Kibbe Body Types | The 13 Types, How To Find Yours & Why It's Helpful

  • I made an updated video on this and consulted experts and it turns out I’m not a soft classic but a flamboyant gamine! Right next to each other so it makes sense :)
Image consultant David Kibbe developed a body typing method that considers more than just our bust, waist and hip measurements to give us 1 of 13 body types. Each type comes with clothing recommendations that are supposed to enhance your unique features rather than camouflage them. Today, I'm sharing an overview of Kibbe's system, how you can figure out which type you are, my own type and how it can be used to enhance your personal style. I hope this is helpful and thanks so much for watching! xx Audrey

I did't like Kibbe's method at first. I found it overwhelming and did't like the recommendations for my body tipe... until I realize I had taken the quizz incorrectly.

@@AlexisTwoLastNames Basically I didn't see and analyze my body in the mirror or with a full front pic. I just worked with the assumptions I had regarding my body in the past, insecurities included.
What made the click on me was a friend of mine, who commented that my face isn't rounded (something I'd been told all my life), but squarish. From there I took a step back and tried to pull the quizz off again letting my predjudices aside.
Sorry for the essay, hope I helped you. Also recommend Aly Art's body comparison videos, they're very helpful.

@@Dan_Chiron OMG THIS!!! Sometimes pulling your hair back and really taking a full body picture with the camera at chest level can really show you everything, the vibe your body gives you. For instance I was debating between soft natural and romantic. I thought my eyes were big or my chin was soft and dainty etc. But then when I see pictures of myself I begin to see the overall picture and how each features look in relation to the rest of my face/my body that's when I began to understand kibbe's method entirely and was able to correctly asses myself. Now I know for a fact that I'm a soft natural as my vertical line is too long for a romantic, pulled back hair really emphasizes the width and weight of my bones too much and makes my head look infinitely smaller. I don't think the test was very helpful at all I think Kibbe was against the tests as well. What helps is understanding what yin and yang features are in terms of bone structure, facial feature, and flesh, and assessing your own. And then check your answers against Kibbe's description for each body type.

I loathed that whole fruit system, I mean who wants to be an APPLE or a PEAR - or any fruit for that matter? :D I also didn't like the way - which you mentioned in the video - that system tells you to hide parts of yourself. I've always had a bit of a belly, but I never felt the need to hide it, definitely not with some huge granny-caftan which ages me 20 years. Now I know I'm a soft natural in the Kibbe system and no longer feel like I look great naked but awful with clothes on. :D I've found the best lines for me and find it incredibly helpful. I also recommend Aly Art and Merriam Style.

When I was in my early 40s a friend and I took a 3 full day course and I’m sure this was a part of it. I can’t begin to tell how much money it’s saved me. I’m petite but have a short neck and this was addressed. I no longer wear turtlenecks and am so much happier. I never felt dressed up in my black silk shirt dress with the pointed collar because it didn’t fit my personality. The collar made it more casual and it wasn’t “me”. These are just a couple of things addressed in the class along with hairstyles, color, body shape, style. That class was one of the best things I have ever done. You could see in pictures of people with similar body shapes and personalities what worked and what didn’t. Thank you for this, Audrey, it was very enlightening. I agree that we should wear what makes us feel good and right, but sometimes what we love isn't flattering on us and we don't know why. This is when this method is helpful.

I've been following Kibbe's system for a while, it's been super helpful! I should mention it's about lines of clothing and the cut and material as it fits on the body. It's not about necessarily the style of the clothing item. That can be anything although most cuts tend to be similar styles.

