  • Today is the day that Tessie officially got her AAC device. Maggie's only arrived a week ago, but we knew that it was important that Tessie got hers as well and it finally happened and Tess is definitely excited about it. All sorts of communication doors are opening around here!
Welcome to Autmazing! We talk a lot about autism around here because we are a family with five kids and a mom and dad who are autistic and we believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. We also post videos daily (or almost daily), about topics that we feel are important and sometimes there's a vlog thrown in too. We think it's important to see that being autistic is just that- another way of being human. You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the nearby city that Paul works in.
We are a family of 7, with a Mom named Cammie and a Dad named Paul. Sadie is 12, Maggie is 10, Patrick is 8, James is 6, and Tessie is now 4!

It's so great that they both have their own talkers now, and that Tessie's making long sentences like fridge magnets (I remember seeing those once, but not in a while) And it was cool seeing James cook, he was so focused.

Sadie looks so tall next to the boys! It's so cool you can just buy an ipad and put talking apps on there. I hope it helps Tessie to talk more 😄

Yeah it’s also pretty cool that you can lock it to the screen so it doesn’t just turn into a toy for her

Sorry if this is an uncomfortable question, but I was wondering how does Sadie feel about not being able to have a “typical” sister relationship with her close in age sister, Maggie? When I saw her looking at Patrick and James interact together I couldn’t help but wonder if she sometimes wishes she could have that with Maggie. I’m sure they have their own relationship in their own way but i was wondering about this specifically.
I ask because I have a child that sometimes resents her autistic sibling because she can’t have a “normal” playmate or sisterly relationship and was wondering if this was something Sadie maybe experiences too and how do you deal with it.

I felt that way with my autistic brother for years but then I realized that having any relationship with him is better then none and no I would not feel uncomfortable if you asked me that specifically

      Sadie is Autistic too.

@@Patricia-li8bh I do know Sadie is autistic too. But autism is a spectrum and her and Maggie are at different ranges of the spectrum. I’m autistic as well as two of my children. One of my autistic children is non-verbal with developmental delays and the other (like me) is more like what used to be diagnosed as Aspergers.

This is a ten inch kindle from Amazon with a case we also found by searching for a ten inch kindle case for kids on Amazon. You can also get a kids kindle that has the case and I think a years membership of kids content, but since we already have the membership from another kindle we purchased, we went with a regular one and just keep it signed in to the kid’s app. I hope that helps.

Which age your boys start to say words? And which age they start to tolk?

James was pretty much right on track, he's our only kid without a speech delay, even though he had all sorts of large motor delays. Patch started speech when he was little, I think around his second birthday. He didn't have any huge red flags in terms of language development though, unlike our girls. I can't remember exactly when he started to speak, but it wasn't super delayed like the girls. He had some words by the time he was two, unlike his sisters and definitely was talking by the time he was three.
James was a chatterbox by the time he was three and was using huge words when we were in IEP meetings for his older siblings so that everyone was giving each other surprised looks because he'd just said something that made him sound like a mini adult.
