Never point your boom mic to the mouth. Always point to the sternum/chest at a 45 degree angle from above. If the subject moves and it's pointed to the mouth, if they lean forward you'll risk changes in the audio or losing it all-together. Many other Netflix worthy documentarians will agree on this setup.
I always look forward to your videos man. Another one full of great advice.
Good work like always 👍🏾 I like the behind scenes of how the lighting was set up, I have learned a lot from you. Thank you 🙏🏾
Great walkthrough. I always find it fascinating how other ppl do these thing. I usually have super small spaces to workwith so i can rarely follow your general guide on background separation separation and all but it’s still fascinating to watch (when I’m on bigger/actual sets I’m a sound mixer so i don’t get to play around with the picture much)
I was just looking for a video like this, very helpful bro! Thank you, will def. be implementing these tips!
if anyone wondering first background music is :
Uncovered By Joseph William Morgan
Solid breakdown, thank you for the insights!
Thank you for this breakdown. Learnt a lot.
❤❤❤nice job❤❤❤
Great walk through Alex, as always! Keep it up. Looking forward to your documentary course.
Thank you brother and we are working hard on it.
I would love to hear what you hope to get out of this course. I really want to make this some thing that is useful for the Documentary filmmaking community.
Insightful, thank you.
Alex dropping the 💥💥 yet again! Thanks, man! Just got commissioned for a documentary next year and I couldn't be more stoked!
Thanks Mike🙏🏻
Very informative content , Thanks for the brake down.
Another great video Alex. Insightful and straight to the point! Thanks.
Thanks Rob! we got the full BTS of how we made this Doc coming soon
Super excited for your documentary course.
Thanks Malcolm. I can’t wait to release it🙌🏻
Brilliant video again Alex! Thank you :-)
Thanks Kyle! I appreciate it brother
Perfect Alex 👏 I have to make 2 interviews for my next docu soon 😅 🎥 best cinematic greetings from germany
Good luck on your project brother
I would like a week on work with your team😮
Go watch the Full Documentary!! OUT NOW🔥🔥🐐
🙏🏻🤘🏻
Watched the whole video then realised you only had 10k subs 😲
Amazing video, great tutorial, exited to check out the course.👏
Thanks brother I appreciate that🙌🏻
Awesome content as always Alex, I always learn something! Will keep an eye out for the course. How is shooting interviews with manual focus only on the Blackmagic cameras? Im considering BM as an eco system for video. Currently do a lot of photography on Canon mirrorless cameras. But growing the video side of my business and need some proper video first cameras.
I’m a huge fan of BM for the quality and the price! I think they’re great cameras
I would like to know why she's at the left of the frame at 2:19 and not in the right. (Giving her more room for her eye line and direction.) I've seen this more over the last year and am trying to come to terms or understand why.
What’s up Devin, I don’t have a real answer for this other than my goal at some points were to create a little more tension with some shots and I really felt like this was a cool angle that just felt good in the moment.
ur the beast brother
Thanks brother
Thanks for the info, how did you get good audio in the house without bad reverb or echo, also do you turn the air conditioner off while recording audio for your interviews?
Good questions if you can shut off the AC, you definitely should, and as long as the microphone is really close to your subject, you shouldn’t have an issue, especially with all the AI software out these days. With a decent shock on microphone, you should be good to go.
Where can we see this entire documentary pls ? On TH-cam ?
On my channel

@@Alexzarfatifilms thanks a lot. You’re always making a great job !!
Are the GVM really good. For me it’s either the forza 500/ 300 or GVM 300/500/650 or 700. Thoughts. I have the godox 200vl and the falcon eyes matte box
Personally, I like them, but I’ve never used the Nanlight Forza so hard for me to tell you which one to buy but I definitely stand behind the 650 B I’ve been using it for a few months now and it’s been great for me.
🔥🔥🔥
What was the focal length of the 2nd camera angle?
50mm
Those two fill lights kill the look , it looked great before they came into play . I would always try to shoot into a corner too , flat onto that huge window is asking for trouble I think.
New challenge: what if I have to interview 3 people? 😆
Fck Netflix Alex! Better show a tutorial how you shoot and edit your talking head videos like this one! Theeese are amaaaaaazing!!!!!!!!!!
Better than Netflix in any way
lol thank you brother and don’t worry it’s coming 😉

Lighting was too flat.
That’s the look we were going for. We wanted it to be a evenly lit and feel almost corporate because she’s a lawyer
@Alexzarfatifims Don’t entertain trolls
He literally said he’s mimicking day light what part of the world now a sunny day light isn’t flat ?
That’s what he mentioned about the negative fill not being able to be brought in closer. Could have been possible to bring in a 12x12 butterfly frame with neg fill or multiple floppy’s lined up to wrap around that side to really cut down on the spill along with laying down duvetyn on the ground You can go absolutely crazy to control the light BUT how much work and resources and time is really worth is for a tiny difference that’s really more of an aesthetic difference than a technically correct difference. This works just fine. They also technically could have put ND on the back window and then the light would have been able to be more directional while still maintaining levels with the neg fill he used here because wouldn’t be fighting against the sun. BUT again really not worth it in this case it’s a documentary not a commercial or feature. This looks fine.
Looks flat my guy.
