Thank you SO much!! This helped me fix our Music Christmas Snow Globe that my husband has had since he was a child. Appreciate your patience and making this video.
Thanks for the vid. Our family had a music box that has sat for over 20 years with a similar issue. I was able to put it back together with the help of your video. However, I placed the governor (regulator as you refer to it) in first before I closed the black plastic lid. Thank-you again.

Thanks for watching, and thank's for the positive commentary. I normally get loosers who bash my videos.
You gave the courage to tear the bottom off another Disney snow globe to fix the music box.. just needed a little shot of WD-40 in the right place. Thanks!
Thanks for posting all these shots and explanations of your refurbishing process! I had a similar snow globe and mechanism, and even though the problem was very different your explanations really helped me diagnose and fix the problem!
6 1/2 minutes in and my jaw dropped because I’m trying to fix a Disney Winnie-the-Pooh music box and when I opened it, the movement looked exactly like that! Guess they put the same crappy quality movements in everything.
ty for the lesson, quite a help. I watch jewelers fix wind up watch and clock movements as well. It can be really interesting, I have been told to have eye protection when I'm working around the tightly wound spring just in case it does jump out.
Thank you so much! Mine also had the glue holding it in place. I found that the comb had been moved a hair width away from the teeth. Loosening the screws allowed me to adjust them down and to the side. Took some trial and error to adjust it just right, but it works!
This video is super informative and you seem like a good guy, Frank. But what in the world is going on with the extra background noises? Did you add some of those in? And the railroad-crossing-alert bell at the 5min mark? That marked the end for me.
I have the same music snow globe box. When I attempt to wind it, the key springs back immediately. The anchor is solid in place. Any guidance is appreciated, as I enjoy the repair process. Thank you and all the best from New Rochelle N.Y.
Thank you so much!!! This is a great and helpful video. I do have one question. My oscillator isn't spinning sometimes. Does it have anything to do with dust or anything like that? The plastic piece is touching the metal so I'm really not sure what's going on. Thank you!!!
Make sure that nothing is obstructing the oscillator and that it's registered correctly into the housing. Any big issues with these units usually involves the spring, so you'll want to make sure that the spring is spinning on it's hub and is unobstructed. You'll also want to check for dirt or debris. If all else fails, you can saturate the unit with kerosene and that will unclog any dirt deposits. The nice part about kerosene is that it evaporates and doesn't leave any deposits or gum behind.
Hope do notice me, on my case the only problem is not the music box but body mechanism of the housing is not moving because even it sounds long however the body free designed to move also as clockwise movement before.
Great vid. Now to find a video addressing my particular issue, measuring, sourcing, & installing the clockspring. I've been searching Google & so far no luck. I can't believe how difficult it is to source a spring that's 6mm wide x .3mm thick. Still need to measure the length. 🤦♂️ ugh. Wish me luck!
I have a Snowbabies Stories music box that has been over wound. I believe I can get it to run again, by following some videos of how to do it but my problem is this. The music box has been glued in in the corners underneath. How can I loosen that glue to get the box mechanism out? Thank you so very much.
Trying to fix my daughters music box. I have the whole thing taken apart and have put the coil back in it using the wind up. I wish I payed closer attention when taking part cause I’m not sure how to put it back together!!!
Hi, my spring anchor is attached however it is still clicking and cannot wind up. I think the spring inside has detached itself from the gear. How do I resolve this or remove the black plastic cover because it seems that the black plastic cover cannot be unscrewed off.
I believe that cover is blind riveted in. If it is, you'll need to drill through the rivet, but beware that the spring will unload rapidly and you'll need to tighten it up to put the whole thing back together.
i have a old car copper music box that has the same exact issue and parts and everything but we cant get the actual doodad out of the housing the winder doesnt seem to come out and it has the rest of it stuck in the car any ideas ?
Hi there! I have same kind of music box that needs repair. Unfortunately I just can't figure out how to remove both lever (it just won't come out) and plastic cover. Can you help me?
Hi! What tool would I need to take the black part off? I’m looking for a circle helix looking tool but I can never find it. Been through three tool boxes. Please help!
If you look at the part carefully, I believe it is fastened in with a bolt that has a hex slot in it. So apparently, you would use a hex wrench or hex driver to remove it. Keep in mind that the spring is not going to come out peacefully if it is under load. As a matter of fact, if the mechanism is wound, the spring will want to shoot out of the assembly, so you'll want to remove other pieces to protect them from the force of that spring when it comes loose of it's housing.
I'm trying to fix my childhood music box. This is where the problem is but I can't seem to keep it together. After I get everything in place and I start to test it the black cog piece falls out of place. I can't seem to get it to stay in place
I have a Reed and Barton rotating musical Christmas tree that has been overwound. How do I get the bottom off to repair or replace the music box part? Thanks!
Watching your video. Very interesting but not helpful for me. My music box mechanism has been overwound and doesn't move at all. I don't know if it's fixable or if the mechanism has to be replaced. Would love to fix it for my granddaughter. Any suggestions? Thanks.
The spring is likely anchored into the mechanism housing. You'll likely need to relocate it into it's hole to anchor it. If this still doesn't do the trick, you can replace the mechanism. The Music Box Company sells mechanisms with thousands of songs: www.themusicboxcompany.com/tune_lists.htm
man.. i wish i knew what i was doing before i decided to take the whole thing apart.. i've got the same exact model, except mine has a little on off switch in that hole next to the keys mount that stops the oscillator. 2 hours went into putting the spring back into the top plastic housing, and now i'm trying to get the stopper (under the spring) to mesh back with the music wheel while also fitting the top part that came off on yours back in. oh boy i'm not looking forward to this... edit: taking a look at the re-assembly part of the video, the stopper switch would go in the second large hole, so that baseplate is definitely shared with other music boxes that do have stopper switches, and for whatever reason, that one does not.
Question tho I highly doubt you will see it. How did you just twist the winding key off????? I'm trying to take part my crappy kid music box from when I was little to put it in a different box but I cant get the lever off.
There's a possibility that you may have a different key on your box. Look for a tiny hex nut that may be used to tighten the key onto the winding stem.
It sound like the works is jammed. Not uncommon. You might take it to a jeweler or a local clock shop to have it fixed. You can also get these musical movements at the music box shop.
I have a similar issue with the wind up thing. Whenever I turn it I hear it cranking but when i turn it the opposite direction it easily comes loose. I decided to take out the parts like you did to see what the problem could be. When I opened it I didnt notice anything wrong. No parts were sticking out or came apart. I’m not sure what to do to fix this.
The problem is often the anchor for the spring. If the spring isn't anchored in place, you'll never get the box to store the energy needed to drive the mechanism.
The spring is attached in two places. The inner part of the spring attaches to the winding mechanism which, in turn, has a gear attached that locks with each "click." The outer part of the spring is anchored to the drum.
I broke mine by accident, it started out like that, but I took it all apart to see if I could fix it. The metal thing that is inside the black plastic came out and I can't seem to put it back in. I'm so lost and saddened, is there any way that I can fix it?
It is possible to put that regulator back into place with some patience. If you absolutely can't manage that, you can purchase a new movement to replace it from Music Box Attic - www.musicboxattic.com/music-movements-modules/
Mine works the music but doesn't light up as it should there is space for cell batteries but no mention what size or how many ,I payed £40 for this item at this price should have thought it would have been all correct
Unless you're a machinist, you wont be able to repair movements with broken parts. If that's the case, you can replace your music box with a new one from companies like musicboxattic.com.
Mine had the same problem, but when I put the regulator in the gears stop turning? It works fine without it, albeit a little fast, but it just stops once that piece is attached. Any ideas?
These mechanisms are best lubricated with graphite, however your issue might go well beyond just lubrication. You might take a closer look at the gear teeth themselves. There's likely an obstruction within the gear teeth and you can clean them with kerosene.
If the gears in your music box are unwinding too fast, then it's likely the regulator. That's the piece that creates the air flow when the mechanism is in action. I make reference to that part at the 28 minute mark.
If the gear is damaged, you won't be able to replace it. The good news is that you can replace the movement in it's entirety. Just go to www.musicboxattic.com/music-movements-modules/
@@frankhamilton8257 sad thing is that it has a mechanism that moves within the snowglobe. i cant just replace the box since it wont have that mechanism.

