Right at the end he mumbles Arigatou gozaimasu which means thankyou in japanese so i feel like he did learn a handful of phrases to add authenticity/get the dialect right at least.
Alex Smith yes nut in japan arigatou (ありがとうございます）you just need to say arigato. nothing like the gozaimasu. you can say gozaimasu but it is very rare people say it. i think it is very polite to do so.

The art of comedy is making people laugh. The audience laughed so how exactly is that a piss poor attempt? If no one laughed he would have failed but they laughed therefore he succeeded.
