Neither ETIAS nor ESTA are visas. ESTIA is the European equivalent to the American ESTA (which has been in place for EU travelers for years). They are some kind of on-line border pre-checks before departure that apply to countries under visa waiver agreements, such as the EU and the US. I've worked at a consular section in the past and you can believe me, the procedure to obtain a visa is way more difficult than the ESTIA or ESTA procedures.

@@shadowbeast2276 Your ignorence comes from your statement: "But im sure the US will fo the same" and "REVENUE GENERATION". Obviously not knowing that US has done this for 14 years for all tourists arriving in US. So, as an American citizen, I find it appropriate that the rest of the world do the same against US tourists.

I flew to Australia at least 12 times and my visa stamp was done at my departing US airport because it was included to my airline ticket purchase. Our trip to UK required no visa that I was aware of since the airline took care of it. But if the orange man was still president and these is implemented, he would charge ten times what the EU charges. Like when the Chinese added a 25% tariff on US goods. Our beloved president then raised tariffs on Chinese goods from 2% to 25%. Europe will reap what they have sown. Maybe be we should stop helping Ukraine and let the Russians roll to the beaches of Dunkirk again. That whole EU state is just a couple years from total anarchy. Why be an annoyance to the only superpower on their side? It’s not the money aspect, it’s them trying to regain the respect when the Brits left the EU and made them look like failed states. Look at France. Whatta mess

      1) Trump WAS in charge when Europe passed the legislation that created the ETIAS system.
      2) The US is the one reaping what it has sown. Despite protests from many of its allies that have visa waiver agreements with the US, the US implemented their electronic travel authorization ESTA in 2009, which charges travelers from those countries $21 and requires pre-registration to enter the US, while US travelers could enter those countries with no fee and no pre-authorization. The US was the one trying to pull a fast one by saying "but it's not a visa so it's totally OK for us to do this but you should still take our citizens visa-free." I'm honestly surprised that it's taken the EU this long to retaliate.
