Not just high heels, but no boots that you have to struggle in & out of, no overly strappy sandals, nothing that scars your feet. As you get older, it's really important to keep your feet healthy and not cripple yourself. 2. No or minimal logos. Emma's already there. To me, a big logo is a neon sign that you hang around your neck blinking "I Have Good Taste". 3. Hanging onto well designed and crafted pieces when they go out of style, knowing from perspective that they'll come back. I still have the MaxMara swing coat and Gucci bamboo bucket purse I bought in 1999, and the Givenchy Nightingale from its first season. Thanks for your insight and education!

Can't agree with you more. However, I'm still partial to heels, even though I'm waaaaaayyyy past 30. I never liked big prints or anything with words on them, or fluffy slippers... even through my teenage years. Remain classic and classy I would say. Your style has changed so much! I was wondering if you would go back to all brown hair like in some of your old pictures. One thing I have stopped purchasing though is colorful makeup. Now, I stick to good skincare and a neutral color for eyes and lips. I don't have 10 eyeshadow palettes or a couple of dozens lipsticks. Stick to what works best and use it to the end.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. 💖💖💖

Kia ora E, you raise a good point. Having just celebrated by 60th birthday, I am struggling with what is too girlie to wear these days. Is a dress with a ruffle sleeve too "young" etc.? I'd love you opinion or video on options as we evolve :-)

    • @vecarter569
      @vecarter569 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@Chrissen Gemmill Wear whatever you like. Like is too short and precious (especially in these Covid times) - so embrace what brings you joy & happiness...whether it is ruffles on the sleeves, ruffles down the center of blouses, ruffles on the bottoms of skirts, or ruffled scarf, bag, or shoe decor. Same for polka dots, stripes, color, etc. Wear them joyously and adjust to the extreme or conservativeness of however you want to wear it (bold or subtle). ❤
Also, Trinny Woodall, Busbee Style, Fashion Style & Edit, and other 45/50 yr old+ vloggers...all advise you can wear most trends, colors, or fashion in general - but cater it to fit your age, comfort, lifestyle. See their channels as well for inspiration on how to wear fashion any age.

I follow the same principles as you (I have mainly the same style as you). The only difference is I play with custom jewellery (especially necklaces). I find second hand good quality necklaces and wear them as is or I deconstruct them (take the chain or a pendant out) and mix them with more "classic" pieces for a more unique look. I like to "spice" my basic classic looks with a bit of ethnic or artsy or boho touch...

🤣 Great with my cuppa in bed this morning - thanks Emma! I’m not as ‘neutral’ as you but I’m definitely shifting away from too loud a print or anything I think will go out of fashion very quickly! I also look at every single label now and try my very best to go for cotton, linen, tensel or that newish alternative to viscose ‘Lenzing Evereco’ (sorry if spelt wrong!). I am so much more environmentally aware now (44) than I used to be. I agree with you on everything really only I do wear a bit more colour and print than you but usually fairly subtle or plain colour. Enjoy this rather dull and cool Sunday. 😊👍

Viscose. Lovely fabric to wear and so many benefits, but way too prone to shrinking (even in a cold delicate cycle) for me to risk buying again. So cotton and linen it is! Or even silk which I find is less risky to delicate wash and more justifiable to dry clean if necessary due to the texture.

Agree with all your choices! My wardrobe is now... nude beige creams whites denims navy grey black khaki 🤷‍♀️... at 31 I'd definitely say something changes in how you view clothes/ accessories when you turn 30 🙃...
Bags... the bigger the better for me! Put work documents/ kids bits/ study notes/ first aid kit/ trainers/ snacks... etc All inside! That's my kind of bag! Could you possibly do a review on depeche bags and wanderers travel bags please?
And do I know the topshop jewellery section!! And Aldo jewellery... I was so bad collecting all different pieces of jewellery from these 2 places... now I don't wear any of those bits! Stick to my everyday gold necklace and anklets! (Topshop Oxford st has closed)

Love the insights so much Emma. I think it's important to note that "one hit wonders" don't really have to be one hit and a lot of them turn into that because so many influencers or fashion powers at be shame others for still wearing things that were once trendy. We should be careful of calling out pieces that way because everyone's style is different. I do love seeing how much your style has changed and it's funny because as I approach my 30's I'm seeing my style go in the opposite direction. Like I was buying neutrals and stuff but I'm finding my true style is way more colorful and more prints but still in a minimal way.

Oh I 100% agree and I believe I mention the same point in the video. Something which is a one hit wonder for one person, will become a wardrobe staple for another. I changed a lot after getting 30. Now I am 34, and my wardrobe doesn’t have also almost no prints, maybe some stripes, some small flowers on a black background, neutral colours mainly. I guess the change happened when I wanted to get out of that need to buy new clothes every season , so I went more minimal and practical way. So true, Emma. I was never a brown/beige color girl, I would wear black, grey, white, but never the taupe like colors. Also I had patterns and prints to choose from. But as I turned 30, I couldn't stand full on prints and colorful clothings, and all of a sudden my aura changed and brown/beige suits me so so well. I think it has to do with age and mentality that comes with that age.

Some people have commented they don’t like cheap skin care. Well I love Olay beauty fluid sensitive which is less than £5.00. One of the few lotions that doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. It absorbs well & is not greasy/oily. Does it work? Many have asked what I use since they don’t believe my age so I would say yes. If you live close to the coast a touch of Nivea once in a while moisturises well too. Vaseline on lips. Coconut oil/olive oil on body while in bath. Revlon used to do a honey body lotion that I used for years but no more sadly. Yves Rocher body washes are hard to come by now so I substitute with Sanex or Balmonds alternatively. When my hands are dry I use a more expensive treatment, Skin Salvation by Balmonds at night or a smear during the day. Especially good if you have e skin problems. You don’t need to buy expensive stuff to keep your skin healthy.
I have the same philosophy as you on clothes & like natural fabrics where possible & neutrals but I like polka dots on t shirts as well as stripes. I do like scarves that can be colourful & patterned but I find they are more muted as I have got older & I don’t buy so much nowadays as I don’t go out, out! I don’t use handbags (last time was for a funeral) so much but have totes & cross over bags that suit my lifestyle more. My pet gripe is make up. Make up should enhance beauty not try & recreate a clowns face. People just don’t look natural with dark painted brows & lipstick beyond the lip line & yellow skin, usually with a different coloured neck! Red cheeks & eye shadow not blended in in neon colours. A light touch always looks better, especially during the day. If you have spots avoid make up on your face until it clears & clean face with rose water & moisturise & don’t pick, prod, squeeze or scratch spots or they will scar! Be gentle.
