    Just picked up the a6400 and decided to go with the Sony 18mm-105 f4 w/ OSS. It’s a tighter shot when vlogging, but the extra focal length for b roll shots makes up for it. Having an ultra wide focal length is awesome but to start out with and keep it budget friendly, it’s best to go with multiple purpose lens. Think Media rocks ! Love the channel ! Happy shooting everyone ! 📸🎥

    Got my a6400 with the kit lens for $998 from B&H about 2 months ago, LOVE IT! That Sigma lens will probably be my next lens since most of the time, my vlogs are at night since I work all day :O Thanks for this Sean!

    Not for vlogging, but for my workshop videos I use the E 35 mm F1.8 OSS
    . Some of the shots can be a little tight in my workshop but I love the depth of field it provides.

    I would take the 16-50 kit lens. More versatility by being able to go out to 50mm, and also wide enough at 16mm for some vlogging content. The f3.5 aperture isn’t the best but Sony cameras are pretty good in low light so you should be able to push the ISO a bit.

    Thanks Sean, always a good round up. I've been using the 18-105 F4 lens - great lens, reasonable background blur when used correctly, only downside is it is quite big and a tight angle for when out and about vlogging - though have done this fine anyhow. Fine for my indoor review videos though. Defo got my eye on the expensive 10-18mm next

  • @danielgriffithofficial

    I’ve wanted that Sigma 16mm since the day I heard about it. I got the 30mm f1.4 from Sigma about two months ago and it’s my absolute favourite lens.
    Saving for this one atm.

    • @blackentrepreneur244
      @blackentrepreneur244 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just picked up a 6400 body only. Should I just purchase the 16mm 1.4 over the kit lens?

    • @danielgriffithofficial
      @danielgriffithofficial 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@blackentrepreneur244 I honestly feel like I don't have the know-how to say definitively. I only recently picked up photography as a hobby. I use my camera predominantly for shooting song covers. So the 30mm focal length is perfect for me. I also occasionally do portrait photography with my friends so I wanted something with a shallower depth of field than the kit lens.
      However, I can't knock the kit lens at all. I got it bundled with the camera and I still use it when I'm roaming about to take pictures of random things. The ability to zoom is something I always miss when I leave home with the prime lens only. The crop-factor on the 30mm makes framing a little tight when you don't have room to step back.
      I recommend checking out Jason Vong's channel. He goes through these lenses as well and from the pros and cons of each of these videos, you could choose the one that would best fit into your workflow.

  • @MaxwellStarr
    @MaxwellStarr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't forget the 16-70/4 Zeiss. It's stablized, has the 16mm of the kit lens but also a 24-105 full frame equivalent and constant f4 so you can switch in a hurry to portrait length shots with reasonably shallow DOF. Plus 55mm filter thread is easy to find ND filters and polarizers for. Plus they can be had for reasonably cheap if bought used.

    • @Tennisfiles
      @Tennisfiles 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about the a6400 do you envy? I'm on the fence between the m50 and a6400. Thanks!

    • @snowwalker9999
      @snowwalker9999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tennisfiles Good question. If your goal is to do more professional video, I would get the a6400. It comes with more video-centric lenses vs EF-M lenses which are more basic. However, if you have good skills you could do professional work with M50 also. I personally do not like the flip out screen. I think flip up is better but it's just a personal preference. a6400 has 120fps at 1080, M50 does not. For photography, both are equally good and M50 is way cheaper. Neither one has IBIS but a6400 has more weather sealing than M50 which is useful for landscape and outdoor photo or video. I would try both before making the decision.

    I've vlogged with a 30mm Sigma 1.4 before and it came out pretty good, but it did require me to extend my arm and the joby as far as it could go to get the equivalent of what would be a 16mm lens. I have the 16mm Sony 2.8, which is flat and super easy to use, I might try it but from what I understand the autofocus on it hunts a lot, which is not great for vlogs.

    Since I own all 3, I'll let you in on a secret. The Sigma is WAY better than the Sony 16-50 and Sony 10-18. Bokeh is amazing, and 16mm is fine for vlogs. Also it's super fast and sharp! buy a Crane v2 to pair with it.

