  • Introduced at a party in Manhattan last fall, NYU tech and tourism professor Richie Karaburun and I immediately hit it off. Given our many mutual interests - Tulsa, New York City, economics, history, and how America and the world have evolved the way they have, to name a few - we have a lot to talk about. Seeing Tulsa as an undiscovered gem, he oversaw a study about Tulsa as a destination. I found it fascinating to read an outsider's take on my hometown - and it has inspired a good deal of thought from Tulsa's leaders about where to take our beloved city.
Anyway, Richie organized a Shark Tank-style "pitch day" competition in downtown Tulsa in early May among a dozen entrepreneurs competing for a $20,000 prize. It was way cool to observe. Some of the city's most prominent organizers were involved, and their insights shared were informative and instructive.
With a day and a half to explore Tulsa and the area together, after some back and forth, we settled on driving up to Pawhuska, having lunch at "Pioneer Woman" Rhee Drummond's "Merc" (or Mercantile) in downtown Pawhuska. We walked around and smiled to ourselves how the charming town looked like a movie set. Well, it was just a couple years ago; many of the scenes from "Killers of the Flower Moon" were filmed there.
Wanting to go out a little bit further and explore the Tall Grass Prairie and maybe see some bison (we did!), we hopped in the M5 and drove that way. Not too far into our drive, we realized that the M5 was not the right vehicle to be using while driving these unpaved roads. For sure, we would've done just fine with a 4x4. Yet I brought my drone, and was able to fly it and have a look around to capture the incredible beauty of the prairie in Osage County from above. Just outside of town, we were able to take in the spectacular Bluestem Falls, too, which you'll see in this video. Enjoy!

That's one mightily refreshing stream from where I'm sitting. I am now thirsty as hell! Some wonderfully unspoilt country as far as the drone can see!

Glad you enjoyed it….and that you’ve followed me over here. The M5 will eat tarmac for days! Gravel roads… not so much. The drone comes in handy there. ;)
