    I've been sewing since I was nine years old...a loooong time. I could not do a better job than you have done; the stays look great!

    It's the first time in a long time I've seen someone actually explain how to make a corset. It's very beautiful! Congratulations dear, thanks!

    You’re literally my new favorite person.
    I JUST ordered these patterns, and then searched and found you making EXACTLY what I want to do.
    So, here we go!

      Yay I’m so glad the hear that ☺️, I was so bummed when I couldn’t find anyone who had made a video for McCall 7735. Hope my videos help a bit!

      And Sew it Begins... They have helped immensely! I am thoroughly impressed with your attention to detail and proper finishing. I am (regrettably) a notorious corner cutter, but I strive to finish things properly, and not get lazy! Lol!

      I also found the costube community from spiraling one night with Bernadette and Cathy. I’m also super into the Victorian life, so I found them one night.
      I also am using a vintage Singer 66 treadle machine that’s over a century old. So that’ll be another layer of challenge. It does not back stitch or zig zag, but it makes the most satisfying ASMR clackity clacking ever. (I own an electric machine, and may be forced to resort to it for this project, but am resisting modern conveniences!!!)

    i WISH i had your patience and ambition to make my own. as a woman with absurd measurements i.e. a very long torso [im6'2] with AA or A cup bust, i gave up buying corsets/stays a long time ago as they can be quite expensive.
    congrats, it looks great, you wear it well.

    I've made these stays about three times now and I do agree.. the armpits are too high. This is interesting because I just thought it was me but now I realize it was probably just the pattern! ❤️ great video!

    • @AndSewitBegins
      @AndSewitBegins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Follow Your Inner Doll glad to know I’m not the only one with that issue! Hopefully the fix isn’t too bad and I can unpick the binding over the armpits, trim it down, and reattach the binding

    • @Ellaodi
      @Ellaodi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I plan to wear mine under modern clothes so my straps will have eyelets at the back to be removable, and the bottom is lengthened to make a smoother silhouette. Also made the front come up higher so the armpit could stay in the right place without spillage

  • @melanialupu

    They stays look great! It might have been easier to just hand sew that bias tape, because it looked so fiddly to do on the machine and it still took a long time. I'm also hoping to make some 18th century stays, but I'm stuck doing alterations now on my mockup and not sure how to proceed. I'm really enjoying watching other people making some and being grownups about finishing projects. :D

    • @AndSewitBegins
      @AndSewitBegins  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks 😊 I probably could have hand sewed the binding in the same amount of time but it would have been much messier, and I was so impatient to finish this video that I didn’t include the lining of them. I finally did that a couple of days ago

      I highly recommend watching Cynthia's (RedThreaded) tutorial on machine binding tabs! I did a self challenge of making one of her patterns using only materials on hand and machine sewing the ENTIRE thing. The tutorial seriously helped a lot!

    Sophie, what an awesome job you did for as a beginning seamstress...! Here is a trick/tip for you...get glass headed pins for when you are ironing, they will not melt, like the quilters pins will. :)

    They look nice! The main thing is they should feel COMFORTABLE when you wear them. There should be no pain. I have made about 15 different 18th Century stays, and it can still be a struggle. Honestly, the BEST stays pattern I have ever worked with, including my own self drafted ones, are RedThreaded. So easy to mock up and put together. If you ever venture down this rabbit hole again, try her patterns!

    • @AndSewitBegins
      @AndSewitBegins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vanessa Haugen Thanks for the tip 😊 When I was first deciding to do this project I almost just bought some stays from red threaded, but decided I wanted to sew them myself. I didn’t realize I could just buy the pattern!

  • @penelope-oe2vr
    @penelope-oe2vr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    These turned out very very pretty. You could cut your tabs higher around that waist bit, and then they won't bother you when you sit. People don't realize how important the placement of those tab slots are to comfort in stays. Very important

    • @AndSewitBegins
      @AndSewitBegins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The work ok enough that I don’t feel like re binding the tabs cause it takes so much work, I’ll just fix it when I make another pair which feels inevitable 😂

    • @penelope-oe2vr
      @penelope-oe2vr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndSewitBegins im going to make myself a pair, drafting them now. To use instead of a brace for my mid section. They gave me a ugly back brace that I really need abdominal support. Stays will do the job better. When you do your first mock up, trace over your hip bones and make all of your tabs slits above that line. I'm a dork and research way way too much before I do things. Thank you for the opportunity to watch your process it helps me! Yes, I'm certain I will make many pairs. They're just so pretty! I'm disabled so i can wear what I want now. And I shall. Take care! 💙

    I just heard of Rigilene boning, you can sew right through it and that would solve your binding problems at the ends. And as they are light and flexible would work very well for this type of 18th century stays which were often a mixture of cords and wood and reeds, even twisted paper has been seen in extant garments of this kind. I have found them on Amazon over here in the UK quite reasonably priced so I am sure you'd be able to find hem over the pond where you are too.

    • @creativemakeup
      @creativemakeup 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ci, The thing about Rigilene boning is that once you have a bend in it, it never goes away. I have used it and really hated it. Other very experienced renaissance seamstresses have all said to me that for the purpose of using it for bodice, stays and other similar clothing items that it had bent in the channels and became very uncomfortable.

    If you hand running stitche the seams between panels, it will be a lot stronger and you won't need the extra ribbon on the seams, if you want a cleaner look.

    Using a curved needle would have made the job easier for future attempts on the straight tapes. I am glad you took the time to rip,out the binding tape sometimes it’s all you can do . Good trick for turning items right side out use a good old fashion heavy wooden spoon the handle is nice a long if you use a jam making wooden spoon 😹😹 that’s what I use 😊😊
    😹😹😹😹I love all the tib bits on how you filmed it made it fun to watch never under estimate the use of odd shaped items to make a tripod 😹😹😹😹

    A lot of ppl don't fully close their stays, and it's actually recommended to not have them fully close if you want them to be really adjustable. I think the back of your stays look a little long. Not just the tabs, but the fit seems a bit long waisted in the back (and ppl are often shorter waisted in back than in front). If you shorten that waist, it should be more comfortable to sit down

    did i miss the lining part? i saw some seams on the inside.. shouldn't they be covered up? sorry for asking i just watched so many tutorials that I'm a bit confused

    • @AndSewitBegins
      @AndSewitBegins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angelika5378 you are correct, the lining part isn’t in this video because I procrastinated for weeks hand sewing it in. Basically you just recut out the pattern pieces sew them together and baste it on the inside with the raw edges turned in. On my Instagram AndSewitBegins_ you can see a picture with the lining pinned in

      I also have barely any experience apart from what I’ve made on this channel, and I tallied up 56 hours to finish the stays (not including the mock up which I made in a day) Good luck on your historical undies, I had so much fun making them ☺️

      Annie Dean I calculated it out to roughly 56 hours to complete them. It might sound like a lot but if you break it up into a few hours at a time it will be done in a couple weeks 🥳 You got this!