    I recently sold my Canon 80D, 10-18, 50mm 1.8, 24mm 2.8, and 55-250mm lenses. I bought the Sony a6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens. I just bought the sigma 16mm 1.4 a couple weeks ago and I haven’t taken it off my camera yet. It’s an amazing lens with so much potential. I plan on buying either the Sony 50mm 1.8 oss lens or the sigma 30mm 1.4 next.

    I have the kit lens and all I can say it's not bad but not great either. The 18-105mm is cool, at higher focal length has some really nice bokeh, but fully open, not good in low light and minimal bokeh. The 50mm f1.8 that I have is insane! All the bokeh and oss and everything, but being such a tight frame, it isn't vlog friendly. B roll though, makes your footage look like pro straight out from the camera. The 10-18 I don't have yet but the only downside to it ia the f4. I have f4 on my 18-105 and it's not fantastic for bokeh or low light. I'd definitely like a faster lens but perfect focal lenght for vlogging + oss... 95% all you'll ever need for vlogging. Tamron does an 11-20mm but has no oss, if you have a gimbal, that would be great at f2.8, as well as the 16mm sigma.
    No oss though means shaky video without a gimbal.

    For me its the Sony 18-105 but its mostly because I'd rather not take more than 1 or 2 lenses with me and I prioritize photo and video quality, so I pack Sony 18-105mm and Sigma 14mm

    Why not the 6600? It has better autofocus and Ibis.

  • @charlespangilinan6351
    @charlespangilinan6351 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    For me, I think the Sigma 16mm f1.4 is the perfect vlogging lens. Yes, that OSS ain't there, but the background blur is crazy, the image quality is absurd, and it's a LOT cheaper than the 10-18mm f4.
    For the general usage, "one lens" to bring though, it would be the Sony 18-105mm f4. It's a constant aperture unlike the 18-135mm, therefore better in low light and DoF control at the tighter FLs. Also, the 18-105mm is a better telephoto lens than the 18-135mm, image quality wise. But if I wouldn't care about lighting and image quality at the long end, I'd go for the extra 30mm zoom range. They're available for practically the same price, so those would be factors to consider for both of them.

    Using a A6500 with 16mm sigma it handles everything. Wanne get some super B-roll? I'll grab my 30mm sigma which is also super for portraits. If I had to choose one, 16mm all the way. With clear Image zoom it can even zoom in with a custom button. Just go get it if you're reading this.

    Not sure if this has been asked, but why the Sigma 16mm with a handheld gimbal? Wouldn't that give you the best of both worlds (minus the ultra wide angel from 10mm).

    I got a Sony a6400 with kit lens 16-50mm and I alaso got a prime lens, the Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS, for my video in my home for tech review etc. Do you think I should have bought the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 instead the Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS?

    Hi Sean, what makes the Sigma 16mm 1.4 so good to use at night? is it the 16mm or the f 1.4? thx

    • @Tennisfiles
      @Tennisfiles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Timo, the f 1.4 let's in way more light that the higher f stop, thus making it better in low light conditions. Cheers!

    I have the 10-18, 18-135, 70-350 and the kit lens. For night I got the 35mm with IBIS and it's amazing but because of the distance you need to take close-ups or get very far from the object. However it's spectacular for portrait. With them I feel covered in all situations but I will give a try to the Sigma for astronomy and interiors if I find a good deal. Even I got the Sony-Zeiss 16-70 but I didn't keep it as my copy didn't make any difference with the 18-135. Congratulations for the video

      Hi! Having trouble with getting a wide enough lens with the kit lens. How do you like your 10-18mm?

    • @homoanalyticus
      @homoanalyticus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TylerMaximus personally, I like it and use it a lot in the mountain and in the city and it's stabilized, although as any zoom lens you should try to avoid the min and max distances (10 and 18, and handle it between 12 and 16mm) for better results. And with F4 it's not the most luminous and I barely get any bokeh, but for the size and polyvalence, if you find a good deal on Black Friday or 2nd hand, it will fit in your camera's arsenal to have you covered in any occasional situation with an acceptable compact size despite being a bit heavy. I got it for 400 USD. Otherwise, if you are an intensive user of wide angle, go for the 12mm Sigma or even make the investment to reduce a lot the size and weight with the 10 or 15mm of Sony. Prime lenses are worth the investment when you use a lot a specific distance. And they are still cheaper than full frame but much lighter. Zoom lenses are intended to get you out of any trouble with acceptable results and they work good enough for me