I assume you have at least pinned it down to 3 types. It's not that much and you can work your way backwards. I was so happy to find my type, that I started to do the tests with my family. My cousin got all answers B, C, D pretty much equally. So that's soft classic, but also some natural? She was the only mystery. We looked through her clothes and indeed a lot of soft classic pieces for her workplace, that she looks amazing in. Than on the other hand she can pull off Boho so well in her casual wardrobe. It must be the essence thing. I remember in Merriam's video she explained how Kate Winslet, a Romantic, can pull off a more structured dress. And in the end it's all about that: you'll find recommendations, but not follow them blindly, build your own style with the tips "as long as I'll be careful not to do this I can do that and still look great"

    • @bodyofhope
      @bodyofhope 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JR-sx3gl I sound like your cousin. My signature style is very flowy boho. I love deep rich jewel tones, not too much pattern for me in clothing.
But I do like a high wasted, well cut long pant. I do fit the classic bc I'm proportionate, slim, but fleshy.
In my office attire, I was never drawn to structured suits or tight fitted dresses. I preferred delicate tops and a well fit flowing or straight pant (like a classic fit).
Of these celebrity images, I'm a cross between Phylicia Rashad and Audrey Hepburn.
Maybe it's the boho and edgy dressed ones who are left baffled lol.

Soft Gamine here! 🙋🏻 It took me a while to find out, but I finally realised why I always look better with short touseled hair, fitted clothes with waist emphasis, colourblocking and medium-weight fabrics. I thought I was a Soft Natural at first, but I would catch myself looking sloppy sometimes. In the end, it was because my skeleton was too small to hold the Natural kind of looks. I looked like I was drowning in my clothes! But now that I'm following the recommendations for SGs, I look put-together, and I feel much better about my body, knowing that the opposites of Yin and Yang parts of my body is what makes my body proportionate as a SG. ✨

  • @bookbutterfly2408

It was pretty easy to figure out that I was a Soft Dramatic, but I mistyped myself as Theatrical Romantic at first until I found out Kibbe doesn't consider long, narrow bones to be "delicate". That's what threw me off on the quiz.
I love this system! I'm a tall woman with an hourglass figure and honestly, almost all style systems I've tried either recommend tight clothing to show off curves (super objectifying and uncomfortable; I also work in finance, so I can't wear stuff like this to work) or colourblocking to look shorter (I don't see anything wrong with my height so I never understood this tip).
Kibbe's system is great because every body type gets a variety of recommendations they can work with!
I usually follow my lines, elongated + narrow + rounded, which still gives me a lot of room to experiment with different styles while still looking put together. Surprisingly, a lot of office wear falls under the SD umbrella which works out amazingly for me, too!

    Hello.
I'm so excited that more people are talking about this body typing system 😊😊. I'm also a soft classic. I took the test whilst watching an AlyArt video. I had to take a picture of myself naked to make it easier for me 😅😄. It's been a interesting journey trying to pinpoint exactly what I liked about my style icons, inspiration pictures and my own taste (more for gamine) then tailor it for my own body type. Lastly for all the classics DO NOT WEAR head to toe natural clothing you will look like a potato!

I took the quiz and fell within the "romantic" type...perhaps even "theatrical romantic". I'll have to look at more examples of each in order to be able to give more accurate answers. I already knew that flowy fabrics, ruching, tulip hemlines, peplum tops, wrap dresses, strategic ruffles, waist-defining outfits, and corseted pieces flatter me, so the results seemed to confirm my tastes. Thank you for the video, it was an interesting exercise.

Hi Audrey! I love this video and Kibbe method. I've been studying Kibbe's method for years and it has helped me so much with my own style and also determining others very quickly. This is also a reason I have to tell you this. I don't see you soft classic like you said in the video. Like you know, all classics have traits that are perfectly between feminine and masculine. Soft classics tend a little bit toward feminine and dramatic classic toward masculine but still all them are in the middle of the line segment. Any trait you view closely, you can't say is it feminine or masculine. Unlike naturals which have both feminine and masculine traits but mixed well (and gamine who also have feminine and masculine traits but not mixed, just combined).
Let's take a look at your face. Your eyes are strong and narrowing from the outside. This is masculine trait. Still they are quite soft looking and big which is feminine trait. They are very close each others which narrows all classics out immediately (classics are always in perfect symmetry and balance). Your nose is long and strong looking (->masculine), but rounded and soft (-> feminine). Your muscles are clearly seen in your jaw, cheeks and other face. This is masculine trait, yet your face is soft and rounded which is feminine thing. Your mouth is quite wide and strong looking (M) but still soft (F). And I haven't even got to your body! Shortly, your muscles are standing out quite clearly even through clothes, which again cannot be classics. I know some professional athlete classics and even them don't have muscles that are standing out through clothes. For example, I can distinguish clearly your calves and thighs through clothes (f.e compare to Grace Kelly who has not). With complete certainty I can say that you are not any of the classics. I think that you are soft natural. Also when I look your instagram photos I think that you look much, much better in natural clothes. Classic pieces look pretty dull and separate on you, but natural pieces brings you to life
    .
I really hope you understood what I meant, because I think this can be very useful to you. Sometimes it's hard to see yourself objectively :).
    Love your videos and personality,
    xo, Sindy