You don't really want to open the spring chamber because you might not be able to put the spring back in. The anchor is the key. Just find the end of the spring and set the anchor like I did in this video.
I wish I could, but I know you can do it. Also, keep in mind, that if the movement is too far gone, you can always buy a new musical movement to replace the original from musicboxattic.com
There's usually a mild adhesive, but it's not superglue. You might apply a little heat from a heat gun to soften the adhesive. Not too much heat, though.
I have adult ADD so I could not get through the 32 minutes of how to fix my snow globe. I wish you would make a short version for people like me who can follow for about 3 minutes. But for the rest of the people you video seem thorough, just too much for me.
My music box thing stopped self unwinding and I’m freaking out bc I don’t know what to do it’s a locket with a music box inside!!.. I feel like my moms going to kill me..😰
Can anyone like me to a video on fixing a rusty music box mechanism? Water from my snow globe turned the mechanism a little white and now it won’t rotate.
You may be able to de rust that mechanism by soaking it in Kerosene, but don't quote me on that. If it's a total loss, there are companies that sell these items. Once such company is called Music Box Attic, but shop around because there are dozens of companies out there.

You don't really want to open the spring chamber because you might not be able to put the spring back in. The anchor is the key. Just find the end of the spring and set the anchor like I did in this video.
thank you this video is really good for mine music box :-)
Thanks for helping mine
Trate de repararlo pero la cosita con dos orejas está rota 😭
hi I m from India.
whom should I take it to to fix it. a clock shop? or someone else?
shikhar saxena a clock shop might be a good place to take it, but you might also take it to a jewelry shop.
So how did your daughter like it?
Maybe you could fix my Scooby-Doo snowglobe.
I wish I could, but I know you can do it. Also, keep in mind, that if the movement is too far gone, you can always buy a new musical movement to replace the original from musicboxattic.com
I can’t even get the bottom off, how do you do that? It’s superglued on I think
There's usually a mild adhesive, but it's not superglue. You might apply a little heat from a heat gun to soften the adhesive. Not too much heat, though.
Most glues can be softened/removed with alcohol.
@@frankhamilton8257 The bottom melted off and all the water came out. I guess I applied too much heat. Whoops
@@Lolo-mx4sc Ah, thanks. I tried a heat gun and all the water spilled out because the bottom melted and caved in
I have adult ADD so I could not get through the 32 minutes of how to fix my snow globe. I wish you would make a short version for people like me who can follow for about 3 minutes. But for the rest of the people you video seem thorough, just too much for me.

I have adhd too. Just watch it on 2x speed.

Like the other comments ima ask my dad to fix it fingers crossed
Thank you very much i fix it
I have a Moana globe. I have taken off the base and can't get to the part to add water... Anybody? Help!
