    What a great performance. Pick Withers is my favorite DS drummer of all time. So in the pocket. He's just killing it here. They all are.

      Yes very much so. Yet by most accounts he just couldn’t put up with the Uber talented ego maniacal Mark Knopfler

    • @mikaylachapman9036
      @mikaylachapman9036 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sammysouth8372 Yeah, every interview I've seen, Knopfler was, and still is, extraordinarily humble. In John Illsley's autobiography, he records that Pick left DS for two main reasons: 1. The touring, playing back-to-back shows was taking a toll on his body and he felt like the fatigue was too much and 2. He wanted to experiment with other styles of music.
      Mark has always been anything but egotistical, he always treated his band mates with the utmost respect.

    • @sammysouth8372

      @@mikaylachapman9036 You want to believe I'm wrong about MK because Illsley said so? You bought that line. Look, truth is I don't really know and you don't really know but I've watched PW on this short clip and I get the sense that he wasn't happy with the way he was being treated in the band. Now, everyone knows that DS were MK's baby. So who's the band that was mistreating him? DK? JI? I kinda doubt it. Still for all I know MK is a super nice guy like you say.

      @@sammysouth8372 You're right, he could have left for a number of reasons, honestly. All I know is that after he left, honestly, it felt like something was missing from the DS sound. The groove wasn't the same. BiA and OES were good albums for the most part, but Pick's drumming really helped distinguish them. So it doesn't really matter why left, I guess. I just kinda wish he had stuck around.

      I really like Pick . PICK Was a little TIGHTER TO THE MUSIC. Terry Williams I wouldve said just moves SLIGHTLY ahead overall becausec of ALCHEMY . I find it hard to go past Terry who would be a little more humble . I'm now saying Pick because it was Dire Straits was at their Best with Making Movies and then Telegraph Road Pick was on it tight. ❤.

    He is simply amazing. The relationship between guitar and vocals is just perfect. At times he is playing contrapuntal lines to his vocals. His call and response between vocals and guitar is just seemless! Like, who can play like this?

    This is great. One of my favourite songs of theirs with Romeo and Juliet. I remember coming home from a night shift way back in the day of Music Video Television when I was a poor student. You had to pay for the cable channel but we never had that package so all you got was the sound and a scrambled video signal. Before going to sleep I had the T.V. on and the 2 or 3 videos from this album came on in a row. I think because I was going into that sort of dream state before bed I remember this song and Romeo and Juliet sounding unreal. For whatever reason you could still see a lot of the video although the colors were off. Gave it an ethereal feel. First time I had heard the songs and I will never forget them. They went straight to my heart. Mark's guitar playing so clear and full of feeling just felt like it was crystal clear ....perfect. And the drumming....the drumming so fit the music. I wish this drummer had stayed on.....he added feel to the music and what Mark was playing. Oh well.....the only constant is change but we have videos like this to rekindle old feelings and memories. Thanks for posting!!!! I was able to pay for my University and finish...and I bought the album just after this..still have it!!!!

    This is a band that is serious about making great music. The whole 3 people playing the keyboards at the start is something no one would do today - but I loved that, They knew how they wanted the gig to sound and made it happen. You can already hear Knofler's signature licks being formed. Beautiful.
    I should add that I saw them twice - Knebworth Silver Clef and Woburn Abbey. No disappointment there.

    • @amerocker
      @amerocker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My know-it-all brother-in-law heard me listening to "Sultans of Swing" on the radio in 1978. I was 15 and really liked the then new song. He critisized me and American teenagers for liking that song as he said it would be their only hit song and everything else on the first record was filler. What a fool he was. He eventually realized how talented Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits is. He never apologized to me though. Wanker.

    • @mikaylachapman9036
      @mikaylachapman9036 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amerocker I'm guessing he never really listened to the first record, then. Every song from that is amazing, Down to the Waterline, In The Gallery, Lions, Wild West End... I could go on, DS was anything but boring radio rock. They were true artists, who made songs that speak directly to the soul.

      In my opinion, the best rhythm guitarist they ever had. It's sad that he left just before they made Brothers in Arms. Nothing against Jack Sonni who replaced him, but Hal Lindes was a guitar virtuoso in his own right. Watch the video of "Two Young Lovers" from Alchemy Live; he really shines there.
      (And, OK, i also just really like looking at him. Most attractive Dire Straits member of all times, although I feel very disloyal thinking this.)