Nothing to do with this method, but I am glad I managed to remember!

I'm fairly certain I am a *soft classic* too. I've gotten classic in the quiz too, but my results are not all Cs - I have a lot of Ds and Es for facial features. It's tricky to judge youself when you are doing the quiz, but the height parameters help. Also, knowing that I wasn't an hourglass but having a slightly defined waist helped me determine my type. They say classics often get complimented for what they are wearing because if they are not careful, they are over powered by what they wear if it's too dramatic for them.

Hi Audrey. Yes, I have been trying to follow this system. I am a Theoretical Romantic. I also try to follow Dressing Your Truth. John Kitchener style essence types is very good also. David Zylar also has a good system. Just for fun I tried Dressing for your Zodiac Sign. Not sure how accurate it is but it is right for my friends and I. Lately, I did the Myers Briggs Personality System and this is very helpful as well.

I am a huge fan of the Kibbe system. Anyone who is confused about the system or wants to learn more should definitely check out the TH-cam channels of Aly Art and MerriamStyle. Both ladies have fantastic eyes and have explored these 13 body types in depth. I know Audrey linked to an online quiz, however I would highly highly recommend going to the Aly Art channel and doing the quiz with her, as she provides examples for reference.

Wow I've never heard of the Kibbe system before! I took the survey and I am a Theatrical Romantic. I guess that explains why I have always preferred my "classics" to have a twist like draping, embroidery, lace, etc. Even my striped t shirt has cursive writing embroidery on it. I'm so glad you introduced this method as it really helped me discover why I prefer certain details but could not put a finger on why.

The test put me in the Dramatic Classic category (roughly), but the descriptions for Soft Classic body type and style seem to fit me better as I don't have dramatic, angled features. Then when you said you are a SC I knew I must be right. Our facial structure is very similar, and I also prefer looser romantic styles over stiff structured pieces. Reading the descriptions and looking at photos really helped me figure it out, and further confirms my personal sense of style. Thanks for this!

Thanks Audrey - really helpful. I think I am a soft classic too - but will take the test again to be sure. I think my body and shape may have changed over the years - as I am sure I was a Natural when I was younger - but my face in particular was more angular - but not sure if this is correct - perhaps I was always more of a classic.

Patricia Horgan your true body type doesn’t develop till sometime in your twenties due to the fact that in youth we have extra angularity and flesh that goes away as we age.

Per the diagram scale at the beginning of the vid, does that mean you can borrow from the types immediately before and after? For example, a SN could borrow from a Natural and a Dramatic Classic? I've definitely borrowed from Natural successfully, but I've never thought to borrow from Dramatic Classic - I've always assumed Soft Classic was the one I could borrow from, but is that inaccurate?

I loved this video. So eye-opening since I wasn't aware of Kibbe and his categories. As you mentioned, the 5 usual body types just never seemed to suit me totally. I'm a Rectangle but don't have a small chest or narrow hips, so I'm not a "model" body style, which is how that's often described. Now Kibbe, and I've found something that resonates far more: Dramatic Classic, although I, too struggled with the test a bit, particularly part 1, so it took 3 tries to really get it right. Thanks, Audrey!!

  • @milaalaniva775

Funny how everyone is excited about Kibbe again. He wrote the original book in 1987. He still sees clients in New York and he has a Facebook account and group. He has changed his system quite a lot from the book. I would recommend for everyone to check him out and see how he actually sees things.

