They completed it with erratic rules changes and endorsements for losers running for political office and idiotic little clubs who make propaganda films for useless causes. Honestly saw more crashes outside Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC than in any race-- fan stupidity seems to have reached a shameful zenith of some sort. This is the race that got my grandparents into nascar. My family has been watching nascar since then. This race is legendary because of the fight, first fully televised race, it sparked a fued between the Allison's and old hickory, and the return of the king. Both the Allison's and cale are legends and if it wasn't for their fight nascar might not be as big as it is today.

  • @kingawsume
    @kingawsume 3 ปีที่แล้ว +684

    Richard Petty is considered "The King" because *no one* will or even *can* break the number of wins he has; the series just doesn't have enough races. There are only 41 starts in the whole of 2021; 3 pre-season races that don't give you points, 8 "play-off" races that you could win and still not be in the running for the championship, which only leaves 30 regular season races. You'd have to win every single race for 5 years straight, never have any mechanical issues, not get caught up in something that you couldn't control, and even then, you'd only have a 4 race buffer to still take home the record.

      Lets not forget however that for I dunno…. Decades maybe…. He had far better equipment that everyone else. He had quite a lot of talent, no doubt, but he had corporate backing from Dodge and STP. In fact the Dodge Superbird was pretty much made so Petty would have a better “stock car” than everyone else.
      He had to take up Drag Racing one year even since they wouldn’t let him run what he was going to bring to the track…

    Other content creators have already touched based on this race, so here’s some extra pointers and fun facts for the uninitiated.
    •Dale Earnherdt Sr. (who was a Rookie at the race) took the leading lap for a moment, hinting at his greater success in the future.
    •There had been multiple lead changes throughout the race, as opposed to a mostly lead-stagnant race known as the “Chu-Chu Train”
    •The race was almost canceled because of the rain.
    •When Donnie and Cale hit into each other, neither let-off the throttle, causing them to bounce back and fourth until they hit the wall.
    •Cale was looking to win his fourth.
    •Practically everyone was driving an Oldsmobile, a now defunct car company, because of how fast it was compared to other brands.
    •Bobby Allison would father Davey Allison, who was his own accomplished driver and unfortunately died in 1993.
    •Cale Yarborough is sixth of the all-time NASCAR winner’s list, tied with Jimmie Johnson, with 83 wins. The two who achieved 84 wins are Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison.
    •Richard Petty’s 200th win had then-president Ronald Reagan land the plane to congratulate him at victory lane (although people argue that it should’ve been at most his 199th win).

    • @ill_Hex
      @ill_Hex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Even though NASCAR had given major punishments to drivers for unintentionally having theirs an inch or so bigger, Petty got off pretty light, with points docking and a fine.
      People argue that, since he won the race with a modded car, it should’ve been ruled out. Yet he still kept the win, possibly to artificially keep him likely to win 200 races, which he did.

    I’ve never been a race fan but I had a childhood friend whose father was really into it. I got the impression it was more of a zen thing to zone out to rather than something you’d get really worked up about. There was something endearing about seeing him asleep in his recliner on Sunday afternoons, a pile of empty beer cans next to him and the steady drone of race cars coming from the TV. Not exactly Father of the Year, but he worked extremely long hours 6 days a week so he earned it. RIP Bill. 🏎 🏎

      @@anhondacivic6541 There's a lot of strategy about when and how to pit the cars to spend the least amount of time off the track without running out of fuel before the race is over, and it's hard enough that sometimes top-level teams get it wrong and straight up run out of gas on the last lap. It's also far harder than you'd think to drive fast around an oval, and a single pass can take multiple laps. Top drivers from other series rarely if ever do well, examples being Dario Franchitti, Kimi Raikkonen and Danica Patrick all being mediocre at best.

    • @joshcorvette
      @joshcorvette 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@anhondacivic6541 On the surface, to a casual viewer, on ovals, it just looks like left turns. In actuality they're wheeling the cars at the limit, usually, 150-190mph with 120-160 degree cockpits, at the limit of tire grip trying to gain just a slight advantage on the other cars. Taking a different racing line, using different pit strategies, drafting, or just plain using their bumper to move the guy in front out of the way. Compared to other motorsports, there's a lot more tolerance for aggression between drivers, and physical contact between cars is common and something fans love to see. It's definitely something to experience in person at least once.

    • @shreknskrubgaming7248
      @shreknskrubgaming7248 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@anhondacivic6541 it isn't really something that can be explained if you're not a fan of it. Sure, we could talk for hours on what makes it entertaining but at the end of the day, you either like it or you don't. I could ask other people what makes boxing entertaining, or hockey, or soccer, or tennis, any of the sports I don't like, and their answers wouldn't really mean much to me. You have to understand the intricacies of what makes NASCAR, NASCAR. It's like the game Skyrim. I've heard countless people scream at me about this or that and why it's the best game ever released in the history of video games, but I still can't stand playing it. I've tried. I almost fell asleep.

    When I was a kid I lived in Florida and there would be NASCAR races on most every Saturday. I think I watched them occasionally but I definitely know about this race. They used to show a small clip from the fight in one of their highlights packages. All of the guys involved in this went on to be Hall of famers and long time team owners. You're correct about NASCAR being in a bit of decline. It exploded in the '90s and for a brief while was nearly the number one sport in America possibly still trailing football but still gigantic. A lot of the early Superstars and even the next generation superstars from this. Have retired and for some reason some of their fans seem to have let go of NASCAR rather than picking a new favorite.

    I just can't deal with watching them go in circles for hours. Maybe it's just my ADHD. However, I will never turn down the chance to go watch a race in person. When those cars thunder past, your heart races and you can't help but smile. In the late 80s, a family friend was about to move up to Nascar but he was almost killed in an accident that ended his career. It wasn't really an accident. Two brothers who raced in the same circuit as he did tried their best to keep him from winning. Two races prior to his "accident" he got one of the brothers disqualified for cheating and stripped of his win. The brothers got their revenge when they caused the "accident." This kind of behavior is why I don't like racing. It should be every man for himself, no teams, and, no politics. Just race and let the best man win.

    • @ypvsypvs

      It's not as bad as you think. It's ovals, not circles. Which if you think about it is a huuuuge difference. Instead of a start followed by one long turn until the finish you have like 450 turns and 450 straights. Sure, the same 2 turns and same 2 straights which are basically copies of eachother and really one turn and one straight... but it ain't no circle! And, after 17 beers and a brawl with your cousin wife Betty Sue - a fun day watching tv from a sofa chair dragged out on the lawn.