I think I am a Dramatic Classic - balanced yet with some angularity, specifically my jawline and hipline are a little bit squaer-ish. I'm 5.6 size 8-10, my arms and legs are long, and my vertical line is long, I guess due to Dramatic undercurrent. When I gain weight it's the hips/tighs area, which again directs to DC. I also have short waist which seem to be DC element, too. Am I right in the way I understand this? For my husband thinks I am FN. He did the test for me as well. My natural hair is FN - beachy loose waves, and even though I feel myself most when wearing DC lines, I find myself drawn to many FN outfits. When I'm wearing heels I feel that the flowy unstructured lines can work for me. Am I on the right track here, do you think?

So. Where do we find the descriptions of each type? I’m classified as a “classic” according to the link. But, I have been told (even by random strangers in elevators) that I look like Julia Roberts (I can see that; but I feel like I look more like Princess Di) both of which are flamboyant naturals. I’m not paying $200 for a book!!

  • @jillianjacques4190
    @jillianjacques4190 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I find a lot of people get kind of cultish with this. I'm a classic, but I'm 5'10" tall. I'd describe myself as if Marilyn had a smaller bust and went to the gym every day. Still had her small waist and full hips had the natural curve in her chest and rib cage but not a dramatic bust line. A lot of people would argue with me though because of my height. I don't think my height affects my proportions at all because I'm just truly balanced and proportioned, so the claim that all tall people look lanky and awkwardly long doesn't ring true with me, enough so that I don't look that tall at all when on my own until you directly compare me to someone who' average height. I just feel like the taller you get in this system the fewer options there are for you. So as soon as you're taller than 5'7" you can't really celebrate your differences and individuality without getting SOMEONE telling you you're too tall because for some reason having certain proportions is gatekept to specific ranges of height. I find as soon as you use height as criteria to qualify for a certain title you end up with certain areas of the spectrum for balance and symmetry attributing their balance in part to their height and becomes identity-defining so to speak. It may be true most balanced body types are going to be mid-height, but they're not balanced BECAUSE they're average height. It's just because there are more people of average height in general, not because they're inherently more balanced. Less than 10% of the female population is over 5'8" and you only see like .07% of the people exotic-looking enough to be in the mainstream media. So yeah, I don't see anything here that justifies height exclusivity. If it's so important to be of moderate height then there should just be other options, because super tall, lean, athletic, and angular isn't me either but that's the only category that won't have anyone butt hurt that I'm tall.

Sorry if I sound really dumb but I took the quiz in the video and I got an 85 (added the three test scores together). The table that tells your body type just skips over 76-88 and the midway point isn't particularly easy to see either. ? So what am I?

  • @iseydelmar

Test results gravitate between Soft Natural and Flamboyant Gamine... I am not really convinced, ehm, starting from my VERY NOTICEABLE 5ft 11! From the descriptions and the examples, I would say somewhere between Flamboyant Natural and Soft Dramatic...

David Kibbe's Metamorphosis was pubblished in 1987 and since then it has been a study book for stylists and professionals of fashion. It's an authentic theory, and must be necessarily applied by experts with serious working background. A web site with multiple choice test is surely of interest, BUT GIRLS, IF YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR BODY TIPE DETERMINED IN A SERIOUS WAY, CONTACT A TRUE EXPERT. Only an expert eye could catch those little detailes that classify you like "soft classic" rather than "classic" ecc. You tube and the web can inform, but the professional eye is still the best, when it comes to style.

  • @lindenpeters2601

This quiz is ehh, okay, but not spot on. It attempts to assign hard numbers to each type and put them on a straight spectrum, when there is actually more overlap than that. I recommend finding Aly Art's video on the body type quiz. I just wrote down the questions and answer choices as I watched, and took it on my own. It is much more accurate, and you won't get marked wrong for having unique features.
If you feel your face doesn't match the rest of you (like me, my face is much softer than the rest of me), Merriam Style has a video on that.
